Its not, but its their contract.. Most ppl loses in this current situation, may takes a hit. .. But the riches company in the world.. Not paying taxes, record bringing sales etc etc. I cannot feel kinda disgusted with them, taking advantage of the situation

Guess they shouldn’t take advantage of zero percent loans either. How dare them. Lol.

I’d be more upset with the death of iTunes cards discounts. Gone are the days of buying at 25% off and reloading for the year. As a result I’ll be canceling some subs or rotating out of iTunes for them.

I don’t recall seeing any sales figures for the UK. Could very well be that sales are way down. Certainly retail shops sales are. Isn’t everyone against subsidies?

And you don’t feel disgusted that the multi-billion dollar corporation that owns the land is charging tenants full rate?

People are confused. Apple is seeing record losses at its retail stores like everyone else. Thus, they deserve a break there like everyone else. The record profit is from elsewhere in their business that has nothing to do with their retail operations.

My income has dropped enormously as part of the pandemic. Does that mean I deserve to get a 50% discount on a new iPhone from them?

Apple pays more taxes than any other company in the world.

No, but if you have apple’s credit card they are letting you delay payments. And you may be entitled to delay mortgage payments. And if you talk to your landlord, your landlord may agree to defer payments.

Apple isn’t forcing anyone to do anything here. They’re offering a deal.

I haven’t done the research but I would not be surprised if a good chunk of the rentals go to INTU which isn’t having a good time. It’s probably a trade off of you help us out in the short term and we’ll commit to the very long term. However the way we have our UK shopping centres arranged, in Apple’s case it’s more a matter of shutting shop than moving elsewhere which doesn’t make sense either. No different I believe to the US where the retail outlets aren’t always on your doorstep.

This is exactly why Apple is one of the worlds most valuable companies. They are ruthless with everything they do. Landlords still likely have mortgages to pay. I am a believer in everyone taking their hit in this pandemic for the greater good (I know I have) but if a company is doing well then I personally believe they have a responsibility to keep the economic wheels in motion.
At least they kept paying their retail employees while their stores were/are closed.

But how the pain from the foregone revenue due to reduced economic output should be shared is a difficult question. A slightly different scenario could be when another landlord, who has lost a tenant due to COVID-19, offers Apple their premises at a significantly lower rent.

Well, looking at it with a business lens, their records profits are not being generated from stores if they are closed. Sales generated online are not bricks and mortar sales so it's a fair request for them to make. Not like they are the only company on the high street doing the same.

There is also a difference whether the money involved is state or private.

So question is are they asking 'only' UK landlords - if not other countries then I'd be curious to know why.

Secondly, we are seeing a sea-change in consumer habits and people are spending less time on high-streets and have been for years (Covid exacerbated the decline but make no mistake, the high-street was in decline long before).

Meanwhile, landlords have just taken for granted that rents would always stay same or increase; they have rarely accepted a scenario that rents would ever decrease. Economically this is unrealistic; these things work in cycles and obviously rents would be expected to have their own cycle.

I don't blame Apple for doing this. The fact Apple have raked in huge amounts in revenue and profit is not a reason they should not always be negotiating the best price for their cost base.

Negotiating lease agreements that you’ve already signed is a thing? I thought only people that couldn’t pay begged for a discount?
Of course it’s a thing. Landlords do it too. If both parties to a contract think that at a new agreement is worthwhile, why not? In this case, landlords may very well jump at the chance to guarantee apple remains a tenant for years beyond the existing lease in exchange for reduced payments in the near term.
