"Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook earlier this week at a Goldman Sachs conference that Apple has looked at large companies for acquisitions, but that none have been the right fit. Consequently, Apple has restricted itself to purchasing smaller companies, such as Quattro Wireless and Lala Media, primarily for their technology and talent."

Sounds a little like the Borg. Maybe resistance is futile.

Sony would be a smart buy. Sony is trying to catch up with the packaging. Sony has had argument's with Microsoft. SONY SONY SONY SONY!!!

Sony is a dinosaur. They lost their way years ago. The only Sony product I consider worth buying is the PS3 (which I own).

I seriously doubt Apple wants to own a mediocre conglomerate manufacturer of clock radios and cameras (among 10,000 other things).

There was a lot of talk, what, yesterday or something about the camera-in-an-iPad thing. Of course Apple could put a camera in the iPad. Obviously. [...] I think what's kept the camera out of the iPad is really simple: The user experience would suck.

It's hard enough to make yourself look like you want to look with a tiny camera behind a fish-eye lens, like the build-in camera on a Macbook Pro. Imagine trying to do that with an iPad. You'd have to either put it on a stand of some kind and arrange yourself awkwardly so the camera isn't pointing at a spot two inches above your head, or you'd have to hold it outstretched at a right angle to your face for the duration of the conversation.

I think Jobs (or Apple as a whole, maybe) decided that because it wasn't worth doing well, a camera in the iPad simply wasn't worth doing yet.

Actually, I agree completely. I posted almost exactly the same points a few days ago in another thread speculating about the front-facing camera, but the guys there laughed me off. It's pretty obvious that Apple DID experiment with the camera -- the circuitry and the case are both prepared to accept the camera module, and the software evidently supports it. So why not connect the dots? Because clearly someone decided it was better not to have it, and I think that's what separates Apple from every other tech company out there. Everyone else would have put the camera in, so they'd have one more bullet point on the sales sheet. Never mind that the user experience would be crappy. It takes guts for someone to say to the customer, "no, trust me, you really don't want this." Not every customer appreciates that, either, at least not initially.

While it might be overpriced, perhaps Apple should consider acquiring Imagination Technologies. They already have invested in the UK company, but they would probably want to spin off the PURE Digital radio division.

I don't know how plausible this is, but it's certainly more in Apple's actual interests than acquiring a dumb pipe like AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile. Adobe and AMD make zero sense whatsoever.

At this point, releasing new computers would be considered a big bold move.

Agreed. No more toys, need better computers.

Does anyone even buy the Apple TV? I've always thought that was the result of some bet Jobs made while drunk or high (probably high). It's kind of the red headed step child of the Apple family

I guess that would make the MacPros the child that Apple sends off to some expensive boarding school - only to be seen once every 14 months or so. ;)

I love mine. It's more useful then the iPad.

Think about all the thing's they would gain...

Sony is a stable company, like you said they do make lot's of thing's, BLURAY FOR MAC!!!! Sony Display's... Think about it there computer's could be all made with there part's instead of a Matisha DVD drive and LG display???

Sony also is a somewhat midrange to upper end Computer it would fit in AMAZINGLY!!! Sony also has a good customer service and make's some fairly good Quality Product's...They have a pretty good track record.

You can not say Sony is not a Smart Buy. Think of all the rumor's you heard about the gaming system's and all that. Sony has experience with that. They battle with Microsoft. PS3 vs. Xbox 360 is just as big as Mac vs. PC

i sincerely think sony is bigger than apple, and apple could not buy it (probably it would be easier the opposite!)
plus for what i know japanese law make sure no foreign company can buy japanese companies...
so

Starbucks + Apple users: how original. You're running out of material.

No, every trip to Starbucks (rare as they are, since Peet's is
around) brings fresh material...especially when the posers have Iphone
cases with cutouts so that the Apple logo is still visible.

I wonder how many people who list their Apple kit in their sigs
spend time at Starbucks? I would bet that there's a strong
correlation.

Considering the rash of recent complaints about hardware/software problems (27" Imac,
yellowing, blinking, memory leaks, WiFi issues, graphics glitches...), it might be
a "Big, Bold" move to invest in quality assurance at the same time. Bring back
"it just works".

Ha! I'm sure you're kidding as am I but that would be iMazing :p......perhaps even syncing/docking one's iPhone to said iCar would launch a multitude of functionalities within the car as well as starting the car itself. What if it had Airport technology built-in? Sales folks could effectively close deals from the road in their new mobile office on macbook pros or iPads that utilize cloud-based applications. Come to think of it, an iCar would nicely round-out their product line as a "mobile devices company". Now that would be "big and bold" :D

The only drawback would be that you couldn't drive the icar while talking on your iPhone. That would require multitasking. ;)

Someone suggested that in the conference call and steve jobs laughed at him

Yeah, well, he has laughed at other things. Or downright denied them...

Like...

CELLPHONES!

(I'm sure there are other examples :) )

I would keep an eye out for Apple to make a move on purchasing the ABC television network from Disney.

To those who said Apple will buy Microsoft, I hope you're joking. Microsoft has a market cap of $250 billion.

when did he laugh at cellphones?

and why would he want to buy a failing car company that won't even have any cars to sell in 2011?

Maybe they will spend it to get Steve Jobs elected President and effectively just buy the whole country.

I'd guess they would buy a media company.
Like CBS ($9B) or Time Warner ($33B), and that way ensure themselves of ample content.

No stronger a correlation than to suggest that those who flaunt their sexuality in their sigs likely speak with a lisp - but that would be unfairly discriminatory, wouldn't it?

With the current economical crises, i am sure that apples investors would like some

cashflow, moight also do the economy good.

No, that would be stereotyping.

Denying a class of citizens basic civil rights because of their
sexual expression is unfair discrimination.

dividends

When a tech company starts paying dividends, that's a sign to me that they have run out of R&D ideas. I don't see that happening at Apple any time soon.

I think a iPad webcam would work just the same as it does in a laptop if the iPad was plugged into the keyboard dock. A videoconference with the iPad in hand, however, would require a very steady hand, and some good image stabilization software. The videos I take with my digital camera make it seem like I'm living through earthquakes all the time!
