This makes NO business sense. I went to a 100% apple environment in 2012 and was going to replace my time capsule this upcoming year. Apple needs to fire Tim Cook he is killing the goose that laid the golden egg.
I'm telling 'ya, have a look at the Amplifi. It's great!

I view apologists like you symptomatic with the the current affairs of Apple: the downfall. You seem to live in a world of black and white, thinking those who raise their concerns are the haters and the whiners with you righteously positioned on the other side.

No, let me explain you something: I am whining because Apple, when they were a much smaller company, was able to cater for normalos, enthusiasts and professionals alike. They developed a much wider range of products and were still able to grow with relative good focus.

Now, a lot of billion of dollars later, all of a sudden they need to streamline their products and focus solely on consumer stuff. On trivial, superficial gimmicks. And worse, people like you seem to believe and defend this BS.

I honestly don't care if Tim Cook for instance decides to include the option of wrapping your iMessages in pink bubbles. But for sure as heck I care if in order to include gimmickal stuff like that developments in areas seem to have come to a screeching and grinding hold.

I am sorry to say this: but with your first 2-3 sentences you have excluded yourself out of any deep, analytical discussions.

Let's be fair. It's not as though there was any deep, analytical discussion going on here in the first place.

i see no mention of time capsule/time machine support on its website?
Because you should replace your router with one of these. I ditched my Time Capsule recently and got one. It's much better than Apple's offering. I just hooked a drive to my Mac and set it up with CCC now. No more slow buggy Time Machine for me. It's just a suggestion to take a look at that's all. I'm slowly moving off depending on Apple stuff as they are moving away from making computer stuff. Apple - the phone company.

Man what the SHAQFU. My whole house relies upon Airport Express and Extreme and AirPlay

I'm concerned as well since my in-ceiling speakers throughout the house are linked to different Airport Express devices as zones that we airplay to. I'm not sure what I'm going to do once they start to break. My speaker system throughout the house will be useless.

So you get a Chromecast and this app - AllCast. Now you should be able to cast any of your music from your phone to any Chromecast in the house.

I use a synology NAS for time machine (time capsules are routers, and the poster was talking about an alternative to that), but your suggestion makes no sense for most people. If you have a MBP you aren't going to sit on the couch or walk around the office with an external drive plugged into it.

A much better solution for people who want time capsule support is, for example, https://www.synology.com/en-us/products/RT1900ac. Just plug a drive into the router and you get time machine support.

If all you want is a mesh router, then you are probably better off with eero or google wifi, which look like they are more likely to be around in the long run than your suggestion (certainly google isn't going away).

If anyone out there can develop a 'Migration Assistant" to switch to Linux or Windows would be a very profitable business for a bunch of users in the millions that are actually "Pro, Average, Just users" that are really stuck in the 'loyal' Apple eco system and are sick of the "New Apple" under the current boss's, should be able to move over gracefully. It's a nightmare to switch to a new platform, especially if you have put your heart and soul into a company that you are embedded in.

Why does everyone keep saying that? Ubiquiti has been doing enterprise networking before the Amplifi. And the product is solid. Also, I don't see why you couldn't hook your NAS to the Amplifi. It's got 4 ports. That's one more than the Apple TC.

what are you talking about? people keep saying what? That the other brands are more likely to stick around? Because we think that the brands consumers know are more likely to survive the inevitable shakeup.

And yes, I can hook my NAS to anything, but I provided a link to a nice router that has lots of features, best-in-class software, and allows you to do time machine WITHOUT needing to hook up a NAS. Most users don't want a NAS, they just want the drive to be built into the router, or they want to plug an ordinary external drive into the router. Amplifi doesn't allow that, apparently.

I''m with you bud. This whole set of affairs with apple these days is extremely troubling, and some of these jackholes are cheering them on. Makes no sense.

And then get all that wonderful tracking and marketing from Google too!

Doesn't help if you multicast from a computer to many speakers at once.

Because time machine is far more stable on time capsule than anything else short of a standalone hardwired USB drive.

After watching this thread all day, in the end I'm surprised that the all mighty Apple Senior Management has not made a statement to their loyal user base. That in itself shows the arrogance of their decision. My whole family uses nothing but Apple. I'm in the market for a new router and it hurts to buy something other than Apple. But I better start getting used to it.

I have not posted on here for a decade, but this news made me dig out my password. I love the TC, living room friendly, so easy to setup, hardly ever have issues... especially compared to other gear I had prior. Who cares if it's not super profitable? It's a nice integrated part of my Apple ecosystem, which for some reason they want to keep chipping away at.

They're killing their core consumers with a death by a 1,000 cuts. It's beyond heartbreaking ... depressing.

Tim Cook is under the gun to keep profits growing. "Low-margin" products (anything less than 40%) are on the chopping block, sacrificed in the name of short-term gains. Ultimately it's all very short-sighted—as the influencers and Apple lifers leave behind the company's increasingly gaunt "ecosystem" for greener pastures—but it will give Tim Cook a few more quarters of job security.

Greed! That's all you need to say. I said it before and I'll say it again "just because you are not making huge profits on a product does not mean that the product is not essential to your business". Just because they are not making huge profits on the AirPort product doesn't mean you should get rid of it. Apple is getting greedy and they are trying to make their profits as high as possible without regard to what is best for their customers. Apple is going down hill and I'm afraid it's going to happen fairly fast. They are slowly going to get rid of anything that doesn't make them huge profits and before you know it the only hardware they are going to be selling is iPhones, iPads and maybe iwatches. They need a CEO that isn't concerned with profits above all else. THAT is how companies destroy themselves. Steve Jobs knew they needed to make money but he also knew that he needed to listen to his customers. Apple and more specifically Tim Cook cares more about profits and doesn't care about the customers other then how much money he can get them to part with. It's so sad. I really liked Apple and their products. Over the last 5 years I've bought over 30 Apple products but they are quickly making it hard to like them anymore.

You should see what's on the horizon, it typically turns to consumer level technology in 3-5 years. It's like clockwork.
No matter how hard or fast you sail to the horizon you never get there. A bit like Apples pipeline that Tim is so fond of mentioning for several years now

Exactly! They are destroying Apples long term future in the name of short term gains. Greed! Steve Jobs is rolling over in his grave.

What are they going to do with that huge new campus they are building? Their product selection is going to grow so small and their employee base is going to shrink to the point to where they will be lucky to fill half that campus with employees.

What we're talking about is the ability to connect an Airport Express via TOSLINK/3.5mm to an amplifier and stream music to it. I do this with my amp; use the Remote app to access my iTunes Library on a Mac Mini Server, tell it to stream audio to the Airport Express connected to the hifi in the living room and away you go. This is also a feature of AirPlay (it's actually the original feature of AirPlay, before they added video!)
Ah, I had forgotten about that. That is indeed unfortunate. These access points are certainly top-notch from a reliability, and even performance standpoint (at least when in the typical home use scenario). Not as feature-rich as some access points, but that's easily made up with some sort of device on the network providing any services the AirPort lacks, like a raspberry pi or something... Really, I'm fine with a fairly simple, not terribly feature-rich, but very reliable device. I've had two of them, and they both still work to this day.
