While I am not opposed to the court's ruling, I find the designation of a 'monopoly' confusing. The X-Box is also a monopoly, yes? The Playstation store? What about Ford? What about Wallmart not accepting Applepay? I think it's a very slim slice indeed to claim a monopoly within a single companies product. And if this is upheld I see no reason why a lot of other companies couldn't be forced into a similar ruling.

I don't believe they were ruled a monopoly. Rather prohibiting developers from providing links to their own website and/or even mentioning alternate means of making IAP was ruled anticompetitive. Those rules had to be relaxed somewhat. The way Apple complied with that ruling and then lied under oath about their process to comply basically led the judge giving the plantiffs the maximum possible on that issue. Oops.

Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. They won this and bungled it so badly. This will be studied in business classes

IMO this ruling is meaningless. All this fuss over nothing. No one is going to leave the walled garden which offers the utmost in security, ease of use and convenience to go to some 3rd party and keep adding in different subscriptions with all these passwords everywhere that you will soon forget you have and keep paying monthly fees. I don’t even want to talk about your financial info going everywhere too. Also with those commission savings do you think Epic is going to reduce prices for the consumer? No way! They are keeping all that profit so again why would the consumer ever leave? Plus let Epic get a taste of all the logistics and customer service expenses required. They’ll be running back to Apple. This ruling is a complete non event. Have a great day!

Yeah nobody subscribes to any apps that require you to do so outside the app store.

Netflix, Spotify, Amazon prime, nobody uses them...

No doubt that Apple was going to appeal. Will be interesting to see what happens in this case in the coming months. Apple will very much want to overturn the decision.

Still making my subscriptions without apples system in the future.
For now because I am a single developer working on other things right now will use Apple's in-app purchase system for subscriptions, but as soon as I get my own subscription system up and running, I'll only charge new customers with that.

Ok
if as you claim that people won’t leave the wall garden then why is Apple fighting
Tooth & nail to stop payment links in apps

Now is it entirely possible that market research has been done & found that if payment links are offered with zero commission then all these companies will do is under cut IAP to get customers in the door and by that time then customers will stop using IAP

While I wish Apple would just drop it and take the loss, this doesn't surprise me at all.

I suspect changes to the judge's order, (primarily around Apple's inability to charge a reasonable commission on link outs, which I have been convinced is actually unconstitutional), but most of the order will stand.

This is about app developers vs apple, not iPhone owners vs apple/app developers. You're free to start your own law suit, if you feel you are some how being wronged. You're free to stay in the walled garden.
Ya and….am I free to voice my opinion too? I mean unless I’m missing something this is where you go to discuss Apple right?

The judge should mess with them and make them return the original app store - Cydia and remove the Apple one that came later 🤣

I already do this by subscribing to all my apps directly with the app provider rather than go through the AppStore payment system.

Judge's ruling was particularly harsh re: language bout how Apple willfully violated ruling, and apparent felony purgery by Apple VP. Judges are usually pretty conservative. Well... appeal, appeal, etc. I just don't know anymore. Apple seems so, sO, SO invested in the current biz model that nothing will deter Tim & Co. (except Phil) from hoping App Store revenues continue apace. Good luck. Would be interested in Warren B.'s current Apple holdings but am too lazy to look it up.

Tim Cook should focus on making Apple’s offerings more compelling than the new competition so users have a reason to stay in their walled garden.

What's even more damning is Shiller was the exec tasked with being IN COURT, and he's also the guy running the app store and obviously based on the past VERY invested in keeping their margins. For HIM OF ALL PEOPLE to be the most knowledgeable and go, you know we should follow this, and to be ignored? That's negligence at the highest levels. Should have listened to Phil.
The long documented chain of conversations that contradict sworn testimony is damning. Dude. How can you lie on the stand?! It's not an IF, I finally went and read all this stupid stuff, and Apple clearly lied. They better hope their campaign contribution somehow trickles down to the US attorney not taking up the case because it's an open and shut case, the evidence is overwhelming.

It occurs to me that if Apple has focused on their customers and not being greedy, they'd not have this second ruling. Because of Apple's actions they got imposed on the. Exactly what they said was so bad in the first place. The levels of self own here are off the charts, I just keep turning this over in my head. Apple, APPLE made it worse for everyone. Thanks Tim and Luca.

This is entirely of Apple's own doing, and they have no one but themselves to blame.
