Just watching a fascinating BBC documentary on Sex and the Church. Does such a good job of disecting and explaining Christianity's attitude to sex and sexuality. Strongly recommend anyone who can to watch it.

You might want to mention the name of the documentary. ;)

That's what it's called - "Sex and the Church"

One of the fascinating points - marriage was still a civil union and not a religious one until about a thousand years after the birth of Christianity.

Nothing the BBC does is fascinating.

Some of the best shows are on the BBC right now. ST:TNG, Dr. Who, Orphan Black, and Planet Earth, just for starters...

.. and yet Fox and Breitbart can't come up with anything fascinating to say or do.

BL.

What, that's supposed to be a dig, you coming out of Left field with righties? So if we're not all in strict lockstep with liberal dogma, you're automatically on the right? That's tantamount to former President Bush saying, "you're either with us or you're against us.

Fox and what's his name aren't fascinating either.

If it doesn't show how we Christians think sex is a beautiful and holy thing that should take place between a husband and wife with an openness to have children then its worthless propaganda. If it does, I would love to watch it.

There's the disconnect. You are implying that people have sex with the only intention of procreating. That is not the case, and has been proven many times across many different species on this planet, including humans.

Future children is the primary biological goal, but the reality is, while it's sometimes part of the human relationship sexual equation, I'll reassure you in the big picture of sexual encounters, future children is not the primary motivator... that would be pleasure, intimacy, and sometimes love.

Excellent point. I believe it's been shown that animals are motivated by physical sexual tension, not the intellectual desire to create a family. And, we may be advanced, but still are animals.

What I want to know is how Christians even got this idea from? It's not from Judaism, which sees sex for the purpose of pleasure as not only acceptable, but an obligation of a husband to his wife (With repeatedly denying her such pleasure being grounds for divorce).

I am reminded of a lyric from, out of all people, Eminem:

The Real Slim Shady said:
But if we can hump dead animals and antelopes
Then there's no reason that a man and another man can't elope
But if you feel like I feel I got the antidote.
Women wave your pantyhose, sing the chorus and it goes

I'm Slim Shady, yes I'm the real Shady
All you other Slim Shadys are just imitating
So won't the real Slim Shady, please stand up

Come on. I am implying no such thing. I said "with an openness to have children". That does not in any way imply that we think sex is only for procreation.

IOW: We do not use drugs to block children or abort them if they should occur. Nor does ANY animal or species on the planet except humans.

Few points from it:

Jesus had nothing to say about homosexuality. Only really Paul who had massive hangups about sex - he preached that celibacy was even better than marriage and procreation.

Jesus actually had very little to say about sex in general - the incident with the adulterous woman being the only real teaching and that was pretty open minded.

The idea of monastic lifestyles came from traveling Syrian merchants who themselves adopted it from Buddhists and Hindus.

The concept that sex that doesn't lead to children is sinful came from the Greeks (specifically Aristotle) who believed semen contained an entire human embryo and the woman was purely an incubator.

The idea of a virgin birth was a based on the idea that sex was sinful with early texts implying Joseph was the biological father with later scriptures even stating Mary's mother was even a virgin mother because the idea of people doing it was so icky.

Marriage was not a religious institution until a thousand years after the start of Christianity - it was a civil contract.

Well if you'd rather stick to your right wing dogma and not open your eyes to anything new then you probably wouldn't find anything the BBC does interesting.

Most of this is new-age nonsense so ill ignore it. Regarding Jesus and homosexuality though: Jesus is God. God made nature. That pretty much says it all about homosexuality. You don't even need to be religious to see the truth there.

Here's a thought: what is everyone were homosexual? if they are 'born that way' then its most definitely possible at some point right? So what if it happened? Would we search for a Cure or just call it a day as a species?

Keep in mind: I don't believe there is a cure for homosexuality as I think its an indulgence.

I used to know this one gay guy who would get younger dudes to come to his house and play straight porn to get them horny so he could try to take advantage of them. When I heard about it I thought "gee, if everyone is born a certain way how could he hope to convert any of them". Then I came to my senses and thought "oh, he's just a perv being a perv"

I exactly what someone like you would say - like a child with their fingers in their ears saying "la la la I'm not listening". That doesn't say ANYTHING about homosexuality. I give you some historical facts and you give me " just because" and a diagnosis of homosexuality based on your opinion rather than anything scientific or intelligent.

Even your sketchy one-off anecdotal evidence for gay being an indulgence Is lacking any logic.

A penis doesn't belong in an anus. Simple and scientific enough for you?
Common sense has just gone out the window in this day and age.

No, it is not at all scientific. Much like the rest of your incoherent ranting. And why does it always come back to your obsession with sex?

Sex makes up a fraction of 1% of my happily engaged big gay life. The rest is taken up with mundane stuff like work, renovating a massive house, exercising, going on holiday, going out with my partner and my group of socially progressive straight friends (I have never tried to seduce and have never felt any threat from me), lying on the sofa watching TV, paying bills, walking the dogs..... Yet you think all gays do is live in this constant seething orgy of b#ggery.

I don't mean to offend I simply told one story. I could tell many more of many different types of gay people some good some bad. I believe however that man and woman were created by God with the intention of children. It doesn't always work out that way but that is the ultimate intention of intimacy none the less, not to simply have orgasims. Since sex is no biggie and only takes place 1% of the time, would you mind giving it up? I know I would mind if you asked me the same with regards my wife. So maybe it's a bigger deal than you say?

Why is it people like you always seem to go to gay male sex? Women can be gay too. They even get a special term.

Genesis suggests that women only gained the ability to give birth after sin had been committed.

And heres a question for you: Throughout the old and new Testament, there are numerous passages which say that women should be subordinate to men. Their husbands especially. How do you personally reconcile this with modern views of gender equality?

Finally I'd just like to point out again that Judaism does NOT have quite the same views on the subject of sex.
