Hi all,

Just sent my 2017 iPad Pro 10.5 to Apple for battery replacement. It had dropped from its original capacity of around 8k down to 6k and in daily use I was seeing the impact. Does anyone have experience with Apple’s replacement service? Do they return the iPad in the same condition as I sent it? I’m worried about someone opening it then not re-sealing it correctly

Thanks,
mario

Really? Interesting. They specifically said just to back it up not wipe it so I assumed they’d send mine back. Either is ok I guess

The backup they told you to make is so you can restore all your data when you receive the refurbished iPad. A refurb iPad from Apple is like getting a new one. Good deal. :D

Did you just send it in, or did you have to first convince Apple to service your battery (at your expense)?

I just opened a case on their web site. They sent me a box with shipping labels and it went out today. Total estimated cost is $117

Confirmed, they don't have a battery service per se like the iPhone. They will just replace your iPad with another replacement unit. I spoke to an Apple Genius today.

As long as it’s a genuine Apple refurbished unit I’m fine with that. I buy those when I can anyway

Confirmed. They sent me a replacement iPad. Excellent customer service here. Total time from start to finish was 3 days. Very impressive!
I sent an iPhone 6s for a replacement battery. Got the same one (same serial no) back by return of post. Not as cheap as third party but, at a little over £50, I thought it worthwhile.

Very easy and fast, as others have said. Excellent customer service, imho.

They will replace the battery in yours only if the back is engraved. Expect it to take 6 weeks. Otherwise, it's a Refurb.
Is that true in-store also?
The Apple Chat said to me that they only do the refurb thing if there's other issues beyond the battery.

Do we think that's factual or just what they're told to say on chat to customers?

I do not care what they said I would never send it without wiping it first.
i agree. Partly because find my iPhone (iPad) would still be turned on on the device. Any time I’ve had in house genius service they‘ve always had me turn that off as part of the process. I’m not a guy that worries about data stuff but even I would never send in a device that wasn’t wiped.

I was told this weekend that they don’t swap them out anymore unless your under warranty still. I was told all iPads get shipped in for battery service. Can anyone tell me if they have got a swap out at the store without any warranty ?

Quick question: how did you check the status of your battery before you requested a battery replacement? Thanks.

They do not replace the battery in store in your iPad. Period. If eligible for battery replacement, they swap for a Refurb unit — what you pay depends on warranty.

Only if your iPad was engraved, will they replace the battery in your iPad. That gets sent to a service center with a promise to return in 4–6 weeks though I've heard of people getting them back in as little as 10 days.

If they suspect anything wrong—even if they can't detect it (!) — or you want to upgrade, you will not be offered the $99 refurb. It will cost a lot more and you'll be offered scrap value for your old one.

Been there twice.
