How will ads decrease the cost of wireless plans? And how many people are actually going to click an ad anyways, they're so annoying? I tend to ignore all ads as it is now.

People do their best to avoid watching adverts on TV, so I'm not sure how this will work for mobile devices. Full screen / screen dominating adverts will be a turn off.

I hope Google sues the **** out of Apple.

In addition to:

No Youtube app on iPhone.
No Google Maps.
Crippled search results via iPhone/Google search.
Support Nokia in its lawsuit over Apple stealing patents.

That'll teach Jobsy.

My take is Apple does not like the fact developers are still making money off applications that are free. Apple gets no cut of an application sold for $0 in iTunes yet developers are raking in some revenue via ad placement. Plus to piss off Steve Jobs worse many ads in applications are served by Google, so Google is making a cut off an application given away free in the iTunes store but Apple gets nothing.

To rectify that situation, considering Apple's need to control everything and squeeze every penny from each Apple user, I can totally see Apple doing the following:

-All ads in applications from third parties such as Google are banned.
-In order to place ads in an application, you must use Apple's "Revolutionary Ad Placement and Targeting Experience". The updated SDK will make this "a breeze for developers to implement"
-Apple will take 30% of revenues earned via mobile advertising, and you get 70%. Somebody has to pay for the servers throwing up ads after all.

It will be a market place where advertisers buy space in Apple's world and Apple throws up the ads in an intelligent way. It will be in direct competition with and work very similar to Google's advertising method.

I think you've nailed it on the head there!

Cheap labour makes Macs so cheap!

People are complaining about the cost of their phone plans. These advert options will reduce those costs to the consumer while keeping the Telcos in the black.

Of course, telecom companies and Apple are legendary in their willingness to spread any cost-benefit to their customers. Your iPhone plan must have got cheaper, just as Apple is now selling its computers in line with other computers made in China by exploited work force.

Sounds like you will still pay full price for your plan AND have to endure commercials.

If this gets too much, people will simply go back no basic cell phones. It's a basic instinct of the modern man to avoid any type of blunt advertising, especially if it's intrusive.

Or other smartphones.. either way, Apple lose marketshare, if this should occur.

Well this sucks. I refused to update the apps I paid for that gained ads. I see about 20 ads just walking to class, I don't need more while I'm trying to not fall asleep in class by playing Paper Toss.

I hate ads so much. If I want to buy something I'll look it up myself on google so the ad company doesn't get their share of pay per click

I hear ya!

I don't get all those that look forward to this. How Ironic!

Let's see, they buy/pay for the iPhone, then their AT&T data plan, then sacrifice their Bandwidth, all in the name of looking forward to getting sanctioned spam on their iPhone!

It's insane! :D;)

The point is that ads are already here, and they are terrible, but they aren't going anywhere. Since they aren't going anywhere, they might as well be better.

Makes me happy not to have an Apple Iphone OS device....

Ads do suck, but quality content is not free. You can’t have it both ways. If the ads work well, don’t crash, and are done in a way that doesn’t unnecessarily annoy the user, then that’s a step up from today!

And as a developer who plans to release an iPhone game or two one day, and will need to pay rent, free apps with ads are a model I have to consider. If Apple makes that easier for me to deal with, I’ll hardly complain :)

Anyone who is assuming Apple intends to do this to make the user experience worse is making a very unlikely assumption.

Hey Steve.. I know you're reading this

Maybe you should spend a little less time making advertising for penis pumps more efficient inside the apps that we use, and a little more time on actually improving the operating system and the iPhone.

like for example a decent lockscreen calender perhaps...

Just an idea?

No no NO! The reason why "mobile adds suck" is because they actually exist. Who wants to watch mobile advertising? Banner adds are bit annoying but something taking over full screen is just plain torture. I want Apple to protect me from annoying advertising and not feeding it to me.

Just what we need, yet more advertising, and this time it eats into our cell phone 3G usage limits. It's expensive enough to have an iPhone and use it for what you want without getting stuck with more advertising.

Better means more efficient. Trust me. I'm advertising whore making crap filling TV screens by day and hating it as a consumer by night. From my consumer perspective I wouldn't want to have mobile advertising. Regarding the content; its up to the brand and advertising agency to design it and Apple has nothing to say about that apart from obvious such as conflicting material with the media image which is standard. They are just providing the media aka in this case iPhone. Hence, better meaning more efficient... from consumer standpoint -> not nice. Location aware advertising is all about that, nothing more.

Im so glad i got out of the iphone game. News like this makes me not want to go back at any point until the chasing of money stops with these companies!
