I haven’t been paying attention until this article to know if they are always this price, but as of Sunday morning, they are $349 on Amazon for new.

I don’t see how $340 is a great price when the full-size iPads were $250 new last holiday season.

32GB storage is the main issue with $250 price tag. 2020, 32GB simply not enough.

iPad Air and Mini 5 price have not seen drop during holiday period, may be time has come for it (at the same time new iPad for year 2020)

Other reasons to go get refurbished - apple card discount, apple gift card and such ... at times apple telephone sales team even tops some discount for new ad well as refurbished item as well, YMMV

No one’s trying to sell you a new mini 5. But the mini 4 is near the end of its useful life. It has an A8 (though 2GB); all the other A8 devices didn’t get iOS 13, since they only have 1GB. The mini 4 may or may not get iOS 14. But my mini 4 is significantly slower than my A9/2GB iPhone 6s, and that’s because of the A8.

The mini 5 is a smaller version of the Air 3, and with an A12/3GB it should be good for another four years or so.
Who in the world wants to put that cancerous iOS 13 in the iPad mini... 😓

I keep a Mini 5 in my car on the dash with a ProClips mount. It is, while in my car, my phone for all intents and purposes. I keep my phone in my pocket and use my iPad for everything including making and receive phone calls. WiFi calling on the cellular model makes it a phone. With its own cellular connection it has GPS so maps work well. I have the 12.9 Pro at home but for outside the house the Mini is fantastic. I can easily take it inside with me to surf while I wait for shopping to wrap up. Ha.

I think the refurb store is Apple’s way to discount brand new product to appeal to “value shoppers” while protecting full-price sales to customers who’ll never buy “second hand“ for emotional reasons.

It also lets Apple run low-key clearance sales of product nearing end of life without tipping off potential full price customers.

It’s all very clever, if so.

Sure, if you’re not satisfied with performance upgrading makes sense if you can afford it. Personally my Mini 4 doesn’t bring any frustration so far, I’m surprised to hear that it does for someone. I guess YMMV with Apple products more than it should.
I’m not sure what you mean by that. But don’t be surprised that a five year old device is a little slow. Just the difference in the unlocking speed of TouchID compared to my 6s is somewhat annoying. Maybe it depends on your basis for comparison. Do you have a newer iPhone?

I agree, I don’t see them refreshing Mini any time soon. And in 3-4 years I’m afraid they will neither be able to afford releasing same design all over again from marketing pov, nor justify the complete design overhaul from sales perspective. Which raises the question if the 5 is the last Mini.
Just the mini’s widespread usage in the healthcare sector is probably enough to get it updated, but there are a lot of pilots that depend on it, and point of sale is a reasonably big vertical as well.

It would be rather easy just to update the A12 and RAM to then-current specs, but at some point the design will likely be refreshed. That could very well be in the 6th gen, 2022 or whenever. Ideally, same sized screen in a smaller body. iPad Pro style smaller bezels with FaceID would be my preference, but who knows 🤷‍♂️

i still use an old mini a great deal, and it’s my favorite size for a home-based iOS device, but I got the “big” iPad because the mini’s price was and remains too dammed high.

I get that the mini has nicer specs, etc, but when I’m ipadding, they‘re simply not worth extra cash. And I’m not paying $100 for a smaller screen. /shrug

Why (serious question) wouldnt you prefer to save $100 and get the big iPad? Or grab the previous mini on eBay?
The mini 5 has the same specs as the $499 iPad Air (except a smaller screen and battery). It has little in common with the $329 model.

Not really. You can buy new iPads for cheaper than Apple's refurbs all day long from various reputable retailers.

I bought a brand new mini 5 from Microcenter for $320, and that was 4 months ago.
Unless you're gifting it, refurbs are practically new. The refurb product itself is indistinguishable from new. It just comes in a refurb box.

Not many people have access to a Microcenter.

So this means new iPad mini?
How about a move to face id and smaller bezels?

I keep hitting the home button when i write on the current mini...
And I don't like writing on a bigger ipads because of smudging.
Turn the iPad Mini upside down, and then draw.

Perhaps it’s on the horizon, but what would be insanely great is if :apple: could reduce the bezels while keeping the 7.9” display and call it iPad mini Pro.

Yes, give it the same rounded corner bezels and squared off edges like the iPad Pro.
The current look just looks very dated.

The iPad mini can actually adopt the same all-around slim bezels like the iPad Pro without the requirement of FaceID as soon as Apple introduces an iPhone with TouchID integrated in the Power button that design language will transition to the iPad mini, Air and iPad (10.2").

I also suspect that the iPad Pro will have FaceID and TouchID on PowerButton when this happens. The 2018 iPad Pro seems to be a beta tester product, for example to charge the ApplePencil it should be on both long sides of the device, charging and attaching accessories should also be integrated with the ApplePencil method. Have all those magnetic ports for PD and data bi-directional, that is a product that seems miles apart from a functionality aspect. Not sure if USB-C should still be on this type of device go forward, but the speakers really need to be under display vice the four areas on the top and bottom.

Not sure what to make of this conspiracy, but refurbs depends on availability. In Canada no Mini 5, only Mini 4. In the USA store Mini 5 and 4.

If you are complaining about the price shop elsewhere, I like that I can hold the Mini in one hand, something I am unable to securely do with any other iPad size. With flat sides and moving TouchID to the power button this device is perfect.

The Apple Refurb store...

”Where the prices are what the normal MSRP’s should be”

For a device that gets used daily, the price breaks down to pennies a day compared to an Android tablet. Seriously I own both and I can tell you this the Mini is the best all rounded device even compared to the iPad Pro, the only issue is that iPadOS limits 3rd part app usage outside of the AppStore. My Android tablet is only used for entertainment while my Mini is used for entertainment and everything else.

Someone convince me I don’t need a mini 5 to go along with my iPad Pro 11”

Only your wallet or credit card can effectively do that ;-P

Just quit quoting me already. All your points are already debated on my response on page 2.

While iPad Mini 4 users may have little reason to upgrade, those seeking to do so can reduce the cost by trading in or selling privately.

If you are happy with the Mini 4, don’t let others try to convince you otherwise.

I upgraded someone from a Mini 2 to a 5 and their were blown away, but that is a high performance, etc jump. For 4 users not so much. Be happy with what you have, I get my Apple hardware discounted or free so I usually upgrade when something new comes out and I Need It.

I’ve got both, they compliment each other well. The pro with keyboard is used like a laptop, and the mini is used like an actual tablet. Get the mini!

Neither a conspiracy nor a complaint. I’m giving Apple kudos on inventing a channel which lets them sell virtually the same product at two different price points.

I’ve bought many “refurbs” myself over the years. They all looked brand new. I don’t believe Apple’s line that all refurbs get “a brand new outer shell and battery“. How is that economically and logistically possible with a complex/intricate product like an iPhone or a MacBook? Or a glued-together product like a watch?

(unless the “new outer shell” is actually a new "plain box”. And the “new battery” is... well... that was in the product already! Clever wording. Saying one thing, meaning another. Not really saying anything untrue. Clever.)

Not helping! Haha. I feel like I don’t use my pro enough, mainly because it isn’t the most comfortable to use 1 handed. I can see myself using the mini allll the time!
