Honestly, this is nuts on every level. Makes no sense. Complaints are one thing, but this more resembles an illness or perhaps a madness.

Besides the fact that I completely disagree, it is also a situation where no one is forcing you to buy the product.

I am speechless, really.

I was just about to make a petition. Thank you for doing this. Even if this does nothing, I want Apple to know that I am dissapointed that they let AT&T charge so much. All I want is 200-500 sms messages included in the $30 data package. Is that reallly too much to ask? I am okay with the increased fee for 3G, but taking away messages is simply unacceptable.
Since AT&T is now getting some negative feedback on their new iPhone plan, I think it might be a nice goodwill gesture on their part to throw in 200 messages with the $30 data plan. We'll see ...

I am not sure a few posters on fanboy forums counts as material negative feedback.... we'll see

i don't know if you own an iphone or if you get a discount but on the first gen there are no discounts for plans and on the second gen no word has been mentioned for discounts.

This is not true. I have a corporate discount on my current iPhone plan. When they first came out there was no discount, but they lifted that restriction months ago. I get 20% off now.

Yeah, you get a discount if the company pays for it. You don't get it if you have an individual discount from your company (difference between CRU and IRU).

I think some people would rather have a full price phone and enrollment in a discounted service plan.

But these days the majority of customers do take the instant rebates for nominally more expensive services.

When the iPhone was full price it did make sense to offer a lower rate, now that you got a subsidized phone it makes less sense for AT&T to not slam you with a standard rate.

There was already a Congressional investigation for still hitting Apple customers for the termination fee when the phone was full price.

Now that things have gone more normal, the online petition may get another Congressional investigation and nothing will likely come of it.

Isn't it true that the 3G data plan is required for all 3G phones with AT&T and that the price is $30 a month? Isn't it true that SMS messages are not included in the price? (I could be wrong on any of these)

There are zero 3G iPhones on the market. If AT&T did lower the price for the yet-to-be released phone because of this petition, don't you think a petition would go up 10 seconds later signed by every AT&T Blackberry and Windows Mobile customer? Why should the iPhone get special, lower pricing for the same data plan?

It is true and regardless of the speed I might add... Blackberry devices and the Palm Centro aren't 3G and they have to have the same $30 data plan (w/o text).

YES!!! MY POINT EXACTLY!!!

Iphone owners and lovers... meet the standard cellular business model in the U.S.

Get over it. I hear Sprint is down a few million subscribers, why not try them out and get the perfect device at the perfect price point for ya...
In the mean time, this 'too expensive' phone for you will be selling millions...

What's super funny about this whole thing is that it was only an Announcement... AT&T or Apple didn't release anything else but here is a phone and here is the monthly cost.

If you don't like it... don't buy it. Remember Apple and AT&T have an exclusive agreement saying they they are making phones in the US for AT&T EXCLUSIVELY.

This is why they haven't offered to sell the thing without contract to help protect the exclusivity agreement.

You have to remember this is CORPORATE AMERICA you are dealing with... It's all about the dollar signs.

Am I the only one that understands text messages is part of a voice plan, not the $30 3g data plan or the $20 EDGE plan. Everyone just complains here, read the website, you'll understand that att has been charging $30 for unlimited 3G data, and there standard voice calling is 39.99 450 min 200 txt its not that hard. The "iphone plan" that was just a name so that apple customers didn't have to worry about what they were actually buying, it was the EXACT SAME PRICE as a family voice plan with respected minutes plus $40 ($20 unlimited EDGE data for the 2 phones in a family plan)...I thought people here were a little more resourceful

I understand what you are saying about the 3g network and I agree. people need to understand that since the iphone is only $199 that it now falls under the normal att pricing...deal with it. However, I am not seeing were the standard voice plan includes 200 txt. I am on the website now, and I don't see it all. In fact if I add it to the cart, it tells me I need to add 200 txt for an extra $5. I'm not complaining about the price, I'll pay it, because it's still all cheaper then my verizon. But just want to know where you say the 200txt was included

Signed it. I am with Verizon now and have been looking forward to switching to AT&T in August specifically for the iphone. Their plans may have just eliminated that option for me...especially since there is no 3G coverage in my area. Sucks to pay $240 more a year and not get the perks...hell it sucks to pay $240 more a year period.

You do realize that Verizon has higher prices for their smartphone plans, don't you? Cheapest iPhone plan on At&t is $70, cheapest smartphone plan on Verizon is $80.

I have a new idea. I am going to start a petition against all knee jerk complainers, all people that can't understand the common nature of what is going on, all people who want everything possible, but don't want to pay for it; and finally, against all people that make stupid petitions.

Anyone interested in that? I will call it the Anti-Stupid Petition: A petition to help rid the world of stupidity!

That has to be the dumbest, most pathetic petition I have ever seen...

* The claim both companies are making about the iPhone 3G being less expensive than the first generation iPhone are false and deceptive due to the price increase for data on AT&T's network. The increase leads to $240 of incurred data charges along the 24 month contractual period, making it more expensive at the end of the contractual agreement.

Oh no! Deceptive advertising! Wow... just like every other ad out there. Do you sign the petitions for all of the print ads with the fine print at the bottom? Or the car dealer ads on the radio that start with an auctioneer spewing out all the hidden fees?

Aside from that idiocy, AT&T has not increased their prices, they have brought them in line with the new service you are getting. You may have noticed at some point with the new phones being announced that they are now using 3G instead of EDGE. Here's a pretty simple thought for you: newer and better technologies generally cost more. If you are flying a two-seater Cesna and upgrade to a private jet, I hate to break it to you, but fuel will probably cost more.

You can also check out this post for more info on how point one is embarrassingly stupid.

* The lack of non-subsidized prices for the iPhone 3G is a clear attempt to limit the consumer's liberty. There are consumers that would not like to extend or purchase new contracts, even if they ultimately use AT&T as their service provider.

Liberty... give me a break. The iPhone is a toy, an accessory, not a necessity. Since when has the option of buying a new, interesting, unnecessary device that happens to cost a lot of money and doesn't include an attached subsidy sales pitch had anything to do with "freedom from control, interference, obligation, restriction, hampering conditions, etc.; power or right of doing, thinking, speaking, etc., according to choice."

This point alone says to me that you should be ashamed of yourself if you signed this petition. People have fought and died for your liberty, and liberty has nothing to do with you paying less for your toy.

* The service plans for cell phone, data, and text messaging, are extremely expensive for the average consumer and are not competitive with other carrier plans. Unfortunately, using the iPhone 3G with another carrier such as T-Mobile is impossible without incurring hefty Early Termination Fees. This is the same attempt to limit the consumer's liberty as described above.

Yes, they are extremely expensive for the average consumer. So make the choice of whether or not this toy is for you. If you can't afford it, guess what, it is not for you. No one is forcing you to buy the iPhone. And the idea that the plan is not competitive is absolutely untrue. Unlimited service plans for every single US cellphone company are $30, without any text messaging, or more. AT&T's plan is not only competitive, it is as good or better than every single other option there is in the US.

For shame.

To start the AT&T plans are very competitive and if not as affordable - even cheaper.

The petition is spot on. Deceptive is not the Apple I once trusted. Folding to AT&T's plans and standards or traditional guide lines is NOT THE APPLE I ONCE KNEW...

Apple has always been the pricier choice and they don't lie about that. With that said I cannot believe they would hide things of this nature.

I don't care about the discounts. I qualify for many of them. My point is that Apple was never like this. They are becoming so big they are growing foolish and folding like other large companies. They are starting to bully - and I have never seen them put such pricing details in fine print. "Half the price" is false advertising... *Other charges apply is not Apple.

Hopefully this will be cleared up by July 11th.

So you're saying you'd like them to admit they deceived the public,
Not unreasonable to me. They are being deceptive, so admitting it is a normal request.
... then allow you to take the iphone to other providers,
This kind of opening up of the market was one of Apples stated goals with the original iPhone.
and finally reduce their profit margin on the rate plans?...
Here you are mixing up Apple and AT&T.

The idea of Apple "allowing" us to buy an unsubsidised iPhone (and that's a statement that I never thought I would have to make), is that only if the tie between the monopolist cell carriers and the phone is broken will there ever be any consumer choice.

That's a noble goal that Apple had previously indicated they were on board with.
