The comic books/graphic novels catagory has to be the most interesting part of this story. This is the first I've heard of comic books being supported in the ibooks app, as opposed to using a seperate app for them. I think buying comic books directly from the ibooks app is a great idea, and hope they look great on it, although I'm unsure if the epub format can display high resolution, full color images.

Epub supports high res color images just fine. I've done tests with comic book images using svg also and they look awesome. Sure would like to know how independent publishers can get going on producing these epubs (ie: for comics; what's the best size for the raster images, etc.)! How do I get my books in the iBookStore?! Apple! Answer me!

I assume "iPad Compatible" means it runs in the iPhone app simulator mode that pixel doubles. Anyone know how many universal apps will be available for iPad? Stand alone?

In-app purchasing to unlock the iPad component of universal apps would be a smart, elegant approach for devs wanting to get paid for the iPad upgraded content.

I don't think that's true...

I'd be fine with all Apps having to be re-written for the iPad, that way at least there wouldn't be over 100k Apps immediately available. Some of the Apps are a bit much.

Apple really needs to solve the area of multiple Apps for essentially the same thing. The are companies that put out dozens upon dozens of Apps like travel guides or books where one App with added data would suffice instead of one App per data set. But currently there is no way to buy an App and then buy additional content for the App.

The app for GQ now has a bookshelf feature added to it, where all new copies of the in app purchases are kept. This has resulted in the elimination of badges for specific issues of GQ on the homescreens to differentiate months.

If this can happen on the iPhone today, I don't see why it can't be ported to the iPad, or used by other developers to eliminate or at least eliminate the issue you describe.

I hope Apple adds "pinch to zoom" for images in iBooks. Most book graphics should be at least 300dpi for print - which is much higher than the iPad's display. Being able to see and enjoy that detail, especially for comic books or other technical imagery, is essential.

There might be. But I know one reason there are over 100k in Apps is because each book/travel guide/learn a language App, stuff like that is a separate App. And it is ridiculous that it isn't a single App with a library to choose from.

I agree. If Apple removes those apps which are just the books from the app store & asks them to go through iBooks, that would make things a lot easier/simpler.

they didn't ban them. they removed them and now will have an appropriate section in which they can be found. same will be for the erotic books.

Really? I hadn't heard that. I heard that the sexually explicit apps were removed, Apple then made categories for explicit content, but removed that too. I haven't heard that any sexual apps had been allowed back in.

Appropriate section: Underlit corner populated by a few old guys with their jacket collars pulled up and cigarette butts littering the floor.

Incorrect. Developers are able to offer in-app purchases. For example, Tap Tap Revenge is a free app, but the developers make money because the users make in-app purchases of new songs to use in the game. This system has been in place for a while now.

Yeah, and after banning bikini apps from the iPhone. So erotic text is okay, but not pictures? What message is Apple trying to send?

The same one that our society has sent for years. Children are restricted from purchasing pornography, but there is no such restriction on erotic literature.

are there any 3rd party apps out now for the iphone for comic book buy and reading? ones with like marvel and DC

They're not sending a message at all - they're responding to customer complaints. Evidently they don't think they will have the same complaints with erotic lit. If that proves wrong, bet your bottom dollar that will go too. This is a matter of bowing to customer pressure, not taking a principled stand.

Also - I second the question about iBooks for iPod touch/iPhone. Surely they want the 50 million existing users to be able to buy stuff too?

I believe apple should remove all those apps for which there is multiple apps used pointlessly. They could force developers to create a single app with in app purchases for each seperate book/map/etc. If they don't, app gets removed. If they do, users app purchases will be migrated to the new in app respective purchases on appleserver and they'll be prompted to download the in one app when they use the app store or iTunes.

And everyones much happier :)

Slightly Off Topic

this is a bit off topic, but i hope with the iWork Applications, the saved files can be transferred to an iMac through iTunes and be printed off... and.... Apple please do something with the damn App Store... add a wishlist/favourites/to buy feature because i keep forgetting what i want to get and waaaay off topic but please make the fullscreen iTunes Cover Flow the same as the iPhone/iPod Touch

These developers are both lazy and stupid. If I really like them and their guides, for example, I'm much more likely to purchase an additional guide from them within my already-installed app. If they send me to the app store to find new content, I might just find their competitors content instead.

Apple really should crack down on these intensely. People will cry censorship, etc, but developers and users will be much happier.

I agree they seriously need to create some stringent rules on cookie cutter apps that just regurgitate the same content with slight differences. There is no need for anyone to do it any longer so they need to start cracking down and clean up the App Store further.

As to you developers doing it, knock it off.

Some of the apps don't work fully on the iPad because it doesn't have GPS, or a camera?

You mean just like my iPod touch then! :p

Aswell I have to plug a headset with mic in if I want a recording app or something that uses a mic like a guitar tuner app, or that ocarina thing. That's never ruined the whole app experience for me, there's plenty I can do still. The iPad will have a lot more once the developers get going! The iPhone apps working on the iPad is only really a sideline 'til it really kicks off and there's thousands of native iPad ones.

Ordering iPad Online???

Greetings!

I am planning on ordering the iPad from the Apple Online Store. Does anybody know if the order process for the iPad will be initiated at 12:01 am (right after midnight) EST? I called Apple and the rep said they didn't have that info! Go figure. I'm thinking 12:01 am is technically Friday, March 12th, right?!! Stayin' up late tonight! :)

<SARCASM ON>May be because kids now a days don't know how to read<SARCASM OFF>. Seriously what would they do with such literature with pictures in it!

When the iPhone's specs got announced, I went and bought a T-Mobile Wing (wish I still had it instead of this sucktastic env2); and after I had a look at the iPad, I went and bought an Acer netbook.
I guess Apple will have to cope.
