Win Win for everyone involved. Very glad that Apple did the right thing by this and very glad for the lady. She actually saved money! That's pretty rare these days. Think how long it took her to do this. Good for her!

Now about my new iPhone?

I do question how one can even function in a society without a mere checking account? I mean, I can not think of a single employer who pays cash instead of checks....and if you get paid via check then you must have a checking account.

How do you think those check cashing places stay in business?

Her easiest solution would be to go down to Wal-mart or somewhere and buy a Visa gift card with the cash, then buy the iPad with her 'credit card'.

I guess she's going to have only download free apps, otherwise you need a credit card, don't you?

And she'll need an internet connection too.

You don't need to own a computer to use the iPad. Apple can activate it for you just by plugging it in at the store or any machine (I'm assuming they brought a laptop with them). Once it's turned on, you really only need a computer to back it up.

I had mine activated in store when I bough it and didn't sync it for several days.

Very nice

Why does a nice gesture by Apple lead to do many negative comments? This has nothing to do with the need for a checking account, a computer, or other things she could/should have purchased.

It's a simple story of a company with an outstanding product trying to keep people from buying and reselling them thus keeping them from honest buyers. Faced with a real example of unintended hardship their policy caused, they came up with a workaround and offered up a free iPad to the woman whose story prompted the change.

Good for her, and good for Apple.

Maybe Apple should have thought about that and brought her a nice new 8-core Mac Pro with a cinema display!!

Apple is now a slave to news..A good thing imho.

Maybe not but its a GREAT week for Apple.
Actually great quarter.

This means more sales, hopefully allowing for Apple Gift Cards to be purchased and used to purchase AppStore apps for iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad ... means more app consumption, bigger ecosystem for the future and staggaring feedback for even BETTER devices down the road.

Win Win Win for everyone.

Fixed Income can mean anything; even retirement via Pension Plan, not just welfare that many ppl immediately think of. Good that Apple is listening to customers in other news and potential customers alike.

Since when is an apple account needed to own an iPad?

You have to connect iPad to a computer to activate it. When you do this you must enter your apple account in iTunes. You can do this at home on your computer or the apple employees will do this for you at the store.

She probably has an Internet connection. And he can buy iTunes gift cards with cash to buy apps. Despite that, I think a netbook would have been more what she was looking for. Something with more versatility and a DVD drive.

I see the iPad as a complimentary device for people who already have a dedicated laptop/desktop.

Isn't it even legal to refuse cash to settle a debt?

Yes you must accept cash for all debts, but there was no debt here. As such, apple (like all retailers) can refuse cash.

She has no debit card in her name...ok u can go to almost ne bank with bad credit and mine is bad still open up a checking account and get a debit card. In fact TD bank lets u do all of that including have the card ready in 5 min. Or **** go to the gas station and get a money order lol. Am i missing something here?

Even if she did not have one, she could have gotten one for free with a debit card and been able to circumvent this

Or maybe she is isn't the brightest bulb in the box...

Wow, so many clueless people on this forum... I don't have a checking account thanks to the great American banking system fraud. Let me explain how this works (and more people than you realize have this issue in America.)

I had a bank that lost $1000 from my account which made me $3 overdrawn. As I was fighting with them to show how it was their mistake, they were racking up overdraft charges until my account became $503 overdrawn ( the 3 plus 500 in overdraft fees.) Finally someone saw the mistake and they reversed all charges... but it was too late, by that time they had already reported me to ChexSystems, a completely unregulated private company that all banks go through before you can open a checking account (checking accounts do not depend on your credit though they say they run your credit, but they ALL go through ChexSystems.) Once you are on ChexSystems, even if you have proof that it was the bank's error and you have a letter from them as I did, you are still stuck on ChexSystems for 10 years and NO bank will open an account for you at all. I've tried them all.

So this lady is most likely on ChexSystems which is why she can't get a checking account. To the poster who said "and if you get paid via check then you must have a checking account" have you not heard of check cashing stores? This was my only solution. You can cash your payroll check at a check cashing store (for a very high fee) and some of them also provide prepaid Debit Cards. That's want she could have done.

Many, many people are in this situation regardless of income, status, race, etc. In my case I make $95,000 per year with my own business and I can't have a checking account and have to cash my checks (that are written in my company's name) at a stupid check cashing store thanks to the stupid way the banking industry conducts business...

NOPE. Apple offers free set up at time of purchase to activate it.

man, she better consider herself lucky haha

Well, good for that woman on getting a free iPad, and good for Apple on reversing their cash only policy, however, the story seems kind of sensationalist.

Money in a backpack? Huge wads of cash?

We're talking about a lousy $500 here. It's not like the woman was carrying around $50,000 in bills in her backpack.

If that woman needs a backpack to carry $500 worth of cash, then what is she going to do if she decides to purchase a Mac Pro one day? Will she transport her cash in a wheelbarrow to the Apple store?
