Starting on Monday of this week, Apple began preparing to ship out the first batch of gold Apple Watch Editions to customers who pre-ordered in April. MacRumors readers have begun seeing credit card charges for the devices and have received shipping notifications and courier information from Apple. Some of the first Apple Watch Edition orders will begin arriving tomorrow.

The Apple Watch Edition is available in yellow gold or rose gold and is priced between $10,000 and $17,000. Given its high price tag, the Apple Watch Edition delivery process is somewhat different than the delivery process of Apple's less expensive watches, with customers receiving emails asking them to set up a delivery time.

iFixit's Kyle Wiens ordered a 38mm Apple Watch Edition with a Black Sport Band and shared his tracking information and courier emails with MacRumors. His order was initially placed on April 10 and shipped out on Thursday, May 21. His delivery date was originally set for Sunday, May 24, but was moved up to Saturday, May 23.

Wiens tells MacRumors that while he initially ordered the Apple Watch Edition to do one of iFixit's traditional teardowns, he had second thoughts and ultimately decided iFixit couldn't afford to do the teardown. Wiens will be returning the Apple Watch Edition to Apple, but if an iFixit enthusiast has an Apple Watch Edition they wouldn't mind loaning out, he can do a non-destructive metallurgical analysis on the device.

Thus far the Apple Watch Edition has only been available in small quantities in some of the luxury fashion boutiques that have featured the Apple Watch, and it's also been seen on the wrist of several celebrities and designers including Katy Perry, Beyonce, Jay Z, Karl Lagerfeld, Pharell Williams, and more. With shipments going out over the next few weeks, we may be seeing more Apple Watch Edition models in the wild.

Wow, no deliveries until now? (unless you got handouts or bought them at a boutique)

With the amount of profit per watch involved, I would have made sure those were flying out to customers first thing.

To be able to spend the price of a car on a watch that will be obsolete in 5 years....that's another world.

ah no. no guts, no glory, dude...

I hear that Jony Ives will personally be delivering them to the 5 people that could afford it....

Jony Ives? I thought it was being delivered by Tim Cook. I thought Edition owners were supposed to get the ultimate VIP treatment from Apple. What's more VIP than Tim Cook delivering. :D

"Decided they can't afford it"?

More like, "wanted a screenshot to look important and frantically cancelled the order after the shipping notification..."

The Apple Watch Edition was taking too long to ship, so I canceled my order and opted for another Apple Watch.

Yes, I just told a $16,350 lie, but it felt good.

What a waste for something that will be outdated in a year.

The people who can afford something like this don't mind replacing it in a year. It's only a waste if you're not the target market. Though, I would say I'd rather people with that much money give it to charity and buy the SS or Sport model instead.

I don't know how to feel about this. I bought the sport because it was all I thought should be spent at this point but at the same time wish I had the means to go all out with the gold version. I don't think I would buy gold if I could but what does it matter, I can't but wonder would I. Would you?

I wonder if these will be shipping in armored boxes.

It does seem strange that these $10,000+ devices will be floating around in run-of-mill apple boxes.

So far there have been no extra bands available for the Apple Watch Edition, what if your band wears out (they will at some point)?
I somehow wonder if the Edition thing was a step too far for Apple. I like the idea (not that I could afford one), but the way they have dealt with selling them seems not that great. At that price people need more info about bands, upgrades etc.

Spending 16k on a freaking Apple Watch is so dumb. Shows the stupidity and excess of our time.

No dumber than what a homeless person would think about you or I spending $750 for a SS Apple Watch. Its all relative. If I made $50M a year, spending $16K for a watch is actually a WHOLE LOT less than me spending $750 with my income....
