Apple knew this was a problem long before launch and developed the bumper case.

And for all we know, apple posted these jobs after launch and just back dated the listing date.

I am not stating whether Apple did or didn't know before launch. I was just commenting on the previous poster's argument that the iPhone wasn't launched until 7/24.

The conspiracy theories in this thread are really entertaining to read. I really hope you guys don't believe the BS you're saying though. That would be pretty sad.

Um, this is how i see it:

1. apple designed the iphone 4 with a crappy antenna design
2. apple released the iphone 4 and there are huge hardware issues
3. apple fires the iphone 4 antenna staff
4. apple denies any antenna issues to the public
5. apple begins to hire new antenna staff to fix the antenna problem....for the iphone 5
6. iphone 4 customers are screwed until the iphone 5 comes out
7. apple will release the iphone 5 next year with a revolutionary and magical feature, the iphone 5 now makes....phone calls.

:apple: = Fail

Perhaps if they tested the iPhone 4 with a carrier that did not have the largest percentage of dropped calls by a large margin (AT&T) they might have noticed an antenna issue before going to market.

Crazy

I've had all generations of iPhone the 4th gens reception is better than my 3GS, conclusion?
A hole lot to do about nuthin!!!

June/July: Hire the engineers
Aug/Sept: Design a long term solution
Oct/Nov: Test the prototypes
Dec/Jan: Retool the factory
Feb: Sell the iPhone 4.5

The cycle is way longer than that. It's likely that work on the current design begun soon after the release of the release of Iphone 2G, half a year - a year later the latest. What can be achieved in 1 year is 2G->3G or 3G->3GS. Not a design like 2G->Iphone4.

So short term solution: June 2011, the earliest.

Long term solution: June 2012 or June 2013. Unless they choose that going back to the old design (2G, 3G, 3GS) is their "long term solution".

Yesterday everyone was bitching because nothing was being done. Now it appears that something is moving forward and people are still bitching. The fanboys may be the thing that brings down Apple.

I liked it better when they just made computers. You iPhonies are a fickle bunch.

The conspiracy is that apple designed a faulty antenna system and realized it too late in the game, so they created their FIRST iphone case ever....the bumper, to help with the reception issue and make a buck off it. The antenna will be fixed, but only in the iphone 5. iphone 4 owners will be screwed.

I don't get how this image is funny or relevant. The phone doesn't have any reception issues. It works fantastically.

What it has is an odd design flaw causing bars to drop momentarily when intentionally held the wrong way.

Drawing a picture of a long antenna sticking out of the iPhone doesn't even correctly represent a humorous version of the issue...

its just wrong

"screwed" in the sense that we have a great product that works? Does it have a flaw...i think it might, but its a non-issue.

An "issue" would be a problem that prevents the device from working properly.

The iPhone 4 undoubtedly works properly (i Know, I have one).

What I don't understand is why it's taking so long for someone to log into the forums with the name "deathgrip". Come on people get on the ball!

I consider holding the iP4 in your hand, touching the left corner/black seam, while either on a call or surfing safari, and having the reception slowly drop until the connection is 100% gone.

That is an issue and that is what people experience.

To be honest, I think this is in anticipation to the iPhone inevitably being offered on Verizon in 2011. With the announcement of:

a)rumours of Verizon's LTE network going live in November '10
b)rumours of the elusive Verizon iPhone

Since LTE operates on an entirely different frequency band (700MHz for Verizon) I'd guess this requires some new antenna design. It could also be CDMA compatible for operation where LTE is not available on Verizon's network.

Just thinking out loud. Of course this is all speculation...maybe Apple just needs more experience with antenna design.

Disclaimer: I own 0 Apple products before anyone accuses me of being blinded by fanboyism.
