if all this is happening in 6 months why release the apps as they were at that time?

Because releasing them as they were at the time has allowed many people to get to enjoy great new features such as the excellent cross platform integration (iOS / web / Mac) without in any way hurting those who don't like them and can easily keep using the older versions. It also means that six months from now Apple will have had the benefit of bug reports and user feedback, making the apps much better than they would have been had they stayed in the lab that whole time. People are so uptight around here. Relax.

Also - I'm curious, has anyone tried these apps on all 4 platforms that they're available? (iPad, iPhone/iPod Touch, Web, and OS X?) Do they have feature parity or are some missing?

I am really curious to know the answer to this question too. Are all versions across iOS, browser and OS X now truly fully compatible with one another?

i swear if apple doesn't fix this crap where i have to manually capitalize every sentence and "I", i will move to Microsoft office. Nothing could possibly piss me off more than this, apple.

There's one on your keyboard: cmd + p

Yeah, I know what you're saying, but you are apologizing for a crude product. When I am shipping product and just want to print the next label a button is better than pulling out my keyboard and pressing two keys. You'll find print buttons on all major word processor suites as well as apps like Safari. I don't think the removal of the print button on my word processor is an improvement in functionality. I see where you are coming from but I didn't add the button until my need to print labels came about. I'm now using MS word. Not something that i'd have chosen normally. I was happy with Pages as me needs are basic but without the print button they've forced me to go to an app that is more convent.

Wait, the new Pages had WORD COUNT removed? Seriously?

Actually the new apps didn't REMOVE a single thing. Apple completely rebuilt iWork from the ground up on a totally new codebase. Apparently they didn't have time to add all of the new features and obviously they wouldn't have put all that effort into rebuilding them if they weren't planning on making major improvements over the coming months and years.

The old iWorks sat stagnant for years likely because of its old codebase that never was compatible with their newer projects on the web and iOS devices. In particular compatibility with the web version is important for iWork users to be able to have cross sharing/compatibility of iWork documents with the 80%+ of people who don't own a Mac.

There is a difference between not including something in the first rebuild so they can ship vs. removing the feature. This is a case of not adding something to a brand new build cause they ran out of time, not a case of removing a feature from old code.

On a side note, I feel sorry for anyone who is creating presentations to fill a word count quota vs. actually presenting information cause it will be used.

I don't think Steve would have let something like this version of iWork out the door.

I wish people would stop with "Steve Jobs would have..." or "Steve Jobs would have never...". No one knows what Steve Jobs would have done. And by the way, Steve Jobs approved FCP X to be released which was missing a lot of features in FCP 7.

Most of the list of features that will be re-added are so vital that I wonder why Apple bothered releasing what seems to me is a half-assed suite. Apple waited 4 years... surely they could have deferred another 6 months and actually released an upgrade rather than a downgrade.

I wonder how much they rely on a shared code base and if they use a single build process for all the platforms. If so, I wonder if Apple might at some point let developers easily make applications that target all 4 platforms?

Everything I have read leads me to believe that Apple is increasingly leveraging a signle code base for all platforms. They are going slow to get it right vs the mess that MS did. So my guess is that developers are going to be able to create a universal app that works accross the entire ecosystem at some point.

Intentional or not, this way thousands of geeks are talking about iWork and iLife all over the internet, at least twice (once to grumble, once to be pleased they're going to fix stuff).

If they'd not released the new versions until they did all the stuff they plan to, there might well have a been a collective 'meh' and far less chatter about the apps at all. And you know what they say about publicity…

But yeah, good that they have acknowledged the problems and have signalled they are working on them. And we all have the old versions still, so it's all alright really.

I made that point from the very beginning - Apple's MAIN goal was to reach feature-parity; and for that to happen, a complete rewrite had to take place.

Happy now?

What parity? iCloud Numbers can't edit charts while obviously Mac and iOS version can. Didn't even get that right.

Unbelievable that they are not re-introducing linked text boxes in Pages. The application is completely useless to me now, and have had to revert back to Pages '09 until that feature is put back in...

Why did Apple just not wait for 6 months to bring these Apps forward with all the features? I would rather deal with a customer saying when is it going to happen, rather than angering my customers with a half baked solution.

Good to have the previous versions available though. I would be curious as to how many people will switch to MS Office.

I have been using the previous version and Office. The new version just does not work for me.

The age of the computer-illiterate elderly is over!

I think we're seeing a general trend of OSX and iOS merging together. Unfortunately OSX is merging into iOS, I wish it was the other way around. I feel like the philosophy of, "my clueless granny should be able to use this" is penetrating a little too deeply :p

The same mistake in the media

"On October 22, Apple began offering free copies of the updated iWork apps to all users who owned a previous version."

I wasted a lot of time that first day trying to figure out why I couldn't get the free copies. Turns out that this blanket statement is wrong. My previous versions were all '08, and as such did not qualify. Wish the authors had said as much, instead of sending me on a so-called wild goose chase, getting my hopes up for no reason.

Final Cut Pro X
iTunes 11
iOS7
Logic Pro X
iWorks
(not getting into other disastrous side line projects like 'Maps')

The saga continues. Wow, these guys really know how to destroy good working software.

Yup... trying so hard to "innovate" they actually regress in more areas than progress (imo).

I'm glad that they're reinstating some of the features, but releasing the new software and not telling us everything that was missing was a bad move.

Really? Because anybody with at least a double-digit IQ could have predicted that the missing features were going to be added in updates.

Also - I'm curious, has anyone tried these apps on all 4 platforms that they're available? (iPad, iPhone/iPod Touch, Web, and OS X?) Do they have feature parity or are some missing?

Yes, I have used them on all four and since I'm not a 'power user' they work great. Everything looks and feels the same. No more warnings telling me that by opening a file on my iPad I'll lose something that was done on the Mac.

One thing though is that the iCloud versions show everything and it all stays intact, but some of the features are unavailable for actual use, such as cutting and pasting a formula that is not in an adjacent cell.

Overall, I love it and I'm glad Apple did it this way. As the iPad and iPhone become more powerful features will continue to be added.
