Macenstein claims to have received information from sources claiming that support training for OS X Snow Leopard has begun and that Apple's new operating system will very likely launch on Friday, August 28th.
According to reliable sources, support training for Snow Leopard has begun, signaling an imminent release of the next major release of OS X. Sources claim a date of Friday, August 28th is extremely likely.
The source also provided several screenshots of Snow Leopard training instructions for AppleCare support representatives. The news corroborates claims from several other sources that Snow Leopard will ship on the 28th, ahead of Apple's announced September launch window.

MacRumors has also heard that from a purported AppleCare representative that support staff at their location had just been provided with Snow Leopard discs (containing the rumored "Golden Master" Build 10A432) for installation on their primary machines. The source noted that OS X Leopard was distributed to AppleCare representatives approximately one week before its October 2007 launch, leading the source to suspect that a Snow Leopard release may in fact be right around the corner.

So assuming this is correct...will those of us that have a newer machine have to wait for the new OS to ship out (end of Sept) or will it be available via a download?

I wonder how often these reliable sources really are. I read about reliable sources say this and that, and more often than not, they are wrong. They should use id's stance on release dates.

This I don't believe. It's not like Apple's had time to test AppleCare's software on Snow Leopard. AppleCare Reps may have a Mac near them that has Snow Leopard on it, but I highly doubt it's their primary machine or OS. In fact, the last time I called AppleCare for Leopard support (circa Oct. 2007) my Rep. didn't even have Leopard installed. He had to move to a different machine.

They could still issue a press release tomorrow. It's not like they have to do it the same way they did with Leopard.

If August 28th is the real date, I'd say Monday is the latest they could issue a press release and start accepting pre-orders, although this seems a little late to me. Tomorrow would be better.

i don't know. i kinda don't like that it might be coming out so soon. I have been waiting since march in order to purchase my first mac. I've been waiting for snow leopard. Then i hear rumors of an iMac update and price drop in the fall, and i don't know whether to wait for that or even if it's the rumor is true.

Now that snow leopard might come out early, I'm not sure if i would want to wait for the iMac update. I've been waiting for almost 6 months, and I don't know if i can wait any longer after SL is released.

If SL was released at the end of september, that would be closer to October which would be the likely time that an iMac refresh would happen.

One week isn't much time to generate hype, but then again they don't want to cut into their music event hype. I suppose I could see it happening the 28th, but only if they announce it tomorrow.

If you've been waiting 6 months, then you should just hang in there for the last few months. It seems like the next iMac update will be worth it.

Snow Leopard Coming

I think it's quite clear that Snow Leopard is going to be here within a week or two.

With all the bad feelings Apple incited in the push notifications delay I think they could garner a bunch of praise from the fanboys if they push this out earlier than previously announced.

start accepting pre-orders

They don't have to accept pre-orders early. With their expedited shipping, they could begin to accept them 2 days before, or even the day before and people would get it on the release date. I'm sure they're anticipating heavy sales, so they've probably manufactured loads of stock. And as many others, I've already ordered and paid for mine, as I'm eligible for the up-to-date upgrade.

Also, as stated earlier, just because they did it a week before with Leopard, doesn't mean they'll do the same with SL.

TBH though, 28th would be perfect for me, as I'd be back off holiday then xD. Apple doesn't have to release a press release, especially when sites like MacRumors are constantly checking everywhere. The minute it pops up on the site, or even when the site just goes offline, all the gadget sites will be over it 'SL IS COMING BLABLABLA'. Until we see that, lets forget about Snow Leopard ;)

That's good news. I'm running it for a week on an early 2008 MBP. It's a slick, fast, and stable platform. No bugs, crashes, or incompatibilities so far (just Backup Bouncer due to a very old lib). I like the small UI refinements and the new Finder is much snappier. Boot time (until the Desktop appears) is only slightly faster, but the difference to Leopard is, when it appears it is instantly usable and not as in Leopard already showing but still blocked by background initialization for quite a while.

Safari's new process model is also great. I sometimes have very many tabs open with a lot of Flash ads. This can ramp up CPU utilization to almost 2x100%. Then you just kill the Flash plugin's process, what makes all Flash ads disappear without affecting your browsing session at all and CPU usage gets back to 1-2%.

It is. It's just the Snow Leopard installer-icon which appeared in build 10A432 which apparently is the GM after all.

Ok, that makes sense.

Apple doesn't have to release a press release, especially when sites like MacRumors are constantly checking everywhere.
It's standard behavior for companies to issue press releases to announce their products. Apple has always issued a press release for all of their products, they will issue one for Snow Leopard as well, like they announced Snow Leopard in the first place.

Usually with Apple, September means "September 31". I'd be shocked if it actually shipped in August! Can't wait to try it out. It's only $30 too!
