Wow, this is interesting. For once I actually think Facebook have a point here - after all, Apple is showing the 'nutritional values' for apps in iOS 14 to be more transparent, so why can't developers show users what they're giving away to Apple?

And the idea that this information is 'irrelevant' is clutching at straws. It's very relevant, not specifically to Facebook but to smaller companies.

The case against Apple's App Store Monopoly is getting stronger and stronger, thanks to Apple.

Seriously? "irrelevant" information? This is extremely relevant information especially when it comes to money.

Sellers will obviously wonder why they're getting 30% less and will assume Facebook took it. All these little things adds up to a pretty compelling case against Apple's App Monopoly.

Apple users cheered when Apple introduced more transparency to Facebook's tracking information in iOS 14 and for good reasons. But isn't Facebook doing the same thing here? Being transparent!
No, it’s not doing the same thing. Facebook is joining a campaign to harm apple.

It’s obvious that apple is not hiding irrelevant information, and are blocking the update because it paints apple in a bad light. As obvious as the fact that facebook has no concern at all for transparency.

If facebook is suddenly concerned about privacy can start by showing its customers why facebook is “free” yet still makes TONS of money.

I am no fan of Facebook whatsoever but this just shows yet again that Apple is tacking advantage of their power like ... I get charging for it but at least do not hide it? Transparency should be key and also Apps should be allowed to communicate other ways to pay (such as via website on your browser). Apple is just protecting its money, disguised as "all for the customers!"

For example, a small business should be able to communicate that they have to charge more via the App Store to make up for the money they "loose" by paying Apple their share (and for the business to survive!) compared to buying it directly with the company, e. g. via their website. Lets say I am a small business and would like to offer something for 5 Euro but I need that marging to survive, however if I also sell it via apple, which takes 30 %, so obviously I cannot charge the same unless I also raise the price on my own offer which is just a rip off towards the customers. Charging more elsewhere, just to please apple because they do not like to appear more expensive?

In fact, I wish it was law! At least in the EU it should show

(Net value) Item price
Apple 30 %
Tax

on the invoice. How does Apple handle the tax anyway? Does the developer have to pay 19 % tax even though Apple takes 30 % of it or are they taxed individually?

I'm a 40+ year Apple fanboy, and I detest Facebook.

In this case, Apple are wrong, and Facebook have it right.

As a consumer, I appreciate knowing information about where my money is going when I spend it. So if I was going to spend £100 on a takeaway order from a local restaurant, knowing that £30 of this would go directly to Apple would be useful information - and it would actually make me more likely to phone the restaurant and pay them directly.

For Apple to ban Facebook from providing this information, based on the claim that it is "irrelevant", is laughable.

The truth is simply that Apple are trying to protect their revenue stream, using their might and monopoly to bully and get their way.

Yeah, squeeze that Apple

(EU)
Apple is the seller, they (should)pay taxes.

Example, I buy groceries, the retailer has to pay the tax to the government, pretty sure Apple can't pass on the Tax.

Perhaps apple will add something to safari that tells people when facebook and google have sold your information to other companies to serve ads etc. Facebook is genuinely responsible for horrendous irreparable damage to society and they have the nerve to call other companies out.

This is what I find fundamentally scummy about what all these companies are doing. I don't agree with a lot of what Apple does but Facebook don't have a leg to stand on when it comes to anything. Epic are fine with predatory targeting of children when it comes to their in-game purchases but apple taking 30% of their revenue, oh no thats bad.

Don’t know why people are defending apple. Apple NEED to be taken down a peg. Their attitude recently has gone mental.
Taking 30% for this is too much especially in this climate and from a $2,000,000,000,000 company. Note that this isn’t going into facebooks pockets. And I hate Facebook.

That’s actually a good idea, but not just for the apple cut on an app store that seems to be more or less standard. Apply it to everything you buy, we may be surprised with how little of what we pay get the people actually producing things,

It seems that Apple is going to have to adjust their 30% take from all Apps. There is just too much noise surrounding it now and it would probably be a wise move to lower it slightly just to make this constant bad press go away.

I'm sure Apple love trolling FB. Even so, the rules are pretty clear. If people wanted to help the small economy so much they could use a web browser or heaven forbid and actual computer to make the purchases. Not everything has to be done via an app.

ah. The rules are pretty clear. And every user has to know them? How exactly? Because, apparently you're not allowed to tell them.

See now I’m conflicted.

On one hand, Facebook built its business on selling your data with virtually zero transparency. Also, I think they are a dirty company.

On the other, Apple’s rationale here just seems a little lame and 1984ish. It just rings of them not wanting that information shared.

You’re killing me, Smalls.

Envy is a bad quality. Apple has made it easy for us users. There's only one store, you don't have to search long in different stores, and the developers just have to create convincing programming to keep fed themself.
This is how the world works.
Where do you have a problem with it?

The 30% discussion has long since passed. At that time people had understood that the old ways of distribution (physical newspapers, Amazon stuff etc) work the same way, with partly similar profit margins.

Anyone who pours oil on the fire will not be surprised that South Korea, for example, is now also becoming restless. And: Which country will profit most from this? China, as it can pursue a completely different pricing policy. So I would advise: Never change a running Apple system. 30% work and have created a solid platform.

The real problem is probably that there are simply hardly any new really good apps. I've been following the app market since its birth. Back then it was still very exciting.

It's beginning to look like Apple vs other tech companies.

Everyone loves to hate on Apple. Has always been the way even on here.

As far as any big tech is concerned if they can nudge and in turn get a free ride from it. They’ll nudge. It’s like office politics just companies not people.
