Sure - it'd be nice if corporations brought us ad-free apps for free. But then, who is going to pay the salaries of those making the apps.

A lot of corporations give out their apps ad-free, for free. Look at the insurance apps (State Farm and Nationwide), banking apps (BoA, Chase), These are useful apps. But then they also interface with products that we've already paid for or services we already use, so these companies are making their money a different way.

All of the Google Apps & Evernote are free, as are many others. Just saying that they are out there, and some are quite good.

Here's the US Apps list, for those who asked - Since I'm typing it, i'm not going to include links or prices.

You think so? I'd call that arrogance. Like Phil forgot where Apple was a few years before he joined the company – I can still picture the keynote where turtleneck Steve himself introduced a new partner... being Bill Gates of Microsoft. Oh yeah. Man that was fun.

Apple must have noticed the sheer number of add-ons over at Mozilla.org and also the still increasing number of developers offering free applications for Mozilla (these days simply called Firefox).

Oh and before I forget: Both mozdev.org and mozilla.org will introduce a paid add-on section in the near future.

Oh boy, here we go again. "Microsoft saved Apple crap" Blah Blah Blah. "Apple forgot where they came from" Blah blah blah. How many years was this ago??? Give it a rest. What seems to be forgotten is that Microsoft didn't do this to help Apple, they were sued by Apple and the $150 million was a settlement to keep MS from getting into further trouble.
Would you like someone to keep throwing it in your face that they helped you in the past?

Interesting, it's easily predicted on this forum who participates in the negative votes.

Thanks for the list. Most of those apps are quite good. AP Mobile should be taken off since they messed it up with the last big update though!

Ah yes, July 11 2008. The one day of these previous 3 years when I second guessed my switch to Macs and Apple products. Everything went wrong that day.

But by the 13th or 14th, I was a fanboy again.

App Store down

So to celebrate,  has decided to prevent you from buying anything. Check it out. iTunes store is down.

Apple should thank the jail break community for showing them the way. :apple:

In reality the iPhone SDK was planned from the get go... it just needed time to get the developer tools, signing process, documentation and the API itself fleshed out, etc. It was well underway before the iPhone was first released.

The iPhone "web" API was a short term measure and Apple is almost always non-committal about unreleased products hence they didn't want to state that a native SDK was even planned... (rather important in this case to prevent established competitors from getting a jump on their plans)

All in all the first iteration of the native SDK was fairly robust (even when compared to a few other established phone operating systems) but obviously it needed improvements on several fronts... now with the 3.0 SDK things are looking fairly good all around.

I can't wait until I have something on the app store. I'm cranking through learning Obj-C as we speak. Being a C++ programmer the process is quite easy, although I will miss templates since from my understanding Obj-C doesn't have them : /

Noticed that the tiger woods pga tour was 30% off at least in my country store, not related to this celebration but good price anyway.

I wonder if I am the only one that has a hard time finding quality apps?

Seems like the App Store is overloaded with games and joke apps that are really of little use to me. When I go to try and find something I really need, it's almost impossible to find, especially on the iPhone itself.

Exactly my point

You might want to rewrite this part of your comment... after you've listened to Mr. Steven Jobs himself, as I did in 1997.

I keep praising people who helped me in the past, simply because they deserve it i.e. there is no need to throw it in my face. Not that I did anyway, but just for the record.

In that case it must be you – I never even voted once here.

Yes the app store is cool, but no... you don't need any application (or device) to get to the schedule, especially when you are already waiting for the next train – I have used BART myself to commute to/from work and there was always a next train like every 15 minutes or so. I mean; things can't have changed that bad in just a few months. Right?

Some stations you can get there quicker by taking a train and then transfer at MacArthur. Finding this out save 10 mins off my journey time.

Waiting 15 mins for a train in a pain. Especially when you have kids to occupy. Since I live 20 mins walk to the station I would prefer to time it correctly.

Most of the apps I have downloaded have been through recommendations. Beejive, Urban Spoon etc are examples of this.

yep. surprised nobody else commented on this. there's a thread on the apple forum filled with many replies on this issue. I'm having the issue! At first I thought it was my internet connection being stupid again but nope, i'm not the only one experiencing this. grr. hurry up and fix it Apple!

As far as making real money, not really, they're too many copycat apps out there. I remember when TriggerFinger got approved, within days there was an inferior app on the store with more downloads. It's hard to keep people from copying and reselling your idea and stealing your customers. Now, imagine the nightmare on a completely open store like Android.

Maybe now they can finally get this train wreck in order.

The app store is a mess, there's no doubt, but how can they fix it?
More subcategories? We already have listes of top rated, top paid, etc.
I'm not sure what else they can do to make it easier to find apps.

I completely agree with you. It's also much easier to discover new applications in iTunes than it is on the iPhone. Although honestly, I don't usually just browse the AppStore randomly. If I come across a good recommendation, I'll usually check it out. Then again, I don't have a ton of apps on my phone, either.

You're missing the point. It's over, it's in the past. Keep it there. While your giving MS credit for helping Apple by reminding us of what happened SEVERAL years ago, are you going to give MS credit for Apple's success as well? :p

The problem is the App store is designed so that if it's a top 20 app (even top 100 doesn't cut it anymore) or you release an update every week the app can be found easily. The minute those two things don't exist it's nearly impossibly to find/sell an app. This is why there is a flood of useless and copycat apps. It's cheaper and more beneficial to release multiple (useless) apps daily to stay on the New Release pages than to have a decent app in the top 50 and get almost no visibility.

My issue is the latter, which is why I'm ranting about it.

^^I completely agree with you.
There is nothing worse than trying to look through "new releases" and seeing the SAME damn app in 20 different flavors - some of the sports team ones are the worst at this
I just don't know how it can be fixed..

Maybe New Releases are only shown for a day or two? And if it's a bug update or re-release of an existing product it doesn't get to show up in the "new" section?
Maybe a more prominent "Staff Recommends" for each section - that could easily weed out the copycats, though would likely lead to charges of favoritism by Apple staff or something.
