So tell me, if I took biometric scans of your fingers and eyes by phishing you or putting skimmers over the real things, how would you change your fingers and eyes? Burn them?

If someone got my biometric fingerprint, I'd just reset to another finger. That's 9 other attempts, right?
If that doesn't work, I'll have to resort to my toes. That's 19 other attempts :)
 
So I was reading a Computer World article that says Apple will replace passwords on the iPhone with finger print & iris scanners and they will be what secure your banking. This is incredibly dumb. At the end of the day, you still have to translate your fingerprint or eye scan into ones and zeros. If someone grabs those ones or zeros, or records scans of you a la ATM PIN scanners, then you are screwed. By using biometrics, you will NEVER be able to change what secures your banking. With passwords, you can change your secret code any time. With a fingerprint scanner, you have to chop off your finger. With an eye scanner, you have to gouge out your eye.

People, biometrics are inherently flawed.


That article says that they could use biometrics in conjunction with a secure short-distance wireless chip. Meaning only transactions from that individual chip/phone will work, so if someone grabbed your "ones and zeros" they would be useless. Of Course someone could steal your phone and then break your security but then you could simply block the security chip.

I would welcome the technology my self, a iris scan with a finger print scanner and a security chip would be far far more secure than any password.
 
My question, is it really that serious? To better secure what, a bunch of lame random photos, and a contact list full of family and friends, a boat load of free apps? Since when did our current password method been deemed incompetent to reseasonably secure our moblie phones if misplaced or stolen.

It would be used for buying things with your phone using near field communication technology. Effectively turning your phone into your wallet.

no. it. isnt. It's just cheaply done. Good quality (read: expensive) biometrics don't have any of the flaws you have pointed out (except the whole chopping off fingers thing...but lets try and be reasonable here).

If apple put the current consumer biometric technology in their phones, then you would be right. But the point everyone is trying to make is that it's apple: they wouldnt.

There are perfectly secure biometric systems out there, they've just never been used in a consumer product before.

Actually, good biometrics wouldn't be fooled by a lopped off finger either. Why? Because they use sensors to measure the temperature of the finger to determine that it is within the normal human range. If someone cut off a finger to use, either they have to use it immediately (which means they are doing it right in front of the scanner -- why bother cutting it off, just make the person put it on the scanner) or they would have to peal the skin off can place it on something of the right core temp (such as their own finger) . . . or I guess microwave it, that would work, 23 seconds on high? :D
