My mum has a 17 Pro Max and it's already scratched to hell and hers is in a case.

Tbh I liked the SS design best, no case on my 12 Pro Max and my shiny rim still has no scratches... Though my screen is scratched to hell despite only ever living in my pocket, cause the whole "scratch resistant" marketing for them is BS.
Impossible, no way that in five days time (assuming that she got it on launch day) that a phone is in a case is "scratched to hell".

I'm struggle to believe this... The Blue phone can get minor scratches with a FINGERnail...
The coating is not very well done.

My Blue iPhone 12 that is made out of aluminum and glass, has been used without a case since 2020 and I have exactly 1 small scratch on it. But I have a friend that has the same Blue iPhone and it is scratched to death. There is a lesson in there somewhere...

The phones don’t scratch themselves. We do something that gives them scratches. Apple can make a phone as scratch resistant as they possibly can, and there will always be somebody who manages to scratch it. Get over it. If you put your phone in the same pocket with your keys, that is on you.

If people talks about scratches on their car when driving down the streets like how people talks about scratches on their phones, there will be no dirty cars on the street and all dump trucks will be impounded.

People do now wrap their entire cars in vinyl, so there’s that. A business that targets OCD behavior is quite profitable.

Returned the phone. I’m gonna wait for you all to first scratch yours and then try to sell it for less. A lot less. :p

I was in the store today. All the phones on displayed looked bad. All of them. 16’s too. They get beat up pretty bad with all the trolls handling them day in and day out.

Have you seen how dirty people's phones are? Ewww. Disinfect and Wipe your phone down, please. Thanks

FWIW I’m caseless since release day with iPhone 17 pm orange and no scratches. No case on iPhone 15 pm for two years and not a scratch. This isn’t an issue for me.

Apple not only switched from titanium to aluminum but they also dont use anodized aluminum coloring process anymore to make phones cheaper. Now sell those phones to cheap people. Im not buying.

Fingernail... I edited my post
Ah okay. So that’s not really a scratch on the surface of the iPhone. That’s what Apple’s calling “material transfer” where minute particles of your fingernail (or in this case, the soft metal of the stand) transfer to the surface of the iPhone in the form of a line.

It’s like chalk on a blackboard: Chalk is transferred to the blackboard giving the appearance a line. The board isn’t “scratched” (but the chalk is depleted).

Fair, but that doesn't happen in Titanium. Just saying

Nonsense. Just utter nonsense. They've tried all sorts of materials. Over many years. Aluminum is the best material for thermal performance while maintaining a light weight and strong structural frame.
Nonsense. Just utter nonsense. There is nothing new about the materials they are using (apart from slight tweaks in the alloys). It just comes down to the choices they make for their margins and product categorisation.

Aluminium was a good choice for thermal but more so because it is cheaper than titanium and allows them to place the Air in the premium category ahead of the fold next year (which will be in the same category). So high margins preserved on the Pro with a cheaper less robust material and product categorisation achieved.
The other choice was: keep titanium and design a very slightly larger vapor chamber and reduce the margins on the Pro.
