How do they know how retina graphics will be implemented? How will their app know whether a Mac is capable of supporting retina graphics when they don't yet know the implementation? Unless they can determine how retina will work from the HiDPI graphics in ML?

Lion has supported Retina display graphics since the initial release, and it's well documented and publicly available to developers.

Panic even actively advertises this feature in it's recent Coda 2 release (which is sold in the Mac App Store btw):

Not sure why this is news.

I thought the only thing Lion contained was the HiDPI artwork itself. Are you saying it also explains how to activate or deactivate HiDPI mode based on whether or not the hardware can support it?

HiDPI mode can be enabled on any mac.... the only problem is that the resolution is usually so low that it's pretty much unusable

YES! YES! YES! We're definitely getting Retina MacBooks. I can't believe Apple allowed there big announcement to slip out like this. Looks like the doubling down on secrecy is working out good for you, eh Tim? :D

Read the other comments. This doesn't add up to much. Anyone could add "support", but that doesn't mean that retina computers are coming.

The image code allows you to include 2x artwork, in the same manner as on iOS. You can then test that it's used by activating HiDPI mode. I'm sure that once a Mac with a Retina display is released, the operating system would seamlessly enable HiDPI mode for those machines, invisible to the user.

As someone noted, it's a mode within Lion and Mountain Lion. It's been around since Lion was in Beta. It's a 2x implementation just like the iPhone and iPad.

Ah, yes, it makes sense that the OS would be responsible for enabling HiDPI, not the individual apps. Thanks for clarifying.

We've known about HiDPI for a while. The news here is that the term retina has slipped past the Mac App Store reviewers. With the volumes they work with, it is not difficult for one word to slip past.

Good publicity for the app publishers. If I had any Mac apps, I would be tempted to add Powerbook G5 compatible to the description in the run up to the keynote.

Of course, it is unlikely that even Apple's Mac App Store reviewers have been briefed on upcoming Mac capabilities, so we hesitate to make too much of the news at this point.

So we'll put it on page one for good measure.

Panic did the same with Coda 2. Just done on the assumption.

Yep. The App Store reviewers don't read all that info with a fine tooth comb. When you submit you are taken at your word that your info is correct, your app doesn't crash etc. All they are looking for is use of Private APIs and other obvious no no things.

If there was anything in the Mountain Lion previews or anything else developer that confirmed Retina in the Macs we'd have heard it 50 times over by now.

If I was releasing an app for the App Store, I would also include retina support right now. It only seems natural to offer the feature in the event that next week laptops with retina might drop. While it is only rumor, coming out the door with the support ready is a good idea.

I added Retina display support to my app (Locksmith, free password generator) months ago, complete with a bullet item specifically mentioning it. My submitted screenshots are even in HiDPI mode!

I'm sure several others have as well since Retina support was added in 10.7. This news item is not an indicator of anything.
