The AW is not really a good fitness tracker in my view anyway, so why not just go with one of the more established fitness offerings?
I already have a Fitbit so the fitness as bad as it is would just be a bonus. The biggest thing I want from it is the water resistance which Fitbit doesn't give me as I'm a teacher and in the Summer we do a LOT of water days and I don't want to take my Fitbit off each time we decide to do something with water. Plus I love the bands and watch faces.

So my Fitbit Charge and AW would be the perfect combo.

If they already have an iPhone, why won't they upgrade to a newer one?

If my wife or I get a new 6-something in a few months to replace our 5S and 5C, and yourDad still hasn't upgraded, want to buy one of ours for cheap?

You are missing the point entirely...

No, people want to just tell you you didn't do your homework, which makes no sense to me. I get defending Apple, bc I do frequently, but why in this case? Because you want them to buy a new phone? That's like telling the op to buy a new house because a car he likes won't fit in the garage. While it makes sense that you would logically have to buy a new house to keep it covered, why not keep it outside- because you'll probably eventually buy the house for the benefit. In this case, he doesn't have the option to keep outside. But he really wants to. And would buy the car. Although, I do see the reason why posting about it cant really solve the problem. And why some get frustrated with these posts. Just leave the thread bc your watch works fine with your phone- you have no desire for iPad support.
[doublepost=1456599626][/doublepost]If he wants it for activity tracking, don't you think that that would most likely be at home? Bc he wants him more active? It's easy to jump to the conclusion that carrying around an iPad everywhere isn't optimal, but at work and home my iPad is connected to wifi. It would Bluetooth in my car on the way. I work 8am-10pm, Tuesday-Sunday. And it's an iPad pro- so it seems like that system would work fine for me. I, however, have no interest in this bc my phones with me 100% of the time. Be open minded

I am assuming you are having imaginary conversation with Tim, because i read it couple times, the only person want anyone to buy a iPhone for every AW has to be Tim. Everyone else simply point out what is needed, today not tomorrow or in the dream, in order to use a AW, and use it as what it is intended to, by Tim.
Email Tim, express your frustration, and no one is leaving any thread. :)

Added: By the way, title should be "Apple blew it, they only has 75% of smart watch market".

I was looking to get an Apple Watch for my elderly dad to monitor his stats. After his recent operation he has been less active and wanted something to track his activity and hopefully encourage him to move.

When I looked into their iPad for the Apple Watch app, you guessed it, it’s not there.

It only exists on the iPhone, and the iPhone they do have does not support iOS 8!

So why not just get a used iPhone 5C on Swappa for about $150, or a brand new iPhone 5S when they drop the price in a few weeks? An iPhone that doesn't support iOS 8 is getting up there.

At that time I was focused on a solution on monitoring my father, not getting a new iPhone (and convince my parents it will be very similar to old iPhone).

Old people can be very irrational and stubborn.

Ironically they are used to wearing watches, so an AW is perfectly acceptable.

Promise them that when they get a new iPhone, they can set up the home screen so it's just like the one they have now.

I've heard of people taking it further with their parents' phones and putting all the extra non-phone-ish apps (like Music, Wallet, iBooks, Stocks, etc) in a folder or a second screen. If they can only see the functions they want to use, they won't get dazzled by all the extras.

You also gotta remember that the AW will stop supporting older phones sooner or later. So if the parents don't want a new iPhone I doubt they'll want to upgrade to a new phone to keep using the newest features of the watch if Apple improves some of the health features.

Getting an iphone 5 isn't that smart as I don't see it supporting the newest WatchOS in a year or 2.

mild aged people as well.

In cases like this, it would help if a thread's OP put their edit on the very first line of the starting post.

You know, like how it's nearly standard practice on For Sale posts.

Just saying.

I doubt that it was edited, but I am curious for the OP to comment. That statement was there on the same day as the original post. And, the post would not have made much sense without that comment originally.

There was another edit in the post, and that is cleanly identified.

If it was edited, it was within the first day. I have been following this thread since it started, and I remember the comment from the first time I read it. Plus, you are the 2nd or 3rd person to make a similar comment and get the same response.

Guess I missed it. I was just trying to be helpful with my initial comment and my subsequent response was supposed to come of much more playful than accusatory.

Anyway, good for the OP. He found a product that works for him. I agree on many points. Apple hasn't yet created a product that meets my needs and wants (yet) either.
