Apple today announced it has committed up to 720 million yuan (nearly $100 million) towards accelerating the development of clean energy sources in China, as part of the company's goal of transitioning its supply chain to 100% renewable energy by 2030.

The investment will go towards the second phase of the China Clean Energy Fund, which aims to add approximately 550,000 megawatt-hours of wind and solar capacity to China's grid each year, according to Apple. The first phase added more than a gigawatt of new wind and solar projects across the country, the company said.

Apple's overall goal is to become completely carbon neutral across its entire business, manufacturing supply chain, and product life cycle by 2030. More details about this plan are available on Apple's environment page.

In related news, Apple CEO Tim Cook is currently visiting China, and he has been sharing some photos from his trip on his Weibo account. Cook is once again attending the annual China Development Forum in Beijing, and reports said he described Chinese artificial intelligence platform DeepSeek as "excellent" while there.

As part of this pro-China campaign, Apple also announced it is donating to help expand rural teacher training programs in China.

I'll probably regret engaging in this conversation, but I don't see why Apple making efforts to be more environmentally friendly is apparently so outrageous to some people, even if some aspects are perhaps superficial. Like even if you don't really care about future generations having an inhabitable Earth, how is Apple putting in some effort harming your life in any way? Okay, fine, no leather iPhone cases… boo hoo.

People love to whine about stuff they never cared about in the first place it’s so funny, this is cool and if anything I’m surprised they didn’t go bigger than 100 million. What were the last quarters net profits 🤣

Even more, even if posters here think that's nothing wrong with climate, what's the issue with using solar and wind power?
Oil has been around for nearly 200 years. More than enough time to make money buying and selling oil stocks (if the hate against sun and wind are financially motivated)

My borderline OCD asks why does that green 'earth' show the Americas, not China/Asia?

The same people outraged now will probably be outraged tomorrow because nobody told them or did anything to prevent this. Except they were told about and they didn't give a ****.

They just went so over the top with the Mother Earth thing it's hard to take them seriously, is all. Their attitude has gone from superficial to artificial. One of the reasons people are so upset about the Apple Intelligence thing is that it demonstrates that inside Apple, one hand doesn't know what the other is doing. Who knows if they are actually telling the whole truth anymore.

They were very confident with that Mother Earth bit, so yeah they better be making big moves to back it up.

So yeah environmentalism is great, it's just that people that pay enough attention to Apple to post on a forum like this have become a little skeptical of their motives and true world views lately.

To be clear I’m not aligning myself with those complaining about Apple trying to be better for the environment. They just need a new marketing department.

Do they have a similar agenda for the US? Or did they have one but cancel it after Trump got elected?

While it was unfortunate that they made a donation to his inauguration, I still believe that Apple holds strong to its principles. Being net-zero is not about not creating pollution, but about doing an equal or greater effort to reverse and reduce pollution. Over time, that will help to reverse the damage we humans have done. The evidence is crystal clear. Only the profit seekers are keeping us from achieving that goal.

I like to look at it this way... if fossil fuels were never invented and the world was already powered by green energy, would we not be better off? We absolutely would! It's a worthy goal... learn from and fix our mistakes.

Wow. Quite an angry Monday morning bunch of folks. Can't we be happy that a few companies are actually doing a bit to possibly help the environment for future generations?

Look at the positive. It's not your money they are giving away, and what's the worst that can happen - improvement to rural education and energy technologies?
