Considering the bill of materials for the rumoured components, this device is easily going to start at an affordable $3999 for the base model. And it will be worth it.

I am excited about AR/VR‘s possibilities, and I know Apple’s been working on this since the 90’s. Hopefully they knock it out of the park, but I’m not holding my breath. I’ve seen way too many botched/underwhelming new product/service launches from Apple in the Tim Cook era to get excited about this.

I've been very under whelmed by having LiDAR on my iPhone. I've tried Apps supporting it and they're ok but nothing that makes me feel that the LiDAR is a must have feature. I wouldn't miss it if it was dropped. What percentage of iPhone owners would?
Tim's comment:

makes me think that we're paying for hardware on our iPhones to allow Apple to nurture an early AR App eco-system.
You should try the Scaniverse app. It’s free and quite amazing. You can 3D scan anything and text it to another iOS user in seconds, or save it in different 3D formats if you want to tinker with it in something like Blender. I’ve used it for professional purposes on multiple occasions, but I really love it for saving memories. IMO it’s the future of photography.

I’ve been using Scaniverse to capture fun places or moments (as opposed to camera).

Edit: perhaps you weren’t aware that the LiDAR also improves ARkit experiences. If you don’t ever touch AR apps I’d not expect you to notice, but as a frequent AR app user (and builder) it’s clear that the LiDAR results in faster and more reliable anchoring.

Would love to have VR on X-Plane 12 😁
AR is cool and useful in the real world (directions, added info on "what you see", etc.). But I am curious to find out how Apple solves the physical and social aspect of a device you have to wear on your head.

Apple's best AR/VR device yet.
Tim:

Frankly a fantastic, stunning, amazing, remarkable, gorgeous, tremendous magical, meticulously crafted awesome device.

And when you make 💗 and put our Apple Glasses on, your partner gets an Animoji overlay making him/her/it look even more attractive.
Didn’t you always dream of making 💕 with one of our Animojis 🐷🐵🐔?
Did I say “one”?
Of course not, by subscribing to our new service AppleLovesMyDingDong you can have up to five Animoji overlays at the same time. For only $5.99 per month. That way you don’t confuse your lover with your partner, we simply deeply care of your relationship.

That’s a truly amazing experience that will enrich your life and you’ll never forget.

What would be really cool would be AR prescription glasses. Glasses that correct your prescription through AR instead of a big chunk of curved plastic. Over 60% of all adults. 4 billion people worldwide. 35 million glasses sold in US annually. The market is huge. Then anything could be added on - zoom, calls, maps, games, photos, payment. If you want to read a label or find a splinter in your finger you probably already use the magnifying glass on your phone. Would be very cool to have this on glasses.

Big shift for him to say “stay tuned to see what we have to offer” from ~“I can’t comment on what we might be working on.”

This kind of language isn’t accidental, so I wonder why they felt it was important to hint hard, now. Maybe, buy the dip.

The best applications of such technology, which would justify the price, are professional. Surgery, remote assembly / guidance, virtual design. Something towards Microsoft’s HoloLens.

HoloLens was a cool concept, but it lacked the quality to make it fun and professional to use. I think that is where Apple with its chips, interaction precision and attention to detail could succeed.

For me though … none of that is appealing any longer. I am tired of virtual worlds, whether gaming or at work. But others will welcome it, I am sure.

I haven’t been this non excited since there were rumors about the Apple Watch.

Oculus Rift was released 10 years ago, and every year since then VR was touted as “the future, and everyone who is not able to realize that is a moron”. I have never seen any other tech shilled so desperately like that.

One interesting use case I saw was during a showcase for Oculus, where the person is in their own (virtual) space, and you can sit with a massive, curved display in front of you, which is basically a computer monitor.
This in AR would immediately change the way people use technology; your computer screen is anywhere you are.
No more expensive monitors, just use your AR glasses.
I'm not sure whether I'm for or against this technology overall, but there is absolutely no doubt that it will change the world. The people who dismiss VR/AR have never experienced it.

This language shift is definitely not accidental, and it probably means that an announcement or preview isn't too far off.

Man has been "excited about AR" since forever, repeating it every year since 2016 like a broken record.

Tim Cook, 2040:
"I'm excited about AR"

It won't be for games, because apple has persistently failed to invest or bother with gaming.

it won't be for professional / technical software because this is almost exclusively for windows.

So I guess it'll be for viewing your Photos.app images and browsing in Safari.

I am looking forward to any new hardware from Apple. But with some sort of AR device, especially when the rumored prices are in the right range, I have no idea what the use was for me personally would be.

I do See use cases in a professional environment, e.g. for training, but I doubt, that Apple will target that market.

Anyway, it will be exciting to see technology develop!
