If this thread is any indication, very roughly half are in the instant sale camp, and half in the overpriced camp. It doesn't take very many $1400 for a $350 SSD upgrade and $1400 for a $350 RAM upgrade to more than make up for all the lost sales, so I can see where Apple is coming from.

Apple should (but won't) offer a base model "Tinkerer's Edition" Mac mini for $399, with empty upgradable: CPU socket, SODIMM memory slots & empty NVMe M.2 SSD slot.
Plus a three item bundle: user's choice of CPU, SSD & memory sold separately, at "similar to Newegg" prices.
In other words: similar to a "bare bones" Intel NUC, but also macOS compatible.
And maybe: include a mini tool kit for accessing the internals, plus a "free" space grey keyboard & mouse.

When has Apple ever done this in the modern era? Even under Steve's control Apple never did this. What they did however was actually compete in regards to price compared to other computer companies, which is why even today the Mac Pro Tower is so reviled: it really was a Pro machine worthy of that title; not the trash can that came out in 2013.

The CPUs in the new Mac mini
Core i3-8100 - 4c/8t
Core i5-8500B - 6c/6t
Core i7-8700B - 6c/12t

Geekbench numbers are not to be found on i5 and i7, so will be interesting to see.

8th Gen upped cores on i3 to 4 and i5 and i7 to 6 w/ and w/o HT. All have turbo boost except the i3. Basically, it’s the Wild West now.
Ahh, thanks for clearing that up. That makes sense. At least in the Desktop realm lol. I'm sure the mobile is a whole other cluster*$K

Please, your upgrade prices are wrong.

Apple buys in such quantities there is no way it's actually paying $350 for the upgrade.

Is this gonna be any good for video editing? (I mostly use After Effects and Final Cut Pro)

Can't really afford a new iMac, and I already have 2 nice 4K monitors, so.. But I like the idea of a small footprint system

Reviled or revered?

It's already been confirmed that it's not very user-upgradable and they tell you to use an Apple tech OR you will void your warranty if anything goes wrong. I upgraded the RAM on my 2011 Mac mini and my Late 2015 27" 5K iMac without any issues, because they designed it so the RAM could be easily upgraded.... this isn't the case with this new Mac mini. And the SSD? Yeah, it's not user upgradable at all and the cheap b a s t a r d s only give you 128GB to start: that's a sick joke and an utter insult to their customers.

The RAM is clearly VERY user upgradable, at least compared to how damn difficult it was to upgrade storage on the 2014 Mini, which I also did.

If I could have just taken off the black cover and been able to upgrade the storage on the 2014 mini, it would have been a cake walk.

This is VERY user upgradable, but like all things, if you take it upon yourself, you also take the liability that comes with it.

I upgraded the turbo(to IS38) on my 2017 GTI, but that doesn't mean my warranty is void, it just means that if the turbo lets go and ruins the engine, I wont be getting a new engine. But if the infotainment system breaks or the suspension needs work, it will be replaced under warranty. Its similar with this mac.

I have two 2TB SSDs in my current 2012 mini. Does anyone happen to know what sort of performance hit I'd see if I turned both of these drives into externals? I would probably opt for the cheaper traditional usb, rather than thunderbolt.

There are two ssd speeds, slow and fast. We’ll need benchmarks but Apples pcie typically push over 2000, vs the 600 you may be getting now. So booting off those 2TB will be slower but not slower than you are getting now.

The smart play is to put those in these with your data

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N52Z26D/

And leave the boot and apps on the pcie.

The price in Europe is...:

Yes, in countries with mandatory warranties and sales tax, it’s better to compare against USA + AC

Wouldn't they have to demonstrate that the turbo was the cause of the failure if the engine goes?

Or who have a multiple monitor setup which they prefer. Or who don't like the glossy iMac screen. Or who want a headless machine running somewhere. Or who want to connect it to a TV. Or...

Yep. Lots of reasons. This is basically the headless Mac that folks have wanted for a decade. Plenty of power and a cheap option to use the Mac software.

Yeah, they would. But that would be quite easy if it really were the case. Theres no mistaking a blown turbo thats taken an engine with it.

I believe it falls under the magnuson moss warranty act.

It would be absurd, for example, if Apple were to deny a warranty repair for a bad Wi-Fi card simply because you had upgraded the RAM.

Like the specs. (Though the iGPU is a bit underwhelming.)

But that pricing stings like a beach.

Yeah especially SSD prices. Why is SSD so much more expensive compared to traditional HDD with the same capacity?
Because there are a handful of companies producing the chips. Even they have throttled back production because the prices dropped this year. There is actually a slight glut of SSD in the market. Add in the fact that HDD is decades old technology and an order of magnitude slower it's clear why there is a price discrepancy.

A real, living, flesh and blood work horse costs a lot less than a new pickup truck.

Does anyone know if these support 4k monitors? It says 60hz on the apple site for these mac minis i thought 4k was 120hz?

Can you? Because if you do the math, it would make far more sense to sell full computers at a slightly lower price point than to HOPE that people will splurge for about 5x more than the base price to max out a Mac mini ($799 vs over $4000). to say nothing of alienating half of the potential buyers into either building their own Hackintosh and giving Apple ZERO money OR saying F-You to Apple entirely and going in another direction. It's not like there aren't a myriad of other Unix based OS' available, to say nothing of Windows which even I'll admit has come a long way.

I've had Apple computers and other products (iPods, iPhones, etc...) since the I bought a Newton when I was in middle school but, I'm fed the f up. Insane prices for half a s s e d hardware, worse and worse MacOS with features removed for ZERO reason (I'm looking at you Cover Flow and HiDPI), and removal of 'Insanely Great' features like MagSafe: seriously which Fields Medal Winner genius thought it was a good idea to remove MagSafe??

Pixel density and hz are unrelated.

Why would you need "authorized technician" to do it? Anyone that can follow simple instructions could do it in a few mins.....

Dont buy into the "you need a professional" crap.
And you know this how?

4K is 4K..... be it at 24Hz, 30 Hz or 60 Hz.

60Hz is the default for most displays.

By looking at the picture provided, also having experience getting into a 2014 mini to replace the storage.

Grumble. I will likely buy one. Price is a touch high to just get whichever one and figure it out later. I will have to figure out stuff first. Storage, longevity, incept-dates .. oops last one was for my killer organic robots.

But how would that compare to a comparable Mac Pro? Or a decked out Lenovo CAD station running Win 10? I would think the Mac Pro would be close and the Lenovo would be far cheaper, but that is still Windows.

ROFLOL!

NO

You have to toss the two 4GB RAM in the trash.

Tim Cook goes up in you deep again and says "Merry Christmas!"

Ebay the removed sticks, somebody has to have a windows box with a couple of open slots begging to be used.
