CI works with Monsanto. In Wales, we understand the toxic legacy of that company all too well. PCBs and Agent Orange were dumped at Brofiscin Quarry for decades. Problem is, the recent 'clean up' that took place just capped the problem, it didn't remove the poison. Toxic waste drums continue to be found around the area.

Had they made these contributions through Apple Pay alone, then yes I could understand their integrity.

But to limit it to just Apple Stores? Hmm...

Celebrate by buying stuff you most likely don't need from Apple. I don't think a $1 will reimburse the earth for what you needlessly bought. But I guess you must keep the economic wheels turning no matter what the cost.

It’s not as if apple were under any obligation to do any of this, so it’s a nice gesture. You could argue being the wealthiest company in history apple could do a little more, but then again other rich companies are doing nothing.

It’s with Apple only and just for one day. The specifics are so intense that this $1 donation is shameful.
Just for one day? Did you even read the article? It literally says it in the very first sentence. 🤦🏼‍♂️

What's even more effective: Don't donate and skip buying a product generation.

"Earth Day is important to Apple, and Apple often makes several efforts to highlight it."

Whilst the other 364 days Apple is hard at work stopping people opening, repairing or upgrading their products.
They’re also hard at work towards that goal the remaining day, only they’ll be also donating money 🤣

If “publicity stunt” is the only reason Apple is doing this (pretty cynical, but ok), then it seems to have backfired based on all the negative comments. So next year they shouldn’t do anything, like the majority of US companies. Problem solved...

All this negativity and toxicity is really depressing.

Sadly, generating that toxicity by putting down a corporation or well-known person (TC, for example) is the only way some people can feel a bit of power that's otherwise lacking in their lives. Unfortunately it's short-lived, requiring another round of sticking it to the man in order to feel good about themselves for the next hour or day. It's an endless cycle.

Why would the fix not be to do a better job, rather than not try? Surely if this is a cause that's important to Apple, they should be aiming to support it more in the future.

Fix what exactly?

It’s not like this is their only action for environmental causes. They have been voted most green tech company in the world three times in a row by Greenpeace. They were the first company to announce a roadmap to carbon neutrality by 2030. They announced today they’re pledging 200 million towards forest restoration, ....

I’m sure this 1$ dollar per purchase will accumulate to an impressive donation.

Everyone complaining Apple is too cheap here: I assume you will all lead by example and donate significantly?
Yeah if you want to pay me $10 to buy my pencil, I will gladly give $1 to charity. This is the same thing that Apple is doing. Apple is PROFITING off of this. Apple makes profit on every transaction that takes place on the Apple store, and they are simply giving away $1 of this profit to the environment. Apple is literally MAKING MORE MONEY because of this. This is pure greed, but par for the course for Apple, a company who only uses the environment and privacy to make money.

Fix the issue you mentioned - the negative response due to the perceived lackluster donation effort.

This is something they could absolutely address and do better. Either commit to a number that isn't tied to people buying Apple stuff with Apple Pay from Apple stores, or make it a percentage of revenue rather than a dollar per transaction. It's not like Apple can't afford to buy goodwill.

How again does apple make money from the environment and privacy? The last I looked is the revenue from customers buying your products is the way a for profit company makes money. Do you believe the hundreds of millions of apple customers are part of the infamous reality distortion field?

There is only a negative response from a vocal minority. Apple doesn’t have to do anything. Yet they have donated tens of millions in the past.

Yep. Every other smartphone manufacturer has an easy way for the user to update, upgrade, and repair their smartphones....with the added bonus is the other smartphone manufacturers offer $2 per sale.

I doubt people are going to be buying more apple products because of this initiative. At most, they may simply opt to make the purchase on Earth Day instead of some other day. For example, if I wanted to buy an Apple Watch strap, I might want to wait till next week to place my order if I thought my additional $1 donation might help. But I am not going to run out and buy an Apple Watch strap I don’t need just because Apple is donating to charity here.

I see it more as easy marketing, but I doubt Apple will see any noticeable increase in sales because of this. Maybe more sales on that day (due to deferred purchases), but not more sales for that quarter overall.

You never know, it could encourage people to buy from Apple instead of Best Buy or Walmart, which means Apple keeps more of the money for each sale (worth more than the pathetically low $1 per transaction that they are giving to the environment). This is also a tax write off for them...

It’s a two sided deal. If Best Buy or Walmart gave that “pathetic” $1 I would buy from them instead of Apple.

I think they would have been better off just saying what they’ll donate, rather than the gimmick of “Democracy! Vote with your money how much we donate”.

They only donate if only they also receive. Other companies donate without receiving...

I don't think you are aware of Apple's largess in terms of their donations. They are not obligated to give because some MR posters say so.

I fixed it for you.
1. We know everyone on the planet buys stuff, it's called living and enjoying life.
2. Use Apple Pay so we can track and control the amount being donated.
3. Only valid towards our stuff since we try our best to be a carbon neutral company. We feel buying a hummvee to get the donation would be counterintuitive.
4. That $5 Apple movie you bought along with the 100's of million other folks.. Ok we are donating a dollar for each. :)
5. Once again use Apple Pay so we know to donate.

Happy Earth Day,
Apple
Maybe they could do 1% instead of $1
