I just found out that my POWERBOOK was in since last week, but nobody told the dude. I dont care tho cos i've got exams comming up and i dontneed the distraction, PLUS my reseller is a total Champ

So yes FINALLY a MELBOURNE 17" BTO has arrived. I'm Kicking myself now for not getting the SINGLE 1GB STICk from apple. COS through them even tho they are more pricey with the RAM, all the discounts make it end up costing an extra $300 for a SINGLE 1GB stick (its gonna cost me another $190 for a 512MB = 1024MB but 2 STICKS!

You reckon they can upgrade for me right there? COAT TAKER?? your the NEXTBYTE reseller and i bought from you guys is that possible??
Thanks
Oh and to everyone, APPLE has reduced their EDU prices so its about $100 less for my setup... whick kinda makes the 1GB upgrade only cost me $200 more!!! i'm kicking myself...

I've read through this a couple of times but I still don't really know what you mean, so forgive me if I don't answer your question properly.

By upgrade I'm assuming you mean change the RAM, in which case yes this can be done in-store. If the machine is new it is also possible for the reseller to buy back any RAM that already exists in the machine and add it to their own stock so that you can fit a higher denomination chip in and save a bit of money.

So, I believe there are 2 x 256MB chips in there already. If your reseller bought those back (about $375 is what we would do it for) then you could put in 2 x 512s or 2 x 1GBs even. The 512s are around $250 each and the last time I checked a 1GB stick was about $780.

Hope this helps...

And interestingly we did a CTO for a 14" iBook with Superdrive last friday and it arrived on Monday!!!!!! That's just weird. So you never know what's going to happen.

17" - BTO COATTAKER

Hey i mean
i have a 17" CTO(BTO) with 1x 512MB (is how they come), waiting for me at the store.

Its from a nextbyte store. I wanted to sell back teh 512MB stick and upgrade to a 1GB single stick.Through apple.com.au it cost an extra $537, but with allthe tax discounts etc it would have end up costing me an extra $350 for it upgraded to a 1GB single stick.

I was going to add another 512MB regaurdless so i would have paid say $200 to have another 512MB stick. So basically for adding another $150 i could have a single stick of ram.....

I was just venting......

Summary:
I just wanted to know if they could be upgrade instore with the RAM.
YOU ANSWERED THAT QUESTION nicely..sorry to confuse you!
Thanks again.

Tell them for them to give you the further discounted price... if they havent already done so... you should be paying no more than $4631 for your setup.. correct?

Double check cos if you were charged at the old EDU price then ask them to refund you the difference.. its the least they could do after their stuff up...

Or give you an icurve or something.

That leads me to another Q:
What laptop stand do you use if any for your PB? Any cheap improvisations besdides using (Books, Erasers )

Do you like the iCurves? I find them to be a bit shaky and unstable, and not all that comfortable, but that may just be me. I'm certainly not comfortable with the price! lol

In aswitcher's case by the way, if it's Apple's stuffup it will be them who'll be providing compensation, if any. They'll probably do it in the form of a gift certificate on next purchase.

still waiting????

Still havent heard about mine either...I hope theyre double checking their work so i dont have to send it back...hmmph.

Ive been pretty patient so far. At least two weeks wait. Should I be getting angry yet?

I wonder what apple is doing..

I got my BTO 1 week after ordering online..

I might get crucial ram (www.crucial.com) as they give lifetime warranties, but i dont want to end up with an "ASWITCHER" scenario..(sorry for example), so please let me know the braand names and serial number or part numbers etc... i want a 512MB single stick..

I was ready to buy Crucial ram but I was worried about import taxes. Will there be any import duties applied to ram bought overseas??

Well I will be interested to see if Apple Australia do anything more than supply me with my replacement PowerBook. It would be nice for them to recognise that I have been without my machine for a few weeks by supplying me with some sort of compensation.

Does anyone else in Australia have any experience of Apple Australia replacing a faulty machine.

I jsut want to cool MY PB abit.I dont have my icurve yet but i have used one with a Wireless Kb and Mouse and its mad.

I guess i will see when i get my new PB what its like.
I'm getting mine for $50 so its not too bad.. i can get the iBreeze shipped from america for $40 as opposed to $70 from streetwise so if i dont like the icurve i will sell it and get the NO NAME brand iBreeze with the inbuilt fans.

IMPORT TAXES: None if under $450 Threshold

Yes I do. My 1.6GHz G5 was declared 'DOA' by Apple Australia (it locked up hard every 5-15 minutes no matter what you were doing with it...it even locked up hard during a few attempted OS X re-installs). Apple recommended I take it to a local AppleCentre, which I did (at Broadway). They called me a few days later and said it had been received by Apple, that they had confirmed it was a DOA, and would ship out a full replacement system. I got the system about 2 weeks later. No gift, no bonuses, no compensation. And that was after the initial G5 was delayed by over a month past the original shipping date.

I wouldn't expect anything except a replacement machine from Apple if I were you.

Well it looks like NextByte are about to do some interesting things in the Australian market. Maybe they will lead the way with customer service.

Well sort of... its actually $500 (if more than $50 GST is collectable then they MAY collect it. But be warned... this only applies to postal items e.g. USPS->Aust Post. If you get it delivered through a courier i.e fedex then the threshold is much lower ($250) and they WILL charge all possible fees they can (as well as the actually delivery fee being much higher to begin with).

if they can only deliver through a courier then I would probably think twice about getting it shipped...
Cheers,
Troy

FTF - thanks

I didint know that!, yeah i always go through USPS and i haevnt ever recieved a charge. My friend got a $1200US laptop and didnt have to pay GST either!

anywas crucial RAM for a 512MBstick costs aroundf $190 delivered last time i checked.... but thats when the exchange rate was closer to 77cents US = $1AUD

But now its low so its probabyl cheaper to get from AUS. MACSHACK stocks viking, but i dont know what they are like?

:) It would be nice, but I wouldn't hold your breath. Resellers simply can't afford to do anything too flashy, and that is why there are some interesting things about to be done.

Wow, I _LOVE_ my powerbook. Sorry, but this post is spurred by a new thing for me. I've hooked my desktop's monitor up to my laptops vid out, extended desktop style. Right now I'm playing a dvd full screen on my desktops CRT, while typing this message and doing stacks of other things all on my laptops screen. Wow, ok I'm sure this isn't 'wow' for most people but the whole multiple monitor thing is new to me.

I thought the laptop would get hotter than this, handling the multiple screens. I'm impressed, to say the least.

A Tip to anyone who tries this, in dvd player you'll have to go into the prefs and choose it to keep full screen going when dvd player isn't active, otherwise as soon as you try to do anything else it jumps back to window mode.

Also, it's been mentioned across these forums but if anyone here chats I suggest you try out the Adium multiple network client. It's great!

Next to try: dvd on my tv while I work on laptop in bed :D Sure, there's not much point in doing this because of my dvd player but....it'd be great!

I saw that pricing thing that made appleinsider by Nextbyte. Not amazing reductions but nice nethertheless.

Looking forward to other efforts

Apple PB 17" BTO received - Melbourne

Yo, i received my PB last night. All seems to work no dead pixels or anyhting.

Plus it automatically created a network for me all i did is plug in my wireless router/print server and its working. 54Mbps router is as fast as my wired DSL modem ( i heavent noticed a drop in performance of speed - although i only have the cheap 256kbs DSL)

This Powerbook is nice but i have had a 17" before so nothing too exciting. Now just waiting for my new iCurve and wireless MX duo.

Also i was reading the manual last night and it says not to lie to PB on a pillow or doona cover as it will block the sit air vents.. i noticed that with my last PB it used to get really hot when using it on the bed.. now i know why. So for those out their that do that ..Dont....

I'm going to get the M-Audio 49 keystation usb keyboard for Logic Audio and Garage Band.. i never had GB before and its pretty slick...

Anyways hopefully other melburne PB come floading in...

Thanks to my RESELLER for being a champ... even though he probably will never read this....

Get the model code (those numbers) and the brand, and search on google.
