Sad state of affairs when buying something new can no longer be considered “pretty much a guarantee to work”.
Well i suppose views other than mine are available of course, but I'm sure I once read somewhere on Apple's website that Apple Refurbished stock are all individually tested. Pretty sure their new stuff isn't all individually tested: it would take too long. No doubt a sample of new stock will be tested as part of QC.

Yeah, I can believe that. But it is one of the loudest Macs of the last ten years during idle. Even Apple themselves state so in their Technical Specifications.
Its all relative though isn't it?

Not to mention, I'm much more concerned about how loud a Mac gets under load. This Mac Studio remains practically silent even when its working flat out.

The fans on previous Intel Macs were much, much louder when installing DropBox for example....

And therefore it would not hurt to turn the fans down even more between the loads, right?

I've no idea.... I'm guessing only Apple's engineering teams would know why they're on at a certain rpm at all times, but presumably that's to ensure the long-term health of the components?

When I got mine, it was on my desk in front of me and with no background noise at all, I could hear the fans. Which was a bit strange. But as soon as there's any noise at all, they're totally obscured. Since mounting it under my desk, I can't hear them at all.

So on with the MacBook Pros they don't care about long-term health?
I don't think it's about long term health. I think it is because for professionals it is easier to work with a constant noise that almost never changes than to have something that always changes its sound even if it is barely noticeable.
The other option would be that they tried to future proof their design for future and hotter chips. But I hope not. 😬 That would mean they intend to keep the noise for multiple years to come.

Jepp, that's the solution for now. 😞

The MacBook Pros are a different form factor though so will have a different thermal design and thermal envelope. Not to mention, maybe they have different tolerances for fan noise for a device which is going to be sitting on your lap/directly in front of you vs one which will be sat on a desk, slightly further away from you? Also one is battery powered.

This is the sort of thing I wish Apple would talk about - if they explained some of their engineering/design decisions it would maybe quell some of the noise that happens with stuff like this. But maybe its just one of those things that nobody outside forums like this is even talking about.

Personally, the Studio has quickly become one of my favourite ever Macs as its so capable, quiet & compact.

Only 10% off for refurbished? Less than enticing.
Exactly. I don’t recommend buying refurbished now. It used to be at least 15% off.
Only 10% off?!!! For that one can opt for education store offer and get new device since education also 10% off isn't it?
Agreed—but clearly Apple knew what they were doing when they offered them at 10% off, since they're all gone now ;).

Was probably because of the wait times for new models.

I grabbed one before they were gone, $200 off is better than the states tax free holiday "discount". Upgrading from a 7 year old MacBook Pro (which sits in a dock on my desk all day). It is to arrive tomorrow for me.

If you turn off all the sound on your room then bend over a stick your ear to it. Mac Studio is the quietest Mac I’ve ever owned even under serious load
Whereas mine was audible when idle while my 2017 iMac with poor cooling was inaudible.
