Apple CEO Tim Cook: iPhone 11 Sales Are Off to a 'Very, Very Good Start'

Ahead of today's earnings call covering the fourth fiscal quarter of 2019, Apple CEO Tim Cook said in an interview with Reuters that iPhone 11 sales are off to a "very, very good start" so far, and the launch has led to improved sales in key markets like China.

In China in particular, the lower $699 starting price of the iPhone 11 is "more similar to the price points that [Apple] had great success with in the past," Cook said, which helped drive sales.


Apple is predicting strong holiday quarter sales with guidance between $85.5 billion to $89.5 billion, and Cook said that the guidance is based on strong sales of services and wearables as well as promising early sales of the new 2019 iPhones. Apple no longer provides specific sales data on the iPhone, so it's difficult to determine how many of the new devices that Apple sold.

Cook said that the numbers also reflect Apple's belief that the United States and China will resolve their trade dispute. "I don't know every chapter of the book, but I think that will eventually happen," Cook said. "I certainly hope it happens during the quarter, but we'll see about that."

Lowering iPhone prices for older iPhones in China has also helped slow mid-year sales declines. iPhone sales in China picked up towards the end of the quarter, and Apple also saw double-digit services revenue growth in China. Cook attributed it to several factors during the earnings call:
We had a very good September in the lead of that is sort of the reception of iPhone 11 and 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max and so we feel really good about how we've gotten started there. As you can tell from the numbers, we've significantly improved from the beginning of the year.

There's a very slight growth there. We obviously want that to be better, but we feel good about how we're doing. I think it's a combination of things that have turned things around. On a macro basis, I think the trade tension is less, which clearly looks positive.

Secondly, the products have been extremely well received there. Third, the things that we've done from a pricing, financing, and trade-in point of view, all of these things have moved the dial. It's the sum of all that.
Cook also said that services, wearables, and other devices played a role in growing revenue in China alongside the iPhone. "Lots of positives there," he said.

So they should be. The iPhone 11 is the first model to make me consider upgrading from an iPhone 7. That wide angle lens and the improved photography are a big deal. The only thing that stops me is I’m not quite sure about the screen size.

lol you mean the phone that’s $250 cheaper than the flagship, yet has MOST of the features of the flagship is selling like hotcakes!?!?!?!? Wow, who would have thought?

Edit: $300 cheaper. I thought they started at $750, but my point still stands

When starting to read the headline I already knew exactly what Tim was going to say.
Would you expect him to say anything else? He has no reason to lie, and quite frankly, he can’t under these types of conditions. Undoubtedly the iPhone 11 has been successful, especially ramping up production.

Tim Cook says that every year.
OK, we get it, ‘Tim Cook says this every year’. But what would you expect him to say otherwise? He’s the CEO of a billion company, of course he’s going to boast about Apples new product lineup, sales/services, ect. And traditionally, the iPhone has always done very well, so his comment is in line with the overall success.

I have an X and it’s always in a plastic case. For the people that use a case, it’s not like we’re admiring the stainless steel on the phone. Either way, my 11 will be going in a plastic case when I get it.

I was at the my local apple store and they seemed to have every flavor of iPhone 11 and pro in stock. Which tells me a month after its release, everyone that had to have it already got it. So I'm sure the sales are down more with each new intro. I went to a pro 11 from a iPhone 6, so I skipped what? 5 generations on upgrades. And they probably wont see me again for another 5 years unless 5G has some unforeseen rapidity in its roll out. Somehow I suspect anyone that doesn't suffer from more money than brains is making similar decisions about their upgrading habits.

I'm not sure I agree. It's hard to tell the buying habits of the masses. I usually wait three years, upgrading from a 6s to an Xs Max. I upgraded spouse from iphone 7 to iphone xr. Others in my family upgrade every year. Others I know upgrade every 2 or 3 years and yet others don't upgrade until their phones literally drop.

So it's all over the map as far as I can see.

And a reported guidance of the holiday season at $85B is off the charts.

There will be somebody who is looking to upgrade their phone every year.
The lower starting price of the 11 and the upcoming SE2 (if it were true) will be huge for Apple, especially if they keep the momentum for 2020. Maybe even more if the can drop back the starting price of new iPhones to the traditional $650.

I went to the Apple Store last weekend and I was surprised at how ugly the iPhone 11 is. It felt a bit cheap, too. I purchased the 11 Pro instead.
For me with an 8 the 11 doesn't feel like a big step, from the design perspective, I think 6 to 8 was a bigger step, when it come to the feel of the phone.

For $699 it is a good phone for sure, I guess the only thing to be improved is the screen but it's hard to justify the $300 dollar markup for that.

Interestingly, i think the size of it is what pushes many people to the Pro, coming from an earlier generation, this phone is just gigantic. So I'm cautious with what the rumored SE might turn out to be, if anything.

I don't see the point of a hardware refreshed iPhone 8, but a smaller and cheaper version of iPhone 11, at say 5 or 5.5 inch will just cannibalize on iPhone 11 sales.

So adding $100 will make it feel like the glass and aluminum that it's actually made of?

I don't see the point of a hardware refreshed iPhone 8, but a smaller and cheaper version of iPhone 11, at say 5 or 5.5 inch will just cannibalize on iPhone 11 sales.
I think it's because not everyone could afford a $700 phone or one with a contract and need something that's a bit cheap on the outside and have the same hardware specs as the latest iPhones have on the inside.

So now they are selling zero and Just pilling up inventory? Great analysis!

OR they have caught up to demand and now have availability in their product line. One of Apple’s greatest strengths is the ability to push their product through a massive amount of channels and have the product available for purchase everywhere. You don’t want limited availability for very long.

Numbers prove this, so you can’t argue Apple can’t sell their products. They just had record Q4 revenue.

I know but in what way is the iPhone 8 not satisfactory then? It's a little worse camera, little worse screen much lower price. You don't need the power of the newer phones as screen is smaller and camera is simpler.
