He's a 16 year veteran who ran iPod and iPhone engineering before allegedly moving to this car project. He's got 108 granted patents and 172 patent applications to his name.

How about MR waits for a confirmation from Apple before pushing that headline?

I have to agree. Furthermore if you take the watch market as an example, the lukewarm Apple Watch hasn't created a real stir here. Therefore I have a hard time to imagine Apple could come up with anything ground braking. Designing a car is an even further departure from Apple's usual playing field.

I would be perfectly happy if Apple would just release macs with descent processors and dedicated graphic cards inside them o_O
It's worth noting that, though we don't have exact figures, reports suggest that the Apple watch is the best selling smartwatch on the market. The market just isn't that big compared to Smartphones. (And honestly I don't know why people were expecting it to be for a peripheral device)

he project has encountered some challenges internally due to a lack of clear goals, according to the report.
Sure they lack clear goals.

Ive: I want to make it thinner!
Cook: I want to make more money!!
Schiller: Guys, what about...
Ive: Thinner, thinner, thinner!
Cook: MOOOONEEEYYY!!!
Arendt: For the first 5 years it should be available only by pre-order.
Cook: In gold and rose gold!
Arendt: Yes! Hermès exclusive!
Ive jumping on Apple car roof: THINNER, THINNER, THINNER!!!

Okay, what we know so far about the iCar:

The tires will be very thin and can only be upgraded by sending the car to the
Apple Genius Car center (Buying out all Sears Automotive outlets for 20 Billion)
Wheels are attached with pentalobe screws, rubber part of tires glued to the rims
The lowest model battery will just last until noon
It will run autoOS 20.0
Due to a new revolutionary welding process all parts will fit,
and be bigger on the inside than the outside
Performance is not the same with a motor from SAMSUNG vs. a motor from ..........
The chip driving the car will be an A2020X
It can be controlled with the Apple watch by spinning the crown
Yes, Applecare, but will be refused if the car gets wet (blue stripes on the window
to show water damage)
No 3.5 mm headphone jack
Steering mechanism comes in 12" and 15", no 17"
Retina windows
Fusion motor block
There will be an iCar Air model which can fly
The iDrive app has in app purchases for fuel (cells or charging)
iFixit will give it a repair score of 1.0
isupply will estimate it's cost at $ 1.99
keyless entry, but if you forget your passcode you have to throw the car away
The pope will bless the car
upon registration NY and California will put a location chip on the windshield to prevent
criminals from driving iCars
It can be driven by people of all genders, colors and races = diversity
Google and Samsung will have their cars out in 2019, but they will only drive on Sundays.
Every fall new iCars will be released with different colorful tires and interior.
The Hermes all leather exterior and interior version will cost $ 150,000
Elon Musk will state: We welcome competition, but Apple and a car ,brouahahahaha

PS: And yes, Steve would have never allowed this!

Haha, exactly my thoughts you beat me too it whileI was typing my facts.
BTW: Learned from an investors note by Kuo Mi Ching dangling, who has a reliable track record.

It's hard to imagine an Apple car anyway, given the challenges they're currently having just trying to debug the current products. One minute the company is creating gadgets like Apple Watch, the next minute the rumors suggest a completely different project of much larger scale.

Perhaps this is the beginning of the end for their computers. That's one way to ease the focus away from one product line to make room for another. They can easily let computers coast and split their primary focus between the current cash cow as well as the upcoming car. They'll certainly command a very high premium for a people mover and position the company as a leader in electric vehicles. Even if they're not, that won't stop the hard core fans from claiming they are, and that's probably enough.

With all the attention Apple gets for the slightest of rumors, this might be the real deal going forward.
I agree. Their cash hoard has made them arrogant even more the past few years. Its going to take years to deplete the bank but what goes up must come down. The bigger they are the harder they fall. Tech is one of the first industires to fall during an economic crisis. This year will be extremely hard on Apple when countries go after their tax money owed to them and the economy tanks. Apple is not the same company it was and Steves ideas are all used up. Nothing left in the pot to cook.

Yeah because all those problems Microsoft is having with Surface totally makes me want to go out and get Skylake notebook right now.

Wow, what a mess in Surface Land!.

I still think the analysts are wrong. The "Apple Car" project is not to develop a production car for sale; Apple will not be competing with Ford or GM directly for consumers. Rather, I think Apple sees a convergence between the mobile technology developed over the last decade and what will be used in cars in the next decade, and they are focusing on developing that technology so they can have some influence or part of that future. To that end, I believe they are developing all sorts of ideas, systems, and technologies that perform a wide range of car functions, but they are not planning on actually releasing an Apple Car. Instead, they will license or sell whatever they come up with.

Not denying that you maybe be right that Apple isn't developing an AppleCar, at least not for production. But you are DEFINITELY wrong about "Instead, they will license or sell whatever they come up with"

When in the history of Apple as we know it today (return to SJ onwards) did Apple ever create something and let someone license it? Apple is greedy, they want full control and maximum profit. What you describe is Bill Gates mentality and was how Microsoft approached the last decades.

I can almost guarantee that this will NOT be Apple's approach. Maybe they are really making a car or they are just experimenting with the idea or its controlled publicity or controlled distraction from something completely different.

Funny :) A little stretch but today it's perfectly imaginable :D

From an  Spaceship.

Psst. Which is being built right now in Cupertino.

Right because if it's reported in the WSJ that makes it fact.

Likely some truth to that... Then again, TC never has gotten along with WS. One of his biggest weaknesses.
[doublepost=1453654130][/doublepost]
One guy isn't a blow to a project... if it were they shouldn't proceed at all. I'm willing to bet they have multiple talented leaders with the experience they need. Besides, sometimes fresh thinking is better than established thinking. Maybe an outsider will be better. Maybe Apple will finally pony up 30 billion for Tesla with a stake in SpaceX (my personal recommendation if I could deliver one)

Not exactly true. I have been a few projects where a person is the morale heart of the team (usually leadership) and their departure is a felt. When this type of individual leaves, frequently, the team never quite gets back to their former level of "greatness".
Not saying he was one of those "leaders". but...
[doublepost=1453654745][/doublepost]
no but they will try to lockout 3rd party repair shops.

Bet the jailbreak will be interesting too...

LOL. That's why it's called MacRumors.

The problem is that almost everything is STATED AS FACTS, when you read headlines, or read articles, there is no maybes or, reserve in anything.... This clickbaity shift in tone has occured in the last 5 years.

Even in rumours, there is degrees, some are near 100% and some are well close to BS; a better site... Would actually not put nearly everything on the same level, for clicks, and then say... Hey.. Rumors.. That's one hell of a copout.

Exactly. And when things like this get shared on social media often times all you see is the headline. And this headline is pretty much matter of fact even though Apple hasn't confirmed it nor has anyone who might be in the know. How hard is it to throw 'WSJ says' in the title or the word 'reportedly' which is what some other sites did.

Bad headline. Before reading, didn't know if "Steve Zadensky, who's leading the Apple Car project, is going to leave Apple" or "Frustration/dissatisfaction with Apple Car project has motivated Steve Zadensky to leave Apple"

One of the very bad trends also is constant editorializing, so you got so called rumors and opinion all mixed in.
That's an outcrop of blogging, were this would be acceptable. One of the worse is editorializing is motivation pegging (trying to read minds and found out why a person, or a company did or may do something).

Also, like you said, there is no quoting sources (often you don't know where it comes from or its something someone just pulled out of their ass), having your sources be verified (a confirmation it was called) is now as rare as snow in July in Death Valley. If there is no sources, of course they can't be verified; makes sense...

False equivalencies is also rampant, what some twit on youtube does, says is as worthwhile (or even more worthwhile (sic)) as if it was published in the New England Journal of medicine, because well, it has clicks so it must be true!!

So was the iWatch rumor and then the Apple Watch came and it was pointless.
AN Apple Watch is essentially a small computer. Same with the phone. But a car? Really?

Apple is doing what all corporations seem to do when they get too big and successful: it forgets that it's not perfect. It expands into industries that it knows nothing about. The saddest part of all is that there are so many amazing opportunities Apple could focus on, but instead they are chasing this half baked Apple Car idea. It will be one of the most expensive and disastrous business flops in history.

Give us examples of " amazing opportunities ".

The old Apple, maybe. There has been nothing under Cook's leadership that makes me believe Apple is still capable of pulling a rabbit out of a hat and 'wowing' anybody. It's been the opposite, a steady steam of underwhelming products...The Apple Watch, new MacBook, Mac Mini or crappy accessories like the new battery case or clunky Apple Music.

The only success we've seen from Cook is pretty much making the same core phones/tablets they've already made in different sizes - bigger phones (no allegedly smaller phones too), bigger iPads, etc.

When corporations fire someone, they always say it's for personal reasons, or to pursue other opportunities. Both sides sign non-disclosure agreements and severance goes from the "fireor" to the "fireee" (I know, no such words).

Yea I get that but we weren't talking about Apples performance under Tim Cook. We were discussing what that person thought Apple would be in regards to this initiative.

All I'm saying is Apple was never about licensing. Whether it should or not is another matter also.
