Feb 2020 iPhone XR speaker failure
The speaker on my Wife's iPhone XR malfunctioned. The phone rings and sounds alerts correctly but she could barely hear anyone when they called her. She had to put them on speaker to hear. Note, the ear buds sounded normally when used.

The nearest Apple store is 20 miles away, so I took it to the nearest authorized dealer, a Best Buy, who ran a hardware test on it and agreed the speaker was malfunctioning.

I did not realize it, but the speaker is integrated into the screen, so when it goes the screen must be replaced. The good news is that I had Apple Care, the Best Buy had the replacement screen, it took an hour to replace and because of Apple Care I was charged $30 dollars. I asked if this was a common issue, and the tech said yes. He also told me that without the Apple Care, the screen replacement would have been over $200 so having Apple Care paid off. :)

Note, this is the first iPhone I've needed a repair on just because something stopped working.

Was it under warranty ? Did you cause the damage?. If it is under warranty and you didn’t cause it the fact you had to replace the screen to get to the part wouldn’t matter. It should be covered under warranty

The speaker mesh was clogged with debris. If the sound coming out of it is very low volume or muffled this is always the case.

I clean earpiece grills like 5-10 times a day for customers and most of the time I can clean it from the outside with a brush. Same story always, they can’t hear anything. Rare times I have to replace the grill and when I take it to a light source and try to look through it, not even the light shines through it’s that dirty.

The issue will possibly come back because of usage habits. Try cleaning it next time.

iPhone XR here

No Apple care
No phone insurance
No case

And zero worries 👌🏻

I knew about that dirt/clogged problem and looked closely, could not see any speaker debris. I messed with it using a Q tip, nothing. When I brought it in to Best Buy, they just ran a hardware test and pronounced that the speaker was bad.

With a Q-tip it is not enough since it’s not going into the mesh. A toothbrush is sufficient.

Apple care or did you have the warranty still.... the manufacture warranty .... two different things. Should of been covered by warranty not Apple care

I believe my 1 year warranty has expired so it would be AppleCare if I’m not confused.

Honestly it should still be a warranty issue and been done for free. Apple care also extends the manufacture warranty so any issue that would of incurred would still be covered for free. Happened with my watch recently which I bough in October 2018.

Is a dirty speaker a warranty issue? However, I have had a MBP repaired under the manufacturer‘s warranty outside of the warranty period for free.

My volume was so low, and Siri microphone wasn’t hearing when I was saying hey Siri or even using Siri,

Cleaning the ear piece fixed it completely. I didn’t even know there was a microphone in there for Siri.
