Because Apple will want to land and expand their user base as quickly as possible and speculation is the UK during the fall.
It has been reported that iPhone sales have dropped at the fastest rate ever this year (sales are down 17% compared with 2018), so this will be vital for Apple to prevent customers from moving to Android phones.
Got a link to a source? I'm keen to get the Apple Card so would love for it to come out this year...

Does not seem to work with Series 0. Attempting to add it prompts an “OS update required” warning. But my Watch is as updated as it can be...

To answer your question... yes it’s also on the watch!

Oh, Apple, once again putting a gun to our heads to force us to upgrade to new and expensive hardware. Next: Apple Card Pro. Works only on iPhone Pro 11 Max R.

It works great with the Watch. I've been using it for a couple of days and it's the only card I have that doesn't require me to also enter a PIN when I use it.

What do you mean? no US credit card should be requiring you to enter a PIN when you use it either through your watch or the physical card because the US doesn't do PIN authorization on credit cards at all. Are your other cards all debit? If so, then that's why you need to enter the PIN when you make purchases with any of them.

The Series 0 is almost 5 years old..

Ah, yes, 5 years. The expected longevity of an Apple product. Never mind that the watch is compatible with other credit cards—the Apple Card is extra, extra, extra special that requires the latest hardware.

Don't exaggerate, it doesn't require the latest hardware neither on iPhone nor on Apple Watch. On Apple Watch, except for the series 0, the Apple Card is available to all models. The 0 doesn't get it because it didn't get watchOS 5, though I read in earlier posts on this thread that support for Apple Card on the series 0 may be in the works. On iPhone, even the 6/6 plus can have the Apple Card if it's updated to iOS 12.4.

Oh you don't have to upgrade to the newest and most expensive hardware to get the Apple Card. An Apple Watch series 1 and iPhone 6/6 plus will suffice to be able to use it just as long as they're both updated to the latest software (which is free). Nonetheless I have to admit that, like you, I get sicker every year of Apple's secrecy, high prices and harsh restrictions.

That earlier post was mine, and that is what I was told by Apple when I brought this oversight to their attention. After the tech went away to investigate, he came back and said it's actually a common problem. Given how well my Series 0 continues to perform at its advanced age, I can appreciate that quite a few other early adopters must still be out there.

The issue is probably the iPhone's Watch app. That is what adds cards to the Watch's wallet, and that is what is objecting to the old OS on the Watch. To my understanding, there is no functional difference between the Apple Card's MasterCard ID number and any other MasterCard's ID number (else the Apple Card could not be used on older point-of-sale terminals). It would seem no WatchOS provisions would be needed to specifically support the Card for transactions. But, "the latest" iPhone and Watch OSes are required by policy, and the programmers probably just coded a simple if-then-else statement with a less-than condition routing to a fail, neglecting the Series 0's case.

I expect I was told the truth, and that this will be fixed, probably with a small update to the iPhone's Watch app. I'll be surprised if the WatchOS itself is updated, but anything's possible.
