I don't want to hijack this thread to talk about iMacs... but... why does everyone say iMac updates are months off?

My guess is that Apple wanted to announce something this week to counteract the publicity that Bill Gates is getting at teh CES. And what better thing to bring forward than todays announcment of the "faster ever Macs".

Steve can then re-announce this next week and give more details of what it all means, and he may also mention that iMacs and MacBook Pros will also be updated with Penryn.

The MacRumors Buyer's Guide is advising "buy only if you need it - approaching the end of a cycle" for iMacs so talk of updates being months away seems strange to me.

1) I don't think a speed bumped Mac Pro is going to take an attention away from CES. Today's MP just brings it up to current standards. Basically, except for fanboys it's a yawn.

2) Don't get your hopes up for a new iMac @ MW. It's not going to happen, especially after today's MP bump. The MP release now is Apple's message that they are not going to waste Keynote time going over speed bumped products. The Keynote will be for all-new product(s). Like most others here, don't expect a new iMac until Late Feb to Early April.

The price increase...

...is not Apple's fault but a reflection of what has happened to the US dollar. The Fed has been so busy printing up new dollars that the value has dropped below that of the Canadian Looney.

If you allow politicians to print up money whenever they need some, they will. Inflation is a tax and here you are seeing it in action. :(

Seems logical... Announce this now to go along with the launch of the Penyrn Chip at CES.... next week, they will announce BluRay support at MW and then this will have BluRay.... I'm sure they announced this now to help Intel show of the Penyrn chip at CES as a favor to them... also, it leaves more time at MW for more announcements that more people will care about like the iPhone update, the ultra portable, BlueRay, movies rentals, etc... etc... My goodness... it does not get any better than this!

But how many people are going to buy today, tomorrow, etc. before Mac World?

And if they do release the option of Blu-Ray at Macworld, how many are going to be severely p*ssed off when the Mac Pros that they bought today could have had a Blu-Ray drive in it but doesn't?

A lot.

Does the new Mac Pro set up now limit the other lines? Mac Pro being the fastest etc? (or at least now, i know it's been too long since a general update and speed bump)

It clearly says one on the Tech Specs page!

PCI-Express.png

There are two. The key sentance in that lil box is 3 open slots. Can't have 4 open slots, kinda need a GPU.

they are updating the store at the moment, guess what?
Maybe they realized the $2,799 price tag was a typo and it should've been $2,499. Hey, I can dream.

All in all, the specs are just fine in my opinion, though I would've liked HDMI and eSATA. Not a big deal on those, though.

Woo, now I'm gonna get one of these shmancy new Mac Pro machines...but now I need a name for it. Octoman? I don't know. Help me out!

Why should they change the appearance? For the sake of changing it?

Maybe they did this now, so they have more time for other products at MacWorld ;)?

More time, and so each product can have its share of glory (rather than all clouded by the new laptop).

I'm curious as to how the SAS drives work in the SATA bays. I know the connectors are similar but how does the logic board switch between SAS and SATA. I always thought SAS needed to be added with a PCI-E card.

10.4 Server Support?

At the bottom of the specs page
http://www.apple.com/macpro/specs.html

You can add 10.4 Server 10-client and unlimited,
It doesn't link to the store but it seems weird for a typo.
(Also in the Google cache for the previous machine.)

If it can run 10.4 Server, it would obviously run Tiger.
Could there really be legacy support for those not ready or able (3rd party apps) to use Leopard?

I kinda doubt it, but I'm hoping...

First time post but I think I caught a leak-
On this page:
http://www.apple.com/macpro/technology/graphics.html
The displays at the top have silver apples but the displays on the bottom have black apples. Boo ya.

Coming from a photographer, that is just reflection and the use of light.

No new display.

But if you do want to use this a sign, that means no new displays at Macworld because (in my opinion) why bother paying the photographer/graphic designer/web designer to put all these up and make them ready if you're going to have new displays next week?

seriously what are the benifits of a better graphics card? Especially coming from a proffesional p.o.v.

I don't understand why people are so bummed that it doesn't have x or y feature.

It's a desktop. You want blueray, stop being so lazy and just put one in. The mac pro makes it retardedly easy to do such things. Same goes for graphics cards if the 2600 is not your cup of tea.

They have the most powerful processors available, just like before. There was nothing to update until now and they updated it...so blame intel for the wait.

As for the keyboard...I don't see how this is a big deal at all.

Only thing is it might be a bad omen of things to come regarding the new mbp.
