I saw in another thread that an Apple silicone case started showing the ring on the phone itself despite not using the MagSafe charger (I can not remember which thread). I then took my silicone case off to look (I also only charge via lightning cable) and there was also a faint ring on my phone. Does anyone else have this issue? I am wondering if this will this be permanent on the phone if I continue to use the Apple cases?

Apple has a include a warning and photo of this potentially being a side effect of using the case with a MagSafe charger. I recommend purchasing something extra to alleviate this such as the Spigen Mag Fit Case which creates a tiny enough lip to add space between the case and charger, but still allow it to perform its function. On the contrary, you can use Apple’s clear MagSafe case and it would not happen to that one.

All in all, I wouldn’t stress this too much. How many times are you going to be looking at the back of your phone for you to notice this? While it isn’t great that Apple didn’t consider this early on, I still think the function of MagSafe weighs out how a case will look after some time.

I tried the Spigen Mag Fit and it just made a bigger ring. I presume it's due to the clamping force of the magnets.

I am referring to WIRED charging, not MagSafe charging. I do not have a MagSafe charger but still have a ring on the phone itself (no ring on outside of case).

Yes, and how bad is it to have a circle on the back of your phone?
It’s subjective isn’t it? For some, the thought of a defect like that for a $1k device is unpleasant and undesirable. Also, why are we ‘making do’, justifying, or excusing this fail by apple?

If that’s the case, reach out to Apple support. That is definitely not supposed to happen if you’re using wired charging and just using a case MagSafe built in. And definitely right them back if you do not have Apple care because that falls under their warranty provided.

It’s not excusing it... it’s just, what else can you do? Apple isn’t going to suddenly recall everything. More than likely, especially since they’ve acknowledged it’s bound to happen, are going to work on not having that happen on next year’s model. There are other options beyond having to use MagSafe.

In the case of the OP, that is different. They’re just charging the traditional way and a ring forming is not part of what Apple said would happen. That’s definitely inexcusable and should be fixed.

Pictures or it didn‘t happen ...

I posted pics of my phone with the ring from using just the case in this thread.

I don't think this is an isolated instance either. From this Reddit thread, it sounds like Apple knows about it: https://old.reddit.com/r/iPhone12/comments/kldwe9/leather_case_leaving_marks_on_back_of_phone/

There was another post about it on here in another thread (I will have to search for it)

Hmmm, if the „marks“ can be wiped off, as seems to be the case, I don‘t see a problem here. Personally, I rarely use a case, but I do use the Magsafe Duo charger. No marks so far.

Sure but isn't this the same thing with the cases themselves? Eventually, the ring ends up being permanent on the cases.

Well the cases are obviously softer than the back of the phone. I would be very suprised if magsafe left permanent marks on glass.

I’ve been using my apple leather sleeve for about a week now and I’ve only used wired charging (I do NOT own a MagSafe charger) and there are no marks on the back of my black 12. I’ll keep checking though.

+1 here Apple fake case. I don't use magsafe to charge the iphone and I have no marks anywhere on the back of the case

This is so phenomenal.
Inclusive Ring present from Apple for everyone.

Joke aside, I still have yet to see the ring on both Apple leather and silicon case. I am on PD wired charging.

If the heat dissipated during charging from back of phone, there is a possibility as I read between lines on the posts.

But my PD charging does not form the ring and it might probably be another intermittent issue as we see with yellow display.

I have a non-magsafe case for my mini, and I believe it’s forming a ring. This is a pretty high quality leather case and I only ever do wired charging. It’s tough to capture in pics but I think they’re visible here:

That Burkley is nice looking.
Thanks, yeah I love this case. The distressed antique coffee is a rich color, and the full grain leather still has an almost velvety feel after just a few days. I’m eager to see how it’ll age.

That’s rubbish, Don’t use a MagSafe charger then. Sheath is only case that doesn’t do it I have tried with the MagSafe charger, have sold it now.
I’ve never used magsafe and don’t plan to. The idea of a magnetic ring embedded in the back of a phone is sounding more and more distasteful to me. This is a design flaw/compromise by apple, simply put. I wish they offered non-magsafe ip12 models that don’t ruin cases.

I can definitely see the ring imprint in your pictures. I hope that doesn't happen to my Apple leather sleeve.

I hope not either. The sleeve looks awesome, esp the pink citrus which would be my choice. Do you use wired, qi, or magsafe charging?
