Apple Calls New Russian Smartphone Sales Legislation 'Equivalent to Jailbreaking'

This is the flaw in Tin’s strategy.

If you go along with the little requests, e.g. make Crimea part of Russia, you embolden them to make bigger and bigger requests. And at some point, you are an enabler of a human rights crisis. Just ask Google.

Cold war geopolitics has the roadmap. The answer is bright lines of what you will and will not do, and never, ever compromise. Any sign of ambiguity or weakness causes escalation.

Cold War Russia lost support from the people because of the food lines and people learning of standard of living—yes, blue jeans and color TVs--of western democracy’s.

It’s OK not to be able to sell your phones in every market. Find your business growth in the free world, like capitalists did for 50 years. The global economy did fine. Execs got very rich. Shareholders enjoyed the greatest stock market of all time. The losers were the regimes who feel behind in standare of living and tech.

Meanwhile, they bend to China's demand that allows people to be imprisoned or killed with little to no cause.

Too bad Russia doesn't build any of their stuff, then they'd follow the money and just comply and then defend the decision to comply!

Apple is lost.

It’s a giant illogical leap between Apple complying with a country’s laws and people being killed, and of course you provide no rationale for this nonsensical conclusion.

Apple is a public corporation and it makes no sense to not follow their rules as it is all about the money.

What is done in other countries is not my worry. Their rules and their enforcement. You can request rule changes, but pulling out of the market when you don't get them does not help anyone except the competition's bottom line.

Pull out of China, Russia, Saudi and every other dictatorship... If every company did this we’d probably be living in a better world today, but money is all that matters.

because China, Russia, and Saudi Arabia can’t steal or develop their own technology to replace it?

So you will no longer buy or use Apple products, right? You’re selling all your Apple gear, right? If not doesn’t that make you a supreme hypocrite? How could you possible stick with products made by a company you now despise?

But socialism is so awesome. I learned that from AOC. She is smart.

she has to be.
she went to college.
she wears glasses.
Russia isn't (anymore) socialist. Paternalist capitalism and oligarchy. What the US is slowly turning into.

Google already caved there, not sure what Apple will do here.

i wish this was "Equivalent to Jailbreaking"
i wouldn't have to wait for exploits, i'd just pay a reshipper and buy straight out of Russia.

good job threatening me with a good time Apple 😂

You mean countries like the United States? Seriously, are you even looking at what's happening in the US?

I’ve concluded that the right to bear arms is meaningless. If people were going to revolt it would have already happened.

your quite wrong , they lost tens of millions fighting with the government over unlocking phones.

they have no problem loosing money for keeping there phones secured.

Emmm...10 of millions is nothing for Apple, Tim could cover it from his own pocket if there was such need.
Apple will do and say anything, IF it leads to bigger profits...
In this case- flexing privacy blanket statements in US was bringing more positive PR for them in the US, public was on their side and, hopefully, it will bring more money for them in the US. Apple and publics perception, what is "right" thing to do was the same.
The moment, when they will feel, that these "right" positions interfere with market share, profits or ban, they will forget all about it give into government apps or censorship or whatever...because again- these "right" things are not bringing them profit in this specific situation.
Russia is the biggest country in the world, Apple is not going away from it- they either will agree to governments rules or get some major lobbyist to cancel this law in general.
I guess, Samsung and Microsoft and others also will not want to waste their resources to install some junk on tablets and laptops.

Put the software on the iPhones. Sell them. Claim ignorance when a tethered connection to iPhone makes it possible to delete the software.

No, not wrong. Set yourself a reminder about you thinking Apple is going to just pull their devices from the entire Russian market. The only person who believes this is yourself and few Apple loving extremists on here. They sure showed the Chinese Government that they'll not be forced to do any changes to their hardware/software platform or the App store marketplace; didn't they?

Tim once again talking tough when it suits him but completely silent about China, Saudi Arabia etc.....

What a detestable human being

Time for Apple to pull out of Russia.

The cost of a single data security breach and its long term affects and implications on the image of Apple worldwide is not worth the risk of a few iPhone sales in one market.

Socialism is a type of policy. We live in a democratic republic, but we also have many socialist policies. Do you like snow plows? Fire departments? Etc etc... People who complain about socialism are usually ignorant to the fact that they make use of socialistic policies and services all the time.

Maybe so, but she is an idiot. 90% of what she says is crap. Green New Deal, laughable. World is going to end in 15 years? Right. This lady is scarier than trump. She needs to go.
Can you quote where she said the "world will end" in 15 years? Irreversible or dramatic changes isn't the same as ending. We're on track to be the hottest decade in recorded data.

If major tech companies like Apple, Google, Samsung, etc. all just simply refuse to sell their products in Russia as a result of this legislation I have a feeling the legislation would disappear very quickly.

Doubtful.

Putin does not care about the people of Russia, so they would suffer with the loss of products from these companies, while Putin and the Oligarchs would be able to get this tech smuggled in for their personal use and enjoyment.
