well last night my new 15" arrived. What can I say? It is completely beautiful. If it was a woman, I would marry it. Seriously.

No dead pixels, screen is plush fit. They BTO all the right things... 1 single 1 GB stick of RAM, the 5400 RPM 80 GB HD (TOSHIBA MK8026GAX) the 128MB ATI video card, the Backlit keyboard that works flawlessly... mmmmm I am in love.

Now this is what I love most about Apples:

From the time I opened the box, to the time I was watching "Matrix Reloaded" (freeway chase) it took 4 minutes.

In that 4 minutes, I unloaded the computer, booted it up, installed all the software, registered the computer, created an admin account, settup my Logitech MX 900 bluetooth mouse, and loaded "The Matrix" DVD.

It was SERIOUSLY simple.

I think there would be nothing worse than getting a new computer, and then having to spend hours setting it up before you could play with it... so I am very, very happy that it was so effortless to configure.

So the battery had about half charge, and I watched the movie, installed Halo, and played that until the battery ran out and the computer put itself to sleep. :)Then I charged it non-stop up to 100% to configure the battery.

Then dad came home, and settup Airport for our house wireless network. (I couldn't as I needed the password.)

The machine is awesome... truly beautiful. A very brigth screen, and incredibly crisp. Halo looks amazing, and gameplay is great. I get about 63 FPS on iTunes visualliser when playing music.

This computer is everything I love about apple and more: it is mine. :)

PS ask me any questions about it... i will try my best to help out anyone considering buying a new pBook.

Thanks.... :D

The model number for the faster HD is TOSHIBA MK8026GAX. Look in apple menu - about this Mac, - more info. Click on ATA, ATA-6 bus should say TOSHIBA MK8026GAX.

Easy for you to say. I think I am only going to relax about this when I have had it for a couple of days and its completly fault free...

I got the same HDD, i looked it up in google as suggested and it returned a 5400rpm toshiba hdd. so all is good.

This thing is fast, but then again so was my 1.33GHZ 17", im glad i upgraded to this model cos the DVD burner is 4x :D

All my appz open with 1-2 seconds from clicking ( not that this ever mattered to me, but its still nice.)

Also has anyone noticed an improvement in the graphics( i didnt expect the 128VRAM to make an 'everyday' type difference) i mean the icons seems so much more crisp... im not sure if that just because i've been back on a crappy wintel machine but...

Anyways, not sure the purpose of this post..

yeah everything opens bloody fast. :) its very smooth. I love it. and I havent had a 64mb one to compare against in terms of VRAM, but it seems all good. :)

The thing that I must say I'm most impressed with is the multitasking. I mean, the load on everything must be really well handled. When I can extended desktop to a second screen at high res, with a dvd playing on it as well as a few status windows for various things, as well as download multiple things at once as well as have itunes blaring as well as organise my photos in iphoto as well as be connected to 5 different chat accounts across 3 different protocols (via Adium) as well as being telnet-ed into uni as well have a few uni essays open as well as have netbeans ide open (java) and have probably too many other apps open in the background, and it still runs as smooth as silk I'm impressed.
Haha, my windows desktop could barely do one of these things without stuttering all the time.

Aswitcher it's terrible what's happened with yours, but I'm quite sure when you finally get your perfect 17" you'll be happy.

(Oh, and referring back to the earlier talk about reduction of edu prices I didn't notice but it explains something - I ordered my powerbook on the older edu prices and they even took that amount, but a few days later they seemingly refunded me a bit taking my price down to the new edu prices. Seems to be quite a few advantages ordering directly from apple... I don't really care about the price, I just couldn't be happier with my powerbook, though my new tendency to lay in bed playing snes games emulated on the main screen while dvds extended desktop style on my tv seems to be a bit worringly sad )

Hi all,

Not sure if this thread is still going but I just wanted to say my BTO 17" came in and WOW am I impressed! So far, no real issues of concern...the fans seem to come on more quickly than I had anticipated (the left one seems a little jittery) but other than that I am extremely happy...

It is truly a sight to behold when you have one of these babys as your own...sorry Im waxing lyrical....ahhhh... :D

The rest of the family were very impressed. All of them are thinking about buying Macs now...mmuuwahah..

Thats great to hear. Well hopefully I will have a positive post this weke as well as its working day 7 since my pb17 got DOAed. Hopefully by Friday...

Lots of people at AusCERT2004 are sporting Apple PBs and even an iBook. I've met at least 3 people with new 17s. As a percentage of laptop carrying and using delegates the Macs are in pretty good numbers, at least 1 in 5 I am guessing from my crude observations...

Wheres iLife

When i got my new pb, i think the OS was already installed as it took only 5 mins outa the box and i was on it. It also had ilife.. But with my PB i only got two DVD's. I erased and re-installed OSX with the software restore DVD's and it only asked for 1 out of the 2. Does everyone else have the same DVD's?

I cant find iLife anywhere and i want to install it. Is it on one of the two RESTORE DVD's? or do you guys have seperate DVD's? Please let me know ! thanks!

PS i have a 17" BTO PB.

i got mine about 20 minutes before i had to go to work.
when i got home nine hours later my brother had done the reinstall and tinkered with everything already

i only got the two dvds so i'm guessing that it is on there somewhere

You have gotta hate that. I got peeved when my brother took mine out of the box before I did.

I came home to find him stuffing it all back in the box so that I wouldn't know he'd opened it.

aussie_geek :p

locopano, i can help you on this.

Likewise, it only took me 5 minutes to set up my computer. And i only had two DVDs, both a grey colour and labelled 1 and 2

You are only asked for the first DVD, as the second one is purely a restore disk, and not needed when setting up your comp.

And when you are in finder, look in the dock. There is iPhoto, iMovie, iDvd, iTunes, GarageBand, iChat and iCal all sitting in your dock. These Applications ARE iLife.... they are preloaded on to all new Apples. There is no seperate install CD for iLife because it is already on your computer. :)

I erased then re-installed..... and the idvd and garageband arent in my dock. they havent been re-installed? i cant even find them in finder or tghrough a manual serch of folders.

I erased and installed a new fresh copy of PANTHER as MSN and limewire were crashing also i downloaded that security update and wierd windows like stuff started happening.. i had a file download itself and then install garage band went from opening in 1-2 seconds to taking around 10 seconds.. and all this other wierd stuff. Heaps of pop ups and windows like ads telling me about security flaws in my system....

Now all is good and i havent heard a squeak about anyhing...

but i can find GB or IDVD.. i cant find the iLife appz that dont come standard.

PLEASE HELP ME FIND THEM

If anyone out there can tell me the STRAIT FORWARD answer which most likely exists but i dont know please let me know. I just cant seem to find it on those 2 restore disks and want iDVD.

Please someone that has done this before please let me know. Maybe we dont get iLIFE once we've removed it.. maybe it comes pre-installed but not included. (that cant be right) cos people from the last batch of PB's were selling their second copy of iLife on ebay cos they got an individual iLife DVD... soo... im puzzled.. hopefully they have just forgot to ship a bunch of our ilife dvd's...

anyway please just let me know how to find it!

they arent open till 9am.. woops..

I will let you know, but i cant believe i havent figured this out... i tried fooling around with the other DVD's but when i did it took like 50 minutes and it installed what looked like a bunch of languages and again no GB or iDVD? so then i had to re-erase and re-install.. which only takes 20-30.. which is ok... i like to do this every month or so anyways.. just to keep my HDD clean...not sure if thats good for my hdd tho.... anyways

Guys its that SECOND RESTORE DVD..... the first installs the OS, the second RESOTRES all your programs....

The 133622 Number is crazy he guy was a legend.. he didnt even ask me to register my laptop as i said i'm in a real rush and just wanted a simple answer...

LEGENDS LEGENDS LEGENDS......

I'm soo stupid but i swear it didnt work the first time, but i wasnt really paying attention i was just trying to get rid of all the crap that i had downlaoded and update to get my comp working properly again...

there you go..... of course it was simple... i'm still scared from using MS products...

Sounds like you both need to start handing out some discipline to your brothers :D.

That's funny to hear about him stuffing it back into the box. I've repacked my G5 a few times and it never looks as good as it did when it first arrived (can never work out how the little USB covers/loops go).
