Not really, just been a while. Snow leopard was named the way it was because it was literally an entire release dedicated to bug fixes and stability improvements from leopard (and yes, its rollout was rough, but it became a massive improvement over leopard after those gm release issues were ironed out)

They need to do that again, not just a temp freeze but an entire release cycle where feature work is deprioritized and focus is on stability and bugs

Snow Leopard was loaded with new features. OpenCL, Grand Central Dispatch, these were not 'tiny things' but major core upgrades.

I know they can’t just stop releasing new OSes but I would be totally fine with a Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion style release for everything next year. Call it Mac OS “Apple Park” because you’re gonna park your ass in your chair and make all this stuff run perfectly instead of going ok goofy ass trips

Reminds me of an episode of breaking bad...

You know if there is a bug flying around... you have to get it before doing anything else. It could affect purity of the final product.

A product Tim is making for the benefit of his family. Thats the sole reason for this operation, to ensure he leaves something behind for his family. Does this process, do you understand the sacrifice?

I got a laugh out of the BB comparison and I know you're having a laugh.

But just to be accurate, Tim has said he plans to give all his money away to charity.

In reality we should be on iOS 12.14.7 by now if they held off all these beta releases they called a new iOS.

Could you imagine working everyday just to fix bugs?
Hahah I’m not a programmer but I would imagine cleaning up bad code, especially other people’s bad code, doesn’t sound as fun as creating brand new code/features. Probably why bugs take so long to squash.

I've had some crazy crashes, hangs, and debilitating bugs on the latest iOS and macOS versions that are unlike anything I've ever seen from Apple before.

Most recently my iPhone froze completely and would not even register a hard reset via the power + volume button trick. I've never had that happen to me before. I had to wait around 4 minutes before the phone somehow rebooted itself.

Meanwhile ever since macOS 14 my Mac will crash DAILY and a bunch of settings reset along with the crash. This one is getting in the way of my work. Infuriating.

what phone? Want to know if I should be on the 👀

I'll belive it when I see it.....

I'm all out of faith, this is how I feel
I'm cold and I am shamed
Threw my iPhone on the floor
Illusion never changed
Into something real
I'm wide awake and I can see that macOS is torn
You're a little late
I'm already torn

One week pause, such courage. There's no need for annual updates to everything.
It became an expectation. It wasn't always like this. Id much rather have something released when ready.

To be honest, for an OS that that don't sell separately.. there isn't any real need for this. The version numbers don't mean much except for more significant changes and additions.

Id rather they just call it iOS, Mac OS... and have the version in the small print.

Microsoft kind of tried to do this with Windows 10. They said it was the last 'version'... and I could tell exactly why they wanted to do this. You never see versions of windows for sale in shops and most people get it with the PC. I wish they had just said, its Windows... and it does have a version but its in the small print and meaningless to regular consumers.

Releasing an OS that just works and gets out the way, or enables your work, is what most people want.

2 year software cycles, please.
They will just squeeze in more features. What they need to do is adopt the Android model where they can release components independently. This way when something is ready thhey can release it. Many bug fixes can be released without waiting for the entire OS package to stabilize.

Introducing: MacOS Apple Park - no new features, no distractions, no bugs - it just works. BRILLIANT!

Sonoma works great at my device. No probs @ all. Maybe that M's are the problem related.

FYI to those unaware, the next time software from any company has zero bugs will be the first time in history a software release has zero bugs.

They already do that - see how many features are announced at WWDC but released across the entire year. The issue is secrecy first, release major updates at once, and letting PR dictate schedules.

Honestly - everybody could stay with they'r last year OS-Versions. Smartest way would be to act like Linux. New version every few years plus support for years. That way everybody can choose what he wants.

Wasn't iOS 17 billed as the "SL Release" we all wanted, all while still adding in a bunch of features?
Really? I haven’t noticed that. Funnily enough, iOS 17 was the least earful release for me personally in a while while it was horrible for others. Anyway, I heard early on it was very unstable and buggy so I don’t know where the Snow Leopard thing came from although I was hoping for the same.

Aww. I am a programmer and I love fixing bugs! There's something so satisfying about tracking down a bug (and its friends) and making the kill. Making a product more reliable feels amazing. I also like optimizing. I suppose it's like skydiving. Some people love the feeling, some people wet themselves. (I'm among the latter...)

New features? Not my thing. Luckily it's everybody else's thing. :p
