Apple should have bought Tesla years ago. Although I doubt Musk woulda sold. Apple has more money than most countries. They should just build their own car manufacturing plant here in the US. Perhaps in Detroit. Revitalize the city and the US auto manufacturing industry as a whole. Bam!.

On one hand, the thought of poorly designed internal computing and nav from car companies makes me excited to see what Apple can bring to the table. On the other hand, their laughable execution in web services from .mac forward makes me cringe at the thought of having any part of a moving vehicle reliant on iCloud.

When I saw "iCloud", internally I just cringed. o_O

Apple is said to be aiming to complete work on the car in 2019 or 2020.

What does it mean to "complete work" on this? Is this when the design is ready for production? Or when the factories are actually ready to produce it? Or when customers start receiving it?

Lots of issues come up when you first mass produce a car - they're going to need to be quick to catch issues and recall them before they make too many defective cars.

I expect that Apple is going to underestimate the difficulty of making a car. They'll say that they've learned from Tesla's mistakes and that they won't make the same ones... but I just don't expect this to go well for Apple.

We're supposed to believe that BMW cares more about privacy than Apple? I'm not saying it's impossible, it just seems unlikely. That's not to say that BMW doesn't care about privacy, but Apple certainly has a strong record.

No, and that wasn't the point. They make particular privacy guarantees and are responsible for observing various privacy laws. They cannot cede to a third party control over customer data unless they control the process (or are willing to assume the risk of trusting the third party). Apple will not give them that level of control over iCloud. That creates an impasse. There are ways around that problem, but only if one party or the other gives up substantial control.

Recent article stated Apple was beefing up their lobbying arm. The car might be the main reason. Even if this car comes to fruition, Apple is still going to have to spend a ton of money on ancillary lobbying efforts to get the cars sold in various states. Currently dealership owners in several states have a monopoly on selling cars. Tesla can tell Apple all about the shenanigans of state and local politicians when it comes to selling cars without franchised dealerships. It's a clusterf.

On topic: I think Apple is only going to be able to use a contract manufacturer to build this car. No branded manufacturer is going to cede control like Apple wants.

BMW stores everything about your driving habits on your car key. They upload the information to their central server when you go to the dealer. At least this is how the dealership explained it to me.

Why would they do that?

Warranty and service issues, amongst other reasons.
If the motor blows up and BMW records indicate that it was
being run with two few quarts of oil, the warranty claim would be denied.

Exactly. Apple might end up buying Hyundai or somebody.
Plus they'll have the advantage of using airbags instead of suicide nets.

I don't get it. If all Daimler or BMW are doing is manufacturing, why would they care about iCloud or whatever technology is behind Apple Car?
Only being contract manufacturers is precisely what these companies don't want, because they know that there is greater value in the consumer data and customer experience.

Regarding the privacy thing, I believe it. You have to realize that data protection has a much higher priority in Germany (and other European countries) than in the US, and consumers have far-reaching rights regarding the control over their own data. Just look at the recent overturning of the US/European Safe Harbor agreement by the EU court of justice. While Apple has better privacy standards than many other Silicon Valley companies, their policies are still pretty loose by European standards.

Well Sergio, CEO of FCA, is looking to combine with other major companies, maybe he would be more inclined to do so with Apple. It could be called the FCA+A

Hmm interesting. I never knew that as a former owner.

I mean we're talking about BMW here...they don't believe in cup holders and they believe food and drinks are never to be inside of your car cabin.

I could see an Apple/Tesla partnership sometime in the future in order to get a vehicle produced. Wouldn't that be a fascinating turn of events?

I prefer an Apple-Tesla combined effort, too!

Not all Tesla models need to be Apple cars, but sharing will do great things for both companies.

That video was really really really really really really really dumb.

I don't know how "420 friendly" anyone got today, but there's not enough weed in the world to make that even slightly humorous... the Siri/Apple Maps joke was very mildly amusing & EVERYTHING else fell flat. "Store the bodies of suicidal Apple factory workers in the spacious trunk!" Really??! Classless, tacky, & horrible on every level. Bad judgement call.... there's prolly like a few hundred mock Apple Car vids out there. Was your goal: post the worst and lamest one?
