You do realize that these are just set up in common work areas. They aren't supposed to be for ALL the employees....
You would still have your safe space....

I HATE this kind of setup. I'm a software developer and this kind of setup is hell for us. It is so hard to concentrate and problem solve at work because its non-stop noise and chatter and distractions.

This kind of setup can work in some cases, but its not for everyone. Not everyone works the same and I simply can't think when all I hear is noise.

Or rather...seems like Facebook copied the Pixar style of open work flow that Steve Jobs developed when he was there...

Looks like they're going for the Facebook style of open work flow which is a great model. I work for a tech company of very friendly and hardworking people, but it's still set up cubicle or pod style, which makes interaction and collaboration more difficult when you have to maneuver through a network of pods.

The table is the news. The agile workspace is something Apple has done for quite a while. Jobs encouraged the concept at Pixar when became CEo in the mid 80's and continued on with it upon his return to Pixar.

Seriously? Apple are installing large tables to encourage agile working like many companies have been for 25 years and this is news?

What next, a Jony video proclaiming that the desks are unashamedly wooden?

According the USDA a mature White Oak grows anywhere from 38" to 50" in diameter and can be over 100 feet tall. Maybe they're going to line the basement with it and start making Apple brandy.

I'm having hard time figuring out what 16,000 employees will be doing at the new campus.

Is it mostly a lot of group meetings and discussions of ideas and concepts? Is that what these tables are for?

Because when it comes down to actual software development... it's one person typing in code. Or a small team writing code that ultimately gets collected by one person.

Or maybe a handful of people in Jony's secret lab with a CNC milling machine.

Sorry for my ignorance :) ... I just have no idea how huge corporations work. Microsoft has 40,000 employees at their Redmond campus. It boggles the mind.

Whoever is sitting at the end of the table can use his/her Apple device to interact with the person at the other end.

Coming in 2018, Samsung's new oval-shaped HQ in a small town called Scooperteeno. It will feature a new and innovative collaborative design called the S-Collaboration Center featuring 20-foot tables made from white ash trees.

You may laugh. But white ash is lighter (in colour) and thinner (than mahogany) and performance is more important than substance! When it comes to tables anyway.

I agree with you. True innovation happens in true silence when people leave the office at 5 or before they come in in the morning. Once you get people talking, it is going to be "Lets make the phone smaller this time.".

Meanwhile my office is called a 'headquarters' (rather than a 'campus' - which is what all the cool kids use). Inside our 'headquarters' we have pretty generic white tables, and POS 'highly managed' Dells, slowed down by all software being launched remotely. Oh, and they have dual 17" monitors (I never get why the dual 17" monitors instead of decent-sized monitors - cheaper?)

Any jobs going Apple? I'll clean your toilets, pour the coffee and clean everybody's shoes...

It's interesting to see the new campuses of Apple, Facebook, and Google and how they express their cultures through it.

Apple's is perfectly machined, never before used building techniques to create a pristine, beautiful sculpture that people work in.

Google is an evolving organism under a dome ceiling, with entire offices and areas that can be rearranged with cranes.

Facebook is scrappy, utilitarian (but still comfortable) warehouse where it's ok to write on the wall and get messy if you need to.

my wife works at Apple the pods where people who next to each other text instead of talk to each other - everything is politically correct there....

No wonder they're upselling & gauging customers with 16GB flagship iPhones and iMac's with 5400RPM harddrives.

It's too funny watching so many people here getting the shakes and worked up over what furniture Apple has chosen for some of their work areas. No matter what it is, how big or small, Apple continues to have enormous power over their lives.
