Places like Amazon now offer last weeks base 15" MBP for $200 under list - and no tax in most states. I picked up my 2010 15" MBP on Black Friday at Amazon and if they have a big sale like last year I may pick up the 'new' base 2011 model and sell my 2010. Yeah, I lose some money but I also get a 1 year warranty, 2x bigger graphics CPU and a quad core for my photoshop work, plus I still haven't moved over to Lion so maybe I will update. Aside from Photoshop and Aperture work the performance difference would not be realized.

Oh we have been talking about ditching the optical drive, adding discrete graphics, and a "mSATA" SSD in addition to the mechanical disk for ages now.

The 13" MacBook Pro also needs a resolution bump to 1440 x 900 like its Macbook Air sibling. I would like to get a 13" model but the display and graphics solutions are lackluster for me. Also, my experience with Apple's Windows driver support has been nothing but miserable. I might as well save my money at that point.

Well that is what i have done with the current design (i use a 2009 one since i have absolutely no need for CPU or GPU power). The only things i need are battery life, ability to put as much ram as possible in, and screen real estate. I also need storage, but i want an ssd. I have been able to cheaply get that with the current desing. ($18 for the optical bay converter and $12 for the external DVD casing). I hope i will be able to get that bigger resolution with the next refresh, but i hope i won't lose any of the current stuff that's important to me.

Can someone explain to me what the advantage is of the 2.5GB quad core i7 processor which is available as a £200 extra compared to the 2.4GB quad core i7 processor that comes as standard on the top end 15' model?

You want the fastest possible processor because both…
1) You can afford it;
2) You need the additional speed.

Otherwise it's not really worth it… (though this is my opinion only and I have the upgrade 2.3GHz model only because it was the only choice at the Apple Store to get the antiglare display).

Intel charges about $190 more for the 2.5GHz option (and the 2.3 option previously) compared to the next processor down (the 2.4GHz option in this case), so Apple would need to charge at least that and still make a few on top (not to mention account for inflations, discounts offered to educational institutions, etc.) hence the $250 extra charge.

why it's not tagging "New"

as title, why it's not tagging New on Macbook Pro in the website?

1. No one needs 8GB unless they are Photoshopping/Video Editing etc..
2. Yes, an SSD for at least the OS could be nice. Maybe in the next model.
3. What wrong with the bluetooth?
4. They have some of the best notebook Displays on the market.

1. Noone should be buying a "pro" laptop if they're not doing photshopping or video editing
2. SSD pricing is still prohobitive but Apple SSD pricing is just ridiculous
3. Newer standards not a big deal
4. The Macbook pro screen is incredibly antiquated now. 1440x900 is a resolution that has gone far far into the past for a screen size which now is 1080p standard.

This is just a quick hardware refresh, the next macbook pro should be a beast.

I completely agree with you too, I've been annoyed at all their almost 'propriatery' ports on all their Macs. They're too busy trying to set a standard that isn't setting! The fact you don't even get the adapters when you buy a Mac makes me angry - I'm paying a premium for this computer anyway, why do I have to buy MORE to make it work?

Apple need to step up their game a little with the Macs. People who've been using them for a while are somewhat bored and unexcited for the Mac world, but all the newcomers love them, and their selling like hotcakes - so I guess why would Apple change it? Especially now steves not around to push innovation (although to be fair we haven't seen what Tim Cook can do yet..) :p

You take the biscuit sir

I still can't believe my specs from 2007 are 2Ghz core 2 duo, 4GB RAM

Four years later, nearly 5

Look what we have now :L Definitely not 4 years of work apple! :(

Give over man. You really don't know what you are talking about. I have the same Macbook Pro that you profess to owning, albeit 15' and my 2011 MBA (never mind this MBP update) kills it on speed. If you want spec alone, why don't you go and buy an HP or a Dell.

Trim tab

Right, but it would be nice if they supported the TRIM standard without doing the ID check to see if you bought the SSD from Apple.

So OWC SSD 6G Extreme drives wont be Trim enabled? Apparently there is some 3rd party app that will turn Trim on but is unsupported by Apple of course.

...I'll hang on for the bigger 2012 refresh. :)

Good idea, if you don't need to buy now.

The next generation MacBook Pro will be great. Could be an equally large step (also design-wise) as from the old to the new MBA.

Now that the conventional hard drive factories in Thailand are going to be flooded - this increases the push to replace spinning hard drives with SSDs. (Except when those factories are in Thailand, too, and, equally under water, operated by poorly trained fish ;) )

Don't worry about TRIM support. Most SSDs (and Sandforce-based ones like the OWC ones especially) have aggressive hardware-level garbage collection that all but eliminates the need for TRIM.

A little advice.. Im an indie iphone app devloper (sometimes 3d programming) and i use photoshop for my designing and what not..

I would like the 13inch as its ideal for portability and i can plug it to my bigger monitor when need be. Should i settle for the 2.4ghz i5 or the 2.8ghz i7? I will be upgrading to 8gb and ssd on my own in the future. Apple hardware is just painfully expensive.

Wrong. You need 8 gb to play Starcraft 2 on a Mac without stuttering. This issue has been confirmed by fellow users. What about people who do music production also?

So it's not just Photoshopping or Video Editing.
