My mum has a 17 Pro Max and it's already scratched to hell and hers is in a case.

Tbh I liked the SS design best, no case on my 12 Pro Max and my shiny rim still has no scratches... Though my screen is scratched to hell despite only ever living in my pocket, cause the whole "scratch resistant" marketing for them is BS.

I will definitely be using a clear case. Edges of products with anodized aluminum are more susceptible to scratches like that of the anodized MacBook Air. Can definitely see Apple bringing the Ceramic shield 2 in future versions of the iPhone.

Apple's case doesn't protect against damage from a fall of about 2 feet. That aluminum is utter garbage.

Let me remind you, pro model costs like 2k on top spec, tell me it is cheap… but you know what is funny some models that cost like 500$ don’t have any of those issues… You paying friking 2k $ for the smartphone which will have like from day one scratches!!! Is it normal I think not, not for this price! And not for this company! Fffs
Fair enough, but these same discussions have been going on for years on this forum, back when iPhones were cheaper. In any case, I agree that if a device is defective right out of the box, that’s not acceptable. However, devices do wear with use, and I think sometimes consumers’ expectations about their durability are a bit exaggerated.

I find the "durability issues" with Apple devices amusing because the people who are most vocal about them are also the ones who replace their phones every year or two. Who cares? These devices are disposable, whether you like it or not. OS upgradability ends at year 5 or 6, and they will probably introduce a new feature "worth upgrading for" in 2-3 years.

Treat your iPhone like a hammer and not a unique piece of rare artwork. If you carry it around in your pocket without a case it actually develops a nice patina over time.
If you do that with 17Pro I'm pretty sure after 1-2 years that is gonna look like you dropped it from the rooftop and only replaced the screen. You will not want to be using that anymore regardless of performance or features. Probably gonna be tough sell in a used market too

By the way, if you really want to see for yourself how much Apple is BS’ing, go to an Apple Store and take an iPhone 16 on off one of the MagSafe cases. Then compare it to an iPhone 17 Pro. This is clearly a phone specific issue.
Agree completely. With the 16 now being in stores for over a year, there are no visible scratches on them. However that is definitely not the case with the 17 Pro/Air. Saw the unsightly scratches on day 1 within a few hours of store opening. Have to use a case to prevent scratches or other visible damages.

But this means anyone who puts their iPhone on a MagSafe stand like this one will receive scratches.

And lol at “material transfer”. I looked at these iPhones yesterday at a store, and tried to rub out the scratches on one phone. Nothing happened. They’re scratches. And I use an old MagSafe stand without a case. I never have any material transfer.

I just know for iPhone 18 they’ll bring Ceramic Shield 2 to the back glass and call it a “feature”.

I bought a cheap silicone case from amazon and took it with me when picking up my new 17 a few days ago and installed it immediately after unboxing the phone. Sure enough, I managed to drop the darn thing while doing the tranfering from old to new phone. (Sitting at a desk in the apple store). With my new cheap case I was OK, without the case, I would have had a new iphone with a dented corner.

It's very poor that Apple's own case doesn't protect against falls when their own product details states that it does, and undergoes thousands of hours of testing:
Designed by Apple, the TechWoven Case with MagSafe offers beautiful personalisation and protection for your iPhone 17 Pro....Like every Apple-designed case, it undergoes thousands of hours of testing throughout the design and manufacturing process. So not only does it look great, it’s built to protect your iPhone from scratches and drops.

Glad to hear that nothing has happened to your new iPhone. Waiting for mine to be delivered. Will surely put it in a clear case as soon as I receive it. Will be very disheartening if anything happens to the new phone.

Anodized titanium is much tougher than anodized aluminum. 7075-T7 aluminum is a lot tougher anodized than whatever cheap aluminum Apple used here.

I miss the titanium, but that would’ve been one heavy sumbish PM17.
