The key is in the implementation of the tech in daily life. Apple has had many successes in the past (and a few less successful). But for each product where the CEO promoted the tech years in advance, they have been successful products that have developed and evolved well after launch. I am looking forward to hearing more about the implementation of AR in this wearable. The goal would be to make as unobtrusive and useful as possible.
 
So there is gaming as a use case, no argument. But beyond that? Apple will have to come up with a real compelling use case… being able to see your phone screen in your glasses is geeky, nothing else…
What are those use cases?

AR is going to do well. It can be used to get discrete information on your computer and phone's screen that will only be visible to you and not someone looking at your screen.

AR isn't uncomfortable like VR is because it's just an overlay that can be configured to not be distracting.

VR will be much more smaller and will never overcome the nausea and lack of comfort. It's a problem with no remedy. VR is only fun in small doses.
 
It’s gonna be a confusing initial failure then intentionally take off after a few revs.
Will likely have tons of visual bugs for a long time.

If 3D games with multi million dollar budgets still have tons of visual bugs after 25 years of 3D game development then nobody should expect anything less.

Like watch movies as if you're in a cinema or something?

This will fizzle just like AR has.
There’s going to be plenty of hype around this for sure - the media outlets will be gushing, but when the blast wave recedes, it’ll just be another VR headset that few people but gamers might be interested in.

From a CEO who’s publicly stated several times that people should be interacting with each other more and not living behind an iPhone / I can’t see this diving mask VR display as being something he’d be very enthusiastic about.
I doubt any "fizzle" because this is Apple & not Softy or a stolen/copied project from Sammy.
 
If they manage to make one that doesn't look & feel like strapping a shoe on your face, I'll bite. Of course looking at any of Apple's projects, v1.0 is extremely limited compared to what they'll do just 2 or 3 short years later, so maybe I'll spectate the first few iterations.

Mixed Reality is about the only interesting thing the industry has on its horizon. The rest I'm happy to do without.

Yeah. VR will always be very niche and "meta verse" will spawn many fail videos. Fail people and fail bugs in the fail meta verse.

Mixed Reality or AR will have some uses, much more popular than VR, but will be limited to certain use cases. It will be buggy for years, maybe forever, and never have the high fidelity of regular computing unless a wire was fused to your visual cortex to completely replace your vision, which would be stupid and obscene.
 
I wear glasses. I have to. And believe me, I can't wait until I can take them off every single day. The last thing I would ever do is put on a pair for "entertainment".

I can say with absolute certainty, I am not alone in my thinking. So niche this will remain.
 
Well it's already been invented, so clearly it does exist, and it's not a verb or an adjective, it's a noun, a physical object, a thing. So I think you'll have a hard time arguing for its non-existence.

You have to 'get your VR legs' - and yes it's something that some people can never do. On the other hand, many people can get perfectly comfortable with VR. Once I got mine I can now stay in VR for as long as I want without any nausea whatsoever, or any other kind of discomfort for that matter. VR headsets are already getting smaller, lighter, and better.

It's analogous to learning any number of other skills that don't come naturally; you just have to practice.

I'm very curious to see what Apple has in store, and how they are going to drive the HMD without better GPUs. For example, I'm playing Half Life Alyx and Assetto Corsa at resolutions that are *well above* 4K per eye, and in some titles I'm all the way up at around 8K per eye (Pimax 8K-X, so on wide FOV with Parallel Projections on I have to render about 8xxx horizontal by 4xxx pixels per eye in order for the HMD to be running at 100% steam SS, which is always the minimum SS you want to shoot for if at all possible.) The amount of GPU power this requires is breathtaking, so I'm wondering how Apple has gotten around this reality - as good as the Mchips are, they are nowhere near being capable of that kind of performance.

Me, too. Personally, I am uninterested in AR/VR/etc. "immersive" headsets, but wait with bated breath for a pair of truly dynamic, multi-focal, corrective eyeglasses. Take my money, guys! :D

Go to the Mac Rumors archive, go to 2006 or 2007 when rumors about the iPhone were just floating around or right after it was first announced, and bask in the absolute hilarity of the comments.
