Typing this on a i7 2.6 Ghz quad-core that can't believe it's still king of the Mac mini hill despite half-decade-old components, without the slightest possibility of replacement because Apple has mowed down the entire Mac desktop line like they were Chicago gangsters meeting Al Capone on Valentine's day.

I think the Mac mini can be re-imagined.. The biggest appeal is relatively low cost vs other Macs, while specs are more than adequate for basic computing tasks. However this market is currently being undercut by the likes of Chromebooks.

What if the next Mac mini assumes user has adequate broadband internet speeds, only 64GB local storage to start, with common Apple app data (photos, iTunes library, etc.) available via iCloud drive?

Apple is becoming unbearable nowadays.

If it's important, update it. Don't make fat margins selling 3 year old technology. It's not technically unethical, but it's smarmy. (And brand destroying over time)

What I worry about is a replay of the MacBook Pros. Also long overdue. Also said an important part of the Apple strategy. And the release was so illformed with shoddy low quality keyboards. People are looking to buy older machines or continue to wait.

I wish there was someone at the top of Apple who still loved computers. I know there are tons of people who work at Apple who do, but just not on the executive team. Yes, they love Apple. Yes, they love their customers, They just don't love computers and the power of the tools they sell. It really shows.

This. Exactly. Apple isnt apple anymore. They are run like a revenue at all costs company. Which is what kind of CEO tim cook is. Steve made a bad decision by putting the same type of person in there twice.

The most surprising part of Tim's email is that he kept referring to "Mac mini" without the definite article "the" before it. Looking at Apple's website, it's sort of a mixed bag. On the MBP page I see many uses of MacBook Pro without the definite article (i.e. "MacBook Pro elevates the notebook..."), but a few that use "the" before it (i.e. "The 15-inch MacBook Pro features..."). It seems that the only time they use "the" is when they're describing a specific model (15-inch). I don't know if this was always the way they referenced Mac products, but it sounds extremely awkward.

remember, you're also not allowed to pluralise MacBook!

It's pretty sad that Apple, with it's billions and billions of dollars, can't keep ALL of their product line updated. As long as they sell more phones though it's all good.

The biggest appeal

The biggest appeal is that you're only buying the parts you need, not the parts that have been involuntarily welded onto it at the factory. I have a screen. It's fine. Don't force me to buy another one to upgrade my computer, and don't force me to junk it when the computer ages out.

I'm hoping for a new mac mini eventually ... but seeing as it's been so long, it's hard to expect it. I'd definitely want to get one if a new one is released.

I’ll believe it when I see it. Clearly they don’t “love it too” since it hasn’t been updated in three years. Just slap Coffee Lake on it with a new motherboard and 32GB support, people will buy it

He's right about it being 3 years without an "update", but it's really been 5 without an "upgrade". The machines from 2012 are still way better than what replaced them.

The main problem with the Mini is that it's based on a shared design with the MBP. The MBPs have diverged from a desktop performance profile, so aren't really appropriate for a desktop use anymore. That means Apple has to design another motherboard for it, which is apparently too many motherboards for it to handle given that the new Mac Pro and the iMac Pro are the pipe, as well as whatever bumps there are for the MacBook line.

Even though they have a ridiculous amount of money, the machine can only do so much.

It’s what happens when a solid portion of your customers will buy and defend your products, no matter how crappy they are. What is the insentive to put out high value, bang fort the buck products when many of your customers will accept and proudly shill for your products when they are substandard?

Next year I'll be handing out a billion dollars in the street. There's no evidence I have a billion dollars or that I will actually hand it out if I do, but you'll just have to trust me on that.

Because the CEO said it... why wouldn’t you believe when the CEO declares it? You really think he’d lie? He’d be out of a job if he was found to be lying. Stock information fraud.
Umm.. I don't see anything happening to Mr. Musk.

This is what HP did in a similar form factor (HP Z2 Mini):

Think Apple will do any better?

Also, add back the second drive connector and user upgradable RAM - basically and updated 2012 Mac Mini.

ARM, everything soldered, and only 2 USB-C/Thunderbolt so Apple can sell a ton of adapters (and wireless keyboards and mice). It will be 2/3 the height of the current model. That’s my prediction.
