Quite honestly though, any laptop costing over £1000 should come with 8GB of RAM standard.
It still amazes me that Apple is skimping on something so trivial like this.
It still amazes me that so many seem to think that their preferences are universal. Well, not really. Seems extremely common on any discussion forum site.

If you need more than 4GB buy more than 4GB. Not everyone does.

Why don't they offer the 15" standard with 8GB and then allow you to upgrade to 16GB at a cost?
If you think selling at cost is a good business model then by all means go for it yourself and let us know how that works for you. Why would anyone expect this given Apple's past actions?

Sorry to be that person, but "Apple are singular".
Don't just assume that everyone here is from the US. The use of "£" in the OP is a dead giveaway.

So, I can take the majority of replies to mean that most people disagree that laptops in this price range shouldn't come with 8GB standard?

Why are people beggars to their own demise?

One person even suggested that I'm implying Apple should sell things 'at cost', wtf?
I never said that.

Apple already make one of the largest markups of any computer maker in the world, to make themselves more competitive I just think they should be doing these little things.
Then people might stop buying crap like Dell Alienwares.

It's a 3 year old article. In 2009, that might have been true. Windows 7 was released late 2009 and most PCs bought at that time ran Vista, which was a shipwreck and no one wanted it. Now, though, Apple isn't as huge as they were 3 years ago, at least in the computer market. (This is relative to everything else) Their focus now is portable/mobile devices, and they definitely dominate that market.

By 2009, Vista SP1 had shipped and all issues had been resolved. So you can't use Vista as a problem.

Their focus has been the portable and mobile devices ever since the iPod Touch debuted along with the iPhone 3G. Apps, apps everywhere.

Are you just making up stuff? Vista did fine with consumers it had problems in enterprise sales. As far as Apple's percentage in the PC market it depends if you include tablets. If you do they've moved into first place:

Even if you exclude the iPad Apple's market share is still quite strongly growing: http://cdn.mactrast.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Mac-Market-Share.jpg

Apple, prior to the rMBP was doing about 3.6m x86 laptops a quarter in Q12012. Consider we are several months in and they are selling them as fast they can make them I suspect 3rd quarter is going to look rather good for Apple as well. What data are you looking at that shows a fall off?

And where the OP is from he is correct also: in the UK, companies are singular entities. Apple is one such company.

If you're right then the thread title should be "Apple is still trolling with RAM"?

Edit - I just did some research (because I am genuinely interested) and I found the following:

1. The US uses the singular without exception.
2. There is a lot of dissent with regards to the singular being the correct form in British English.

I just ordered a non retina, 15" MBP (base model).

It probably costs them less than 1/10th of the retail cost for RAM.

Why don't they offer the 15" standard with 8GB and then allow you to upgrade to 16GB at a cost?
Hell, they'd make more profit that way anyway.

I was very close to ordering the fat 15", but i wanted the 2.6...which forces the 8GB RAM upgrade.

That SUCKS.
They build their upcharge into the price and you can't get around that.
If you upgrade third part to 16, you're throwing that upcharge straight in the trash.

BTO RAM is the fountain drinks of fast food.

Don't ask for any simple user upgrades to be standard.
If they listen, it hurts the wallets of everyone being resourceful.

At least respond to the right thing. The guy said "at a cost". This is totally different from "at cost". One implies an option with an attached markup.

They do, yet you often pay less on standardized configurations. Anytime something is CTO, the markup tends to be higher.

Like the mark up for the i7-3720QM which is $100 to put into the base configuration Mac even though it has the same bulk price as the i7-3715QM.

I think you mean the 3615QM. I'm not even sure why both are manufactured. They're the same price and overall tdp, yet one is clocked higher.

Whoops, yeah I mean that one. Anyways, yes, you are right. I have no idea what Intel is thinking in selling two similar processors in nothing but clock frequency as difference at the same price.

However, this allows Apple to grab an extra $100... *le sigh*

Damn it. The truth hurts me so much. This is pain in the ass.

As you said, Apple has their own bottom line to think about. If they started offering more ram, it would likely just be factored into the base price. Maybe not the full price of adding ram, but possibly still more than what some people might be willing to pay, especially for those who believe they don't need that much ram or are prepared to make do without it.

They have. Apple is over 90% of the market for laptops $1000 and over. I assume a huge chunk of the rest is gaming machines.

I am not surprised. It seems the general mentality of consumers is that if they are going to be spending that much on a computer, it may as well be a mac, because of this "Apple products are expensive, but you get what you pay for" belief.

So it's either they buy a windows laptop for $1000 or less (and even this price range is coming under pressure from the ipad), anything more, an apple laptop it is. :D

I must say - Apple is smart, boosting their own profits while limiting the profits of their competitors at the same time!
