so let me get this straight. there are actually people out there who think that they can sell a used computer to a company, have that company refurbish and test the computer, then remarked it somewhere and give you retail value. LOL. this makes no sense folks.

Many people (I can only imagine why hem, hem, better value) actually sell their used equipment to someone else directly to get the best value. Here is an example that anyone can understand, you sell a used car to a dealer who has to refurbish the car, warrant the car, sell the car to make a profit, and give you full retail value? so funny, I can't stop laughing
The problem is that the prices are insultingly low, they should just say: Want to get rid of your old MacBook? We recycle it for you for free. Or give market competitive prices.

While I could likely beat the $795 they offered me for my M1 14" MBP Pro, that's hardly the same as recycling it for free.

I ended up not doing it, since the M2 isn't worth a $1,000+ upgrade cost IMO but $795 isn't the same as nothing.

At least you have trade-in options in your countries, for me, it's only a second-hand market if I want to.
Some resellers have like buy-back program, but it's even funnier...

This isn't right unless you chose that it is damaged in some way. They are giving $270 for the M1 Mac mini. I tried it myself. Not saying $270 is a lot, but $90 is not accurate.
I'll try it again - I did not select damaged as it is in perfect condition...I will clarify I purchased a refurb 2020 m1... still shouldn't be just $90

It's so bad.... The only upside is that a) I'm definitely not upgrading my M1 MBP and 2) any Apple device I sell must be sold on Swappa.....
Shame on Apple...

Maybe it's just me but if I had spent $50k on a Mac Pro in 2019 I wouldn't be trying to trade it in just because they launched a new Macbook Pro. A machine that is as high spec'd as that one has either already earned its cost or is destined for a long service life. Until the software stops supporting it at least.
That's a lot of words to say, "you're trading it in wrong." ;)

Apple's trade-in values have never been reasonable IMO. Neither have the prices they charge for refurbished products.

From the article: "Apple is facing criticism online for offering poor Mac trade-in values following this week's launch of new MacBook Pro and Mac mini models."

Maybe that is poorly worded, but what was the trade-in value for that $50K Mac Pro BEFORE this week's launch of the new MacBook Pro and Mac Mini models? Was it just as bad?

I'm curious. What does the PC trade-in market look like? Is this really an "Apple is being greedy and ripping us off" thing or is it just a ****** thing that is systemic throughout the PC landscape?

Like how does this compare to a Dell trade in?
Do custom PC builders offer trade-in?

i thought you trade in your old device, not because you want to buy new device for half the price, but because device you trade in will be properly recycled and you're filthy rich, otherwise you sell your old gear on craigs list
Unfortunately, there are a lot of people with the 'entitlement' philosophy. They believe that just because they bought an expensive Apple toy, that entities them to a large trade-in value on a new Apple toy.

In my opinion, Apple should get rid of Phobio as Phobio does not run a respectable business.

I think we've become spoiled. I'm happy to get anything for my old Apple products as I replace them with newer, better models. Used to be we got nothing, or like someone else mentioned, selling on Craig's list, eBay, or the like and having to deal with scammers...I'd rather take less and let Apple give me whatever it wants. Better than nothing.

listen, I’ve always been adamant that trade-in prices for Apple are an absolute joke, but it’s hilarious that people are only calling this out en masse now that several long-awaited models are out. sell; don’t trade-in. especially if you have an Apple Silicon computer, you can get an INSANELY better price (a realistic one!). am I defending Apple? not in the slightest. it’s almost immoral to do this with products that are less than 2 years old and in perfect condition. do I think people should have wised up to this scam (@TheYayAreaLiving 🎗, love your comment btw) years ago? absolutely.

the Mac Pro tweet is a perfect example. you could easily resell that for the price of the highest-spec’d MBP, or the highest-spec’d mini ($6499/$4499 respectively [it’s pretty easy to assume someone with a Pro already has a display/keyboard/mouse]) and it would be an absolute steal for the buyer. alas…

Maybe it’s just a thing in this geographic area but the trade-in values here were always a bad joke and not worth it - unless you really didn’t care or didn’t want to bother with trying to sell privately.

I was going to buy an iPad Air 5 and wanted to trade-in my iPad Air 3 (not even 2 years old, no scratches or dents). I would have gotten just over €50 for it. Sold it privately in the end and got €300.

It's that crap company, Phobio, that they're working with. Not that that does anyone any good of course.

The name is already phobia-inducing.

Are they still using those incompetent fools? I had a months-long ordeal trading in my 11 Pro Max (the instant I got my 13 Pro of course, before they torpedoed the trade-in value).

They kept insisting it couldn’t be activated, and as proof kept sending me a picture of them trying to activate it over cellular. The phone had no cell signal, but full wifi. The screen they sent me as proof had a message saying ”cellular activation failed,” and a big blue “try with wifi” button.

I eventually, over many phone calls with Apple support, got them to force through the trade-in value because no one at Apple could explain wtf, and tier one just went with whatever that scammer told them.

Even if the trade-in values were reasonable I will never trust them again. Apparently if you do the trade-in at the Apple store, they just look at it to make sure it’s not smashed and that it turns on and you’re done.
