If ONLY Apple Music app would allow to select/mark favourite songs and add them automatically to a “favourites playlist” that would make consider switching from Spotify.
Something like toggling the "love" heart icon next to a song and creating a live updating smart playlist with the criterion "Love is Loved"?

Fact: Apple Music is not what it used to be. Competition has dulled its excitement and made it boring.
Fact: I have not made a music purchase form Apple in years.

I tried Apple Music for a month or so last year and absolutely hated it coming off of Spotify. Hated. I can only assume Apple Music has done as well as it has because of Apple's enormous competitive advantage within their own ecosystem.
Four years ago when I jumped into streaming, I tried Spotify first with their 3 months for $1 offer. After it expired, I tried Apple Music.

Curiously, I found Apple Music's UX better and more intuitive although it took a few days to get used to the different logic of the UX (which is by no means perfect). Spotify clearly had better community playlists and recommendations at the time, and probably still do.

I stuck with Apple Music and haven't used Spotify since so I can't compare the two anymore.

Just putting this out there as my first-hand experience of trying both services out.

If I select my library to play for HomePod minis I want my library ONLY. If I select a curated station designed for Me I expect new artists that extend beyond my library and introduce me to new artists. Instead, I either get a very small selection from my library of artists and 5-10 times new artists or worse.

That’s called Publisher contracts ensuring their catalog is constantly replayed. I end up fast forwarding on my phone within Home too much.

Give my a variety of Station types, update their limited size lists throughout the date relative to how often the initial list is cleared, but also just create random lists from just music artists in my personal library.

I don't want a deep connection to artists. In fact I don't want any connection to artists, I don't care about them at all. This is a financial transaction, I will pay you to listen to songs I like. I want it to be easy to find songs I like.

Every day it gets harder to find new good music.
Almost everybody is an artist, as you don't need to know how to sing to be a singer.
No need to know how to play an instrument, just copy/paste pieces from the work of others.
Want to attract tons of people to your concerts? Sing in underwear.
Want the crowds to cheer? Curse, curse, curse, swear, swear, swear, and be very explicit.

Under these conditions, I don't really care if the collection has reached 100M songs.
High volume doesn't equal to high quality.
Oh, lol, you have at least one teenaged kid. I remember how many parents used to say the same when MTV came out. It happens every generation

Sturgeons law roughly paraphrased as “99% of things are crap”. 99% of songs, 99% of my comments, 99% of streaming shows, 99% of scientific research.

I just wish it was easier to find that 1%.

I don’t need music with context. I am a simpleton…if I like how it sounds great. I already liked Runaway by Kanye before I got analysis on the context. If the context comes first or the artist thinks it’s a priority the music likely sucks.

I initially took issue with the words "invention of iTunes", since invention often means creating something new. iTunes was a rebranded version of an upgraded, simplified SoundJam app after Apple purchased the app. But the developers of SoundJam were former Apple employees, so in a sense, Apple indirectly created SoundJam. This reminds me of Steve and NeXT being bought by Apple to create OS X.

I've been with Apple Music since April, and while I like it, I wish they would improve recommendations and provide more ways in which you can find new music. Perhaps I'm not doing things right, but from my experience of ten years plus of Spotify, I still prefer Spotify for new music.

The Apple Music exec. said the following...

"And just one of the many ways we are helping to provide context is through the new Apple Music Today series, where we'll be picking a new song every day and diving into its history,"

They cannot even do that well. Today's song is Nothing Compares 2 U. No mention of the fact that the song was written by Prince, not Sinead O'Connor. All that is said is that Sinead sang the song on SNL while tearing up the photo of the pope 30 years ago. As a result, she was "cancelled" and that basically was her last hit. No mention of how long the song was in the charts, sales figures etc. What a low quality history lesson.

I personally have moved to Spotify as my streaming service mainly because its free. I'm slowly manually migrating over many of my iTunes (Music) playlist, but seriously, I hope something doesn't happen where I eventually end up having to move to Apple Music. Just can't deal with the chore of doing this over again. Spotify is suppose to have an automatic import of iTunes (Music) playlists, but it doesn't seem to work or I need to subscribe to premium for that or the instructions are outdated. There are some songs I just can't seem to find at all on Spotify or they seem to be covers. But, it meets most of my needs. I currently subscribe to iCloud, but I can't justify spending any more money on subscriptions to play songs I literally ripped or already downloaded already.

My music taste pretty much stopped at 2012, 2003 if I were to be totally honest.

And how much do the artists get paid?
PlatformPay per streamStreams to get $1,000
Tidal$0.01376,924
Apple Music$0.01100,000
Amazon Music$0.004250,000
Spotify$0.0033303,030
YouTube Music$0.008125,000
Pandora$0.0013769,231
Deezer$0.0064156,250
If you want the longer version

i miss
- smart playlists on iOS and iPadOS
- remembering (bookmarking) the last played song in a playlist

with the rest of the music app i am happy
best features - for my household
- taking over control from an other device (multiuser)
- switching between atv and iPods
- multiroom (airplay 2)
- losless, sound quality overall

I can search Spotify for “men singing about men” and discover new songs I might want to add to my collection. Apple Music is unable to do this, which I find odd given Apple‘s CEO is out, but Apple Music is still in the closet? 🤷 🌈

Wow, 21 years already... and still a disappointing UI that makes it so hard to do practically anything swiftly on either hardware... I guess it'll take another 20+ years; fingers crossed. Too bad I won't be able to see or hear that accomplishment.

How many songs had they sold on iTunes before they unceremoniously stopped it and replaced it with that junk Apple Music?

Apple Music is crap software and did not and has not replaced the superior product called iTunes, that was a great digital asset manager. Apple does not want you to own your own music and video’s - go figure. And what ever happened to the product that was to manage and operate the home theater/entertainment systems called front row that integrated into iTunes?

Apple - Give us back our iTunes!!!

If you have an iPhone, click on the the "iTunes Store" app. If you you have a mac, open the Apple Music app, go to the column on the left and click on "iTunes Store."

There is no "unceremoniously" because they never stopped it. There is nothing for Apple to 'give back,' because they never took it away in the first place.

You want iTunes? You still have iTunes. You want to "own" your digital tracks? Apple will take your money and sell them to you.

It would've taken you less time to actually look for it and find it than it did for you to type up this complaint.

Yet every time I try to find a classic song from yesteryear it's not in the store or has been removed, are you sure it's 100 million? More like 99 million mindless drivel songs. o_O
It's because of geo-restriction and licensing...

I usually listen to Japanese songs as well as Japanese songs used in anime or live action, however, for some songs the only way I can add them to my playlist is for me to use a VPN and set my location to Japan...

I have experienced this in both Spotify and Apple Music... I know at least one song/video in YouTube that can only be accessed if you are at least located in Japan or your IP address is used in Japan...

[Aioraito] iolite by joy

The song title I mentioned above, I am not able to access when I am using my local network connection but once I use a VPN service, there it is... If I access it using the direct link while on my local network connection, it will say video not available or not available in your country due to licensing, but will work fine while connected to VPN set to Japan...
