You don't see politics? Perhaps you haven't paid attention to too many graduation speeches.

You can be sure Cook's speech will be littered with typical NPC nonsense.

Thank God for wealth inequality.

I don't want to have the same assets and bank account at the guy panhandling or my neighbor.

I don't understand the obsession to just absolutely soak and envy those more fortunate.

It used to be people admired those who had more and wanted to know how they too could come to that position.

Now it's just---"they have more money than you and they do not deserve it! Get them! Pitchforks!"

Newsflash: Income inequality is normal and unescapable. If it weren't, we'd be living to the lowest common denominator.

Like the Soviet Union was. Unless you like that sort of thing.

PITCHFORKS!

Thank you. You nailed it!
I am always curious to ask these people how they are planning to "donate" their smartphone or computer to the poor asian kid who cant afford one.
Thank god their parents might be working in these "lowly paid" jobs which actually brings more money than many other jobs available in that country for the same skill sets and could one day help that kid to get a better life.
These same people will also cry foul when 1) iphone price increases 2) AAPL share prices tank.
The horror!

Dear Graduates
"Bla bla bla bla bla."
Here is your free iPhone XR.
Thank you.
Tim cook
:p

This is pretty bang on. It always feels off cause you’re thinking - you’re a leader of a capitalist enterprise complicit in a system that furthers wealth inequality, exploits workforces in developing countries for wage rates that lack human dignity and we just know you’re going to stand up there and harp on about some educated, privileged, western view of the world being hash tag “better than you found it”.

Jeez.

You are thinking wrong! geez!
I just say that if you are a CEO your job is to make money for the investors and not to "educate" people. I'm not against capitalism and I'm not a communist. Is just simple logic that if you cannot undestand I can only feel sorry for you.

It seems you are not aware that Tim Cook is neither a software engineer, coder, or software manager.

Um, according to his vita on Apple’s oage he actually has a degree in industrial engineering.

Of course he was the COO before, so it’s not like he wouldn’t know what to do about quality issues and processes.

And as the CEO he is the top manager.

And, that giving a commencement speech in no way influences Apple dealing with software bug/privacy issues.

Also...you are probably not aware that CEOs of large tech companies routinely give commencement addresses at universities. You might want to research that a bit.

Well said. Onr probably could return that argument.

Anyway, using “research” like that might expain Apple’s problems.

You’re way oversimplifying this. I agree wealth inequality is normal and inescapable - it’s the sheer limits to which it’s being stretched that begin to tear at the morality of a system within a civilisation.

We’re all guilty of this to a degree (ie walking past homeless people or whatever, life goes on). But to bring it back to Cook and his value espousing - in my mind (others will disagree) a hypocrisy starts to emerge when you have that much influence and power, and you stay complicit in the very system.

I’m not saying don’t make money - I’m saying Cook has his wires somewhat crossed.
I think Cook has plenty of misplaced values more, I don’t know, sort of “morally offensive,” than income inequality.

For instance, he famously didn’t care about the “bloody (return on investment)” of an Apple environmental initiative like five years ago. I forget what it was. Basically, “I don’t care if we’re losing money because it’s the right thing to do.”

Okay—fast forward to today. Cook and Apple bend over backwards to comply with Chinese censorship policies. He has to understand what China does re: censorship is morally offensive. He certainly cares more about that “bloody roi” than principle.

Or Apple’s own censorship. I will concede for the purposes of argument Alex Jones is a distasteful lunatic. Is Jones’ rambling really more offensive than, I don’t know, 40% of the rap lyrics Apple offers for streaming or purchase on its App Store? But safer to posture and ban Jones, as he’s an easy target.

Food for thought.

For sure. The intersectionality of "values" for someone like Cook is infinitely complex. I think it's fair for an institution to define their own values and preach them - Apple being privacy / environment etc. Where it falls down for me however is, as you say, where they become empty words that are bought and sold (third world wages argument).

Um (seriously)?

Cook does have a degree in industrial engineering, and an MBA. But you're missing the point that him delivering a university commencement address in no way interferes with Apple's attention to solving the problem at hand, dealt with by managers with more appropriate education (computer science, electrical engineering, quality control, etc degrees), training, and expertise who focus on such issues.

Surprise surprise. Little Timmy wh0ring out Apple once again to pimp his agenda. He needs to just shut the **** up, quit pimping Apple out at every opportunity and just leave so Apple can get someone in who actually CARES about the company and the great products they USED to make.

In his speech he just gonna tell this broke graduating college students to be prepared to buy a new upcoming $1500 iPhone. They can skip some of their student loan payments so they can have this nice shiny gadget to help their confidence of finding a job. Good luck!:D

You mean he‘s just the mascot?

If I was graduating at Tulane, I’d request picking up my diploma before or after the ceremony.

From what I’ve seen, Cook “cares” about education like he does Apple quality control.

During his speech, Cook should propose bringing AI into Sports.

For example, to help Refs in the NFL with Pass Interference calls (& NO Calls, that should be called), as well as Traveling in the NBA ... two easy ones to start with !

What's the speech going to be?
"Watch what you say. If I don't like it, I'll 'curate' you off the net. Have some emojis."

To me the whole CEO politician thing doesn’t vibe. I liked it when CEO meant passionate decision maker. Sure, Steve did one commencement speech but that was at the end, after all his accomplishment. Tim hopped right into this cr*p and hasn’t slowed down.
Shouldn't he be preaching, ahem i mean teaching youngsters at school to get them hooked at an earlier age :D

You said it yourself, “from what I’ve seen”. Maybe not the entire picture?

most of the graduates from all of these colleges end up with tremendous loans and working jobs outside of their majors. how about getting REAL people who have gone through this hell to give commencement? someone the avg. student can relate to. i can just pull up hundreds of press conferences by guys like tim on youtube or some random website. his life would never be applicable to an avg./majority of the college students. what is even the point? to prop up his own ego of how great he is? how does this help the avg. kid out there?

cook didn’t volunteer. He was invited. And the perspective of an Apple ceo might be useful at a Tulane graduation commencement. (Maybe not to readers of MR, but to Tulane graduates.)
