These are not pop-up ads, these are not big video ads, these are just apps being pushed to the top of the homepage and search results.
It shouldn’t take any more data than usual, if you open the App Store, app suggestions appear. It’s just that these ones are being paid for.
It’s still an advertisement you have to view. Pop-up ads/Vids or not It honestly does no good. Serves no good purpose. It's just a distraction.

It seems as though Apple is covering this story and yesterday's increased services pricing blunder with their more "buzzworthy" updates. Smart of them as they will only fly under the general public's radar even more effectively that way. Most people won't even know or care that significant updates were released ("Really? ANOTHER update?! Didn't my phone just update, like, last year?") :)

People are actually getting fired up to defend having more ads on their screen, gotta love it.
I don’t understand.. why would people defend having to see ads. Especially on a stock app. We are paying expensive premium prices to see ads? Okkkkkk…. Time is a valuable asset. Time is money.

Unwanted junk cluttering your view is a core feature of Microsoft. The lack of that is one reason I switched to Apple. I felt like Apple was trying to get me the best hardware and software for my needs. I didn’t feel like they were trying to figure out how to monetize me in every way they could. It is what helps me almost believe they protect my privacy. It is what convinces me to pay a premium for their products. This seems like a very risky move.

Also, I think the Apple taking a 30% cut for apps in the App Store is steep. But I can almost accept that if the App Store is about protecting customers and that costs Apple money, thus the fees. If the App Store is about selling ads then it is harder to believe that.

The bottom line is this seems like a short term strategy that has long term reputation/goodwill implications that aren’t worth it for Apple.

Eh. I don’t care about ads in the App Store. I don’t browse the App Store anyway. I go there strictly to find specific apps and get updates. That’s it.

Now if they start polluting stuff I pay to use (Apple Music, my iCloud folder, or Fitness+), then Apple and my wallet will have a falling out.

The iPhone is beginning to look less and less attractive as a platform to me. Having ads on the platform itself is just unacceptable.

I REALLY wish someone could make an ad-blocker that strips this crap off the screen.

The internet itself would be unusable if not for ad blockers. Now the iPhone is getting this way too.

I understand ads paying for things that are offered free but I pay $$$ per month for this phone.

Does anyone else.. not care about this? It's an app store, where you go to buy apps. Stores typically have ads for the products they sell.

I'd be livid if ads started showing up elsewhere in the system, but in this specific place, who cares?
I go to the supermarket to buy food and other items. Imagine if after walking down an aisle every few feet/meters/your preferred unit of distance :p a Kroger employee shoved an ad (flyer) in my face. I'd be absolutely livid.

This is basically what Apple is doing.

On a similar note, lots of grocery stores purposely change where products are located, place indulgencies next to necessities (eg. candy next to water) and/or place items directly in the line of travel, so that you must look at them. Has a similar effect to advertising.

That's just the psychology of retail. Not to be lumped in with advertising imo, but I see your point.
