It's aliiiiiiive!

Now we just need to see it!
Yup it will be crippled to 8 gig ram, only 1 256GB flash drive, no audio port out, no SD slot, no ethernet port, one thunderbolt, no user upgradeable parts, and cost an extra $100.....and use Intel Graphics only.

Good- glad I've stuck it out with my 2014 ... can't wait to upgrade this thing. My fault for buying a base model with hdd, but still. Hoping whatever base model is sold comes with fusion or flash.

Who said I am made happy by this? I knew that a "new Mac mini is almost certainly coming". The reason I am happy is because it is official confirmation to those who were saying they have ditched the Mac mini. I have already talked about the update situation in previous posts but I won't talk about it again. No, it won't be 5 years before it's updated again.
You think this is positive confirmation of anything? ROFL

Tim Cook should just kill of the mini and simply explain that threads like rthis are why we can't have nice things.

This guy got lucky to get a response. Several of my colleagues have tried several times to no avail. Maybe the new Mac mini is coming? ...
you heard it here first. This reminds me of earlier this year when Apple replied to a iMac question and low and behold we have new iMacs. I say the mini will be unveiled no later than fall 2019. I still have a 2014 mini, 8g ram and 256 sad and that sucker is still going strong with no end in sight. Im happy to know when it does hit its fate, there will be others to take its spot.

I'm in the market for a new computer now, so while I appreciate that they the mini will still be in the mix, this is a frustrating statement not knowing when they will do something. I can't wait forever. And really, they should have done something about a year and a half ago.

It's gonna be as thin as a MacBook with only USB-c ports.

Well kidding of course, I kinda really want  to bring back the Cube!

"The Mac Mini is an important part of our plans for our lineup in the future"

(We'll be using their lifeless shells as spacers between iMac and iMac Pro boxes, to make an even number of them fit across the width of a cargo container.)

Probably less to do with luck than timing. The sheer volume of "Mini is dead" tech press commentary on the heels of the last refresh's third anniversary were hard to ignore and finally needed addressing. Tim was probably beleaguered by so many identical questions in the last 48 hours, he's got the answer saved as a TextExpander snippet.

Well, if they turn around and release a 8 (or even 16) core mac mini with support for at least 64 GB of ram, all SSD, I'll happily switch back. All of that should be doable.

Man I love modern technology.

I think it’s more that the Mac mini is in a very awkward position now and maybe even Apple isn’t clear on what role it is supposed to fill.

Neither side is wrong here. Apple hasn’t lost their way; they just aren’t interested in making the same products they did in the past. And for these Mac enthusiasts, they were lured in on the promise of an integrated ecosystem which just worked and it sucks now that Apple is no longer interested in following up on that promise.

The problem now seems to be that Apple is stuck with a small base of legacy users that require legacy technology, and I don’t think this is something which Apple can resolve without walking back on their vision of making computers more personal overall.

Maybe it might be better if the people here just cut their losses and walked away from the Mac, rather than get all bitter and cantankerous here.

I would assume at least a year, since no timeframe was offered.

Have you looked at the $699 model? 2.6 GHz, 8 GB, 1TB, iris graphics, gb Ethernet, 4 USB3, 2 TB2, HDMI, wifi ac.

If this model was refreshed tomorrow, it would probably have a slightly faster processor, USB-C (and everyone would complain about needing dongles, aka new cables), TB3 and a somewhat faster GPU. Hopefully for the same price. (Ethernet and SD slot may go.)

Yes, the current machine is 3 years old, but it’s perfectly suitable for the vast majority of its target audience—users looking for a $700 Mac. Use it for a few years, sell it for $350, and it has cost you all of $10/month.

Unfortunately, if you need a slightly better $700 mini, you’ll have to wait. If you need a quad core, 16 GB, latest cpu and ports mini, you’ll have to wait (and that’s not a $700 box either, more like 1100 or 1200).

I wish Apple would have done a refresh by now, but they haven’t—and I do sympathize with you. But that’s the reality.

I'll believe it when I see it.
Yes when I see unimproved Mini I'll be interested in upgrading my Mac Mini.
The Mini has been one of our Macs since the G4 Mini, we aren't interested in an iMac and
the follow on to our 2.5 I5 Mini is of no advantage.
Of well, I save money while waiting for the next Mini upgrade.

I’m sure your joking but I’ll take you seriously :)

Not at all doable in the current form factor. You’ve pretty much described a MacPro.

The Mac mini is energy efficient and fanless, and uses CPUs designed for mobile. Intel doesn’t make an 8 or 16 core cpu in a 15W TDP, only quad core. Those parts, just released in 3Q2017, only support 16 GB of LPDDR3 (must be soldered) or 32 GB of DDR4.

A current Intel 8 core (a desktop chip) dissipates 140W and their 16 core—a $1700 part—has a 165W TDP.

btw, don’t forget your 250W GTX 1080 ti :D:D:D

PS Keep your eye out for the new iMac Pro, you’ll love it! Or if you really don’t want a built in screen, the upcoming Mac Pro should float your boat :):)

What's the best place to sell a mac mini?

If it's the 2012 version - hang onto it , still might be faster than what Apple offers in the future

The iMac pro is not a good product - it's form over function is already crippleing it with downclocked Xeons.

The Mac Pro.... let's see. My bet it too will be form over function, apple no longer makes computers for the professional segment, it makes fashionable computer for consumers who like to call themselves "pros"

So good bye to a production floor in a company and hello mr photographer .

What are you talking about? I know they had a new mini, there is no question about that regardless of this email. I was saying this is confirmation for the many people (probably like you) who are adamant that the Mac mini is dead. Do I think it’s confirmation to you that they’re working on a new Mac mini? Yes, of course. But clearly you and a few others seem to think an email from the CEO of Apple doesn’t mean anything, that’s fine.

Still a massive upgrade over what we have now, so I wouldn't complain.

I wouldn't use the 2014 mini even if it was free. It's a joke.

I use a 2011 (!) Mac Mini as an audio workstation, media center and NAS. One with an SSD would be nice. Actually, just make a keyboard with Magic trackpad attached to it and ports coming out the back to hook up everything. Like a modern commodore 64.
