If you want it to run better with JIT enabled, you can build it in Xcode, too-

but then the app will only live for a couple of days on your device
(at least that happened with one I developed for myself) - unless they changed that

Hey JIT is just a way to compile code at runtime that gives huge benefits to emulators but unfortunately Apple sees it as a security risk, they can’t vet the code ahead of time.

On the Virtualisation, it’s not available even on M1. Unless you get the app from an alt store:

not enough - you also need to run an older version of iPadOS - from before Apple cut out the virtualization code (16.X if I remember well)

Oh the irony if the iPad would become the best Windows tablet. All while macOS cannot be run.

During the time of Windows 8, ironically it was. The Remote Desktop App handled the side swipe gestures perfectly.

But that's actually an argument against macOS on the iPad. I do not want Apple to make the same mistake Microsoft did and hobble their desktop OS for the sake of mobile.

really just insane to see. with this + Delta on iPad finally coming out—and everything that’ll be in i[Pad]OS 18 come spring of next year—been increasingly curious about what used M1 iPads go for these days, they’re looking like an incredibly good investment right about now in terms of a media consumption device.

(someone feel free to argue me out of buying an iPad in replies. too tired to argue back today/I do not need more Apple products)

Thanks Europe!

There's almost no GPU acceleration and no use case. You install it, see the ****** experience and then delete it to get your disk space back.

This type of thing is for social media nut jobs to post screenshots with caption 'LooK moM Iam sO amaZe I installED useLeSS Windows XP on iPad. PleaSe Follow mE to LeArn How I do it'

Maybe I understand this wrong but isn't the current ipad multiple times faster than a machine from 2002? its to emulate OLD operating system like XP which has minimum requirements ofr 233Mhz and 64MB ram.

unless the emulation layer between x86 and ARM chips is the issue.

Shame Apple is so obtuse about JIT. Something like this would be incredible for having quick and dirty access to a linux terminal on the go.

Anyone notice iPhone get hot when emulating Windows XP? I feel like UTM is only utilizing the P-cores of the A-series chips. Any way to allow emulation at greater efficiency?

I remember trying UTM with my old M1 iPad Pro with JIT support with AltStore. Windows 7 barely worked with it.

This is like a dream come true. I would like to run old OS like Windows 95/98/ME/2000 just for the experience, not to run games. Sure, performance is bad, but I don’t care. I just want to look at them.

What’s the catch?
the ones you mentioned should run with decent speed - however the video drivers are restricted. Best experience would be XP 64 bit Edition.

To others it may well still be useful. Just because it’s useless to you doesn’t mean it’s useless to everyone else.

XP was rubbish back then and it is even more rubbish today.

All Apple users laughed at XP back then, so now we going to say woW lOok hoW AmZinG???

Instead of chucking words on the internet use some logic. There's no reason to install really rubbish and really old software on a new device or computer.

Sure, it's a thousand times faster but without GPU support you have no OpenGL or Direct X no matter how fast you new CPU is.

The real question is. If Mac users thought XP was a pile of dung back then....why install that pile of dung today?

I didn't realize that emulation like this could only do Windows XP. /s

Really, if you can't imagine a use for this other than running vintage software, then maybe it isn't for you. No shame in that, but also no need to act holier-than-thou about it.

All Apple users? Are you sure you can speak for the entire Apple community? Again, for you there is no reason to install older OSes on your device. For others, there are plenty of good reasons. People have different preferences, needs, and use-cases.

And why should we assume this can only run Windows XP when it can run Linux distros and other OSes as well? If you don’t have a use-case for it, that’s fine. I probably don’t have a use-case for it, but I know several people who could benefit from it, and I recognize the value of having that option for those who will find it useful.

Not if you sign it with your own Dev Account.
