Glad I wasn't the winner ... I didn't want to have to pay a huge tax for the right to download tons of payed apps/music that I never wanted.

Or do he get a gazillion 'small amount' cards so that he can resell them on ebay?

Just consider what people are probably paying on subscriptions alone each year:

iCloud 20 gig storage plan: 40$
Mac OS X: 30$
iTunes Match: 25$
Netflix: 96$
iRadio or the like: ~120$

That's only a couple off the top of my head and you are already looking at 300$ a year, not even counting other app, music, movies, and book purchases/rentals. That 10k goes fast.

Nah they just look at all the downloads on the same second and just randomly choose one. Exactly what app is the winning download means nothing. It's the whole 50 billion promo that apple wants.

Are you sure they would not pick the next app if the one was Google Maps? :)

Do you think Apple pick the exact 50 billionth app as the winner, or they look a few downloads either side for one that is worthy of publicizing?

Since Apple said publicly they would pick the next entry after the 49,999,999,999th entry (not necessarily a purchase since you could enter without a purchase), and since many people will have purchased apps for the chance of winning $10,000, doing so would constitute fraud. Do I think Apple commits fraud over something like this? That would be so incredibly stupid, I don't think so.

Will he be allowed to sell it in $100 chunks on eBay? Who the heck would EVER spend that much for fart apps?

_You_ would probably spend it on fart apps.

To me, Apple has lots of music, books, audiobooks that I would spend money on. A bit more than I spend annually anyway, for the next twenty years. Videos and video rentals. And a bit of software as well.

Yes they should have split it between more winners - make more people happy. Or like in the old days where they were giving out the latest and greatest laptops to the winner - that would something I really would like.

At the rate the apps are downloaded, and adding in server latencies around the world and rounding errors etc, I'm sure there are multiple 'winners' for a given second, or even a hundreth of a second. Perhaps a lottery from the 'simultaneous' downloaders (that's not publicized for obvious reasons).

At normal times about 1000 downloads per second. Probably a tiny bit more at the winning time.

I think that cash would have been a better prize than a credit at the app store so big that it can never be used.

Fart apps. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

I'd uses it to migrate my iTunes purchases from my Gmail Email to my iCloud Email. But I would still have A LOT left over. I wonder if it could be used for iRadio subscription as well. (if apple does announce a subscription based music service)

If the service is charged to your on file iTunes account, yes. iTunes Match uses my account, and I had like $23.47 last year on renewal so only $1.53 was billed to my Credit Card.

Pick 10 categories of apps.
Buy 10 $10 apps in each.
Repeat every year for 10 years.

$10,000 App Store card used up in a sensible manner in a sensible time.

Would have been funny if the 50 billionth app was a Google app... like Google Maps.

Salt in an open wound.

Since Apple has to choose it at random due to the simultaneous downloads, I think they'd make sure it's not a Google app ;)

Puhh, finally I can stop checking my eMail if Apple send me the winner mail

Congrats to the winner ... That's lots of music you can download

I've always wondered what would happen if that milestone download was one of the many fart apps. Would Apple announce it or pick another winner?

This keeps coming up but it's not true. You don't pay taxes on the gift card. The taxes are paid as you USE the gift card. Ever go into a store to buy a gift card? notice that there's no taxes on it? That's why. Your taxes are counted against the value of the card.

This is how you figure out who the 50 billionth winner is.

1) Sync all databases to one master iTunes every hour or so.
2) Query the table (Select * FROM iTunes WHERE ROWID='50000000000')
3) Email winner.

$10,000 in iTunes is an easy spend:

1) Final Cut Pro X
2) Logic Pro
3) Apple Remote Desktop
4) HD Movies
5) HD TV Shows
6) Music
7) Books
8) Games
9) Paid Apps

I could probably spend the 10k within 1-2 weeks easily and have a very nice movie/tv/music collection. I say 1-2 weeks because I'm sure TWC would love me abusing their network in a 24 hour period.

Sure goes fast. 33-years to be exact, based on your calculations.

Besides, if you truly believe that you would never be able to spend $10,000 in apps, songs, etc., then simply consider the prize as access to the store for life. Being able to browse iTunes or MAS and buy whatever you wanted whenever you wanted to and never worry about it.
